Button Heart Frame

This simple Button Heart Frame will bring joy to your heart this Valentine’s Day!

I’m going to be honest, I’m not big on Valentine’s Day. I don’t celebrate the day and haven’t in quite some time. That doesn’t mean that I don’t like receiving flowers and chocolate like the next girl, but I’d much rather receive cash. When it comes to gifts from my kids, however, I much prefer to get gifts that they have made. I still have a flower box that my son made for me almost 6 years ago and a card with handprints that Madison made when she was 2. A gift made with love means a lot more than a gift purchased at a store, unless it’s Tiffany’s, of course. No girl can resist a Tiffany blue box.

Madison just loves crafting, and every free time she gets, she brings my craft supplies so we can get busy. Having just created my Button Spring Flowers Shadow Box, I still had a lot of buttons that I could turn into something crafty. With Valentine’s Day only a few weeks away and needing something to make my home look a little more “valentiney,” I decided to do a button heart frame that I could either place on my entryway table or hang on the wall. If you’re not crafty, like I am, this is perfect for you. It takes approximately 20 minutes, and when you’re done, you’ll wonder what took you so long to use those extra buttons you had lying around.

Button Heart Frame

Supplies Needed:

Picture Frame

Buttons

Glue/Glue Gun

Glitter (optional)

(All supplies can be found at your local dollar store)

Instructions:

Step 1

Get a frame that you have no problem taking apart, preferably one from the dollar store. Discard the glass in the front or keep it to use for step 5. Take the back piece off from your frame and draw a heart on the inside. We picked up a package of already cut hearts at our dollar store and used that to trace a heart.

Step 2

Start by gluing your buttons along the heart that you just traced, making your outline. This will be your guide to adding the additional buttons on the inside.

Step 3

Continue filling out your heart with your extra buttons filling up all spaces. Using different sizes makes it a lot easier. While I used pink and red buttons, you can use whatever color you want. Pastel or even primary colors are fine. Don’t worry about the glue that you will see on your buttons. You can clean that up later with a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol.

Step 4

While you can stop at step 3, I decided I wanted it to look a little more 3 dimensional and added buttons on top of buttons, thus covering up all signs of the back of the frame under the buttons and giving it a 3D look. You can even go the extra mile and add a bow at the top of your heart if you’re adventurous.

Step 5

If you decided to keep the glass in the frame, you could sprinkle a bit of glitter in the front of the frame before putting the back cover back in place. If you decided on getting rid of the glass, then simply place the back of the frame back in place, and you’re done. Easy peasy!

As mentioned, this took approximately 20 minutes, but if you use bigger buttons, it will take even less. It’s a cute dimensional button heart frame that you can use over and over again. You can get the kids to help out, but be careful when using the glue gun. Regular glue can also be used but will take a bit longer to dry.

Here’s to a great Valentine’s Day!
