This patriotic pinecone flower floral arrangement is perfect for Memorial Day, the 4th of July, Labor Day, and even Veterans Day. Just think of all the ways you can use them.

A week ago, with Madison’s help, we decided to turn some mason jars into Patriotic Vases, which Madison shared on her blog. Over the holidays, I picked up some pinecones to make pinecone crafts. You might remember my pinecone flower wreath that we did a few years ago, and Madison has also done pinecone turkeys and pinecone hedgehogs. You’ll be surprised at what you can turn pinecones into. This patriotic pinecone floral arrangement is no exception.

Pinecones, when they’re cut and painted, look very much like zinnias, which I absolutely love. With Memorial Day literally right around the corner, in one week, I’ve been trying to think of ways to decorate my outside space as we’ll be celebrating with a BBQ with the family. Since I didn’t want to go into the stores to purchase decor, I figured, why not make my own? With this floral arrangement, there will be no dead flowers, and I don’t have to water them to keep them alive for a few days. I’ll be able to reuse them for the upcoming relevant holidays. This is a win-win project, if I do say so myself.

If you’ve never worked with pinecones before and this is your first time crafting with pinecones, you can totally do this. The hardest part is waiting for the paint to dry, but once that’s done, it’s smooth sailing from there. So let’s get to it!

Directions:

Step 1:  With your floral wire cutter or shears, begin by cutting the pointed end of your pinecone. You can go down a few layers. In my case, I went down about 3 layers for some and 4 for others so they can be all different sizes. If your pinecone is flat at the bottom, then you’re good to go. However, if your pinecone isn’t flat like mine was, you’ll want to cut out the centerpiece so that the bottom of the inside is entirely flat.

Step 2: Once you’ve got your pinecone (flower) the way you want it, it’s now time to paint your flower. For the primary colors, I decided to use spray paint to give me easier and faster coverage. However, you can also paint your pinecones with a paintbrush. You’ll still need a paintbrush to paint the stamen yellow as you’re not able to do that with a spray can. Follow the directions of your can and let dry.

Step 3: Once your flower has completely dried, it’s now time to paint the ‘stamens.’ Pour some yellow paint into your paint palette and paint the stamens yellow. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but for better coverage, it’s best to use a small paintbrush. Let dry.

Step 4: Once the paint on your pinecone has once again dried, turn your pinecone over, and with your glue gun, add a generous amount of glue to the flat surface on the bottom.

Step 5: Place a skewer into the glue and hold for about 2–3 minutes until the glue completely dries.

Step 6: This is the fun part because your pinecone flower is finally complete. Place your pinecone flowers in your favorite vase and use them as decor. Place it on the patio table when entertaining, on your entryway table, or wherever you feel the need for a bit of color.
