You don’t require any special equipment for this. All you need is your regular vacuum cleaner along with a hose attachment and steam cleaning machine. So, how to clean your mattress at home? Read on.

How to Steam Clean a Mattress

Step 1: REMOVE THE SHEETS AND PILLOWS

This one is probably kind of obvious; nevertheless, here it is. The first step is to strip your mattress of sheets, pillows, undercovers, blankets, etc., even if it is an adjustable bed. You need it completely bare. Also, while you are at it, it is best to steam clean your mattress as well because the sweat and dust get accumulated on that too.

Step 2: PUT IT TO WASH

Before you begin cleaning the mattress, put your sheets, covers, and mattress toppers to wash. If there is a stain or they smell bad, you can add a cup of white vinegar while cleaning to ensure they come out smelling fresh.

Step 3: MAKE YOUR MATTRESS SMELL GOOD

To make sure you rid of any unpleasant smell from the mattress and deodorize it, you will need baking soda and essential oils. Now, if you have a twin-size bed, you will require about one cup of baking soda and 15 drops of essential oils, such as peppermint or lavender. Mix the two and sprinkle it all over your mattress. Let it sit for a couple of hours. This time will allow the mattress to absorb the oils and the pleasant smell it emits. If you think your bed is stinking, then you can keep the mixture for longer.

Step 4: VACUUM IT

Run the vacuum over your mattress slowly and gently so that the baking soda is completely removed from your bed. In places that come in contact with your skin, hold your cleaner there for a few seconds longer to ensure any dust mites and dead skin cells present will also get pulled in by the vacuum cleaner. Remember, you cannot directly jump to steam cleaning your mattress because before that, you will want to remove all the dirt, loose fibers, and allergens present so that the steams truly penetrates through the bed, giving it a thorough clean.

Step 5: CHOOSE YOUR STEAMING EQUIPMENT

You will need a machine that heats the water to a minimum of 212 degrees Fahrenheit or 100-degree Celsius. Now, if your steam iron can do that, you can use it for this purpose. Then, fill your steamer as per the instructions and let it heat. Finally, apply the steam on the mattress using mild strokes, going slowly to ensure you are giving it a deep cleaning. Also, don’t forget the sides. This method can be used for Cleaning Your Latex Mattress or any other kind you have.

Step 6: WAIT FOR IT TO DRY

Now that you have steam cleaned your bed let it dry. You can switch on the fan or put it under sunlight to speed up the process.

Step 7: PUT THE SHEETS BACK ON

Once your mattress is fully dry, only then put the sheets and blankets back on. Generally, it is suggested that you start steam cleaning early in the morning so that, by noon, you are done with it.
