The start of a new school year is a pretty big deal for kids. After a long, fun-filled summer, the idea of heading back to school can be incredibly exciting – or a colossal bummer. If you’re on a mission to make the first day of school memorable in your household, here are some fun ways to do it!

However your child feels about the start of school, making the first day back, fun, and memorable can go a long way to them adjusting to life back in the classroom.

Madison is now at the age where she has her own unique sense of style, and unicorns are all the rage for her currently. She can’t bypass a unicorn anything without wanting to get it. It helps that OshKosh B’gosh has quite a range of unicorn gear, so when we went back to school shopping, I gave her free reign to choose whatever back to school clothing she desired. I wanted her to embrace her unique sense of style without my influence, show her individuality, and just be herself.

What I like about OshKosh B’gosh is that everything coordinates. She can choose a pair of jeans and a few tops and they would all go well together. They are also age-appropriate so I never fear that what she chooses would be too risque for school. They’re all about letting kids be kids and be themselves. While I’m sharing ways that you can make your kids’ first day back to school memorable, I’m also sharing Madison’s OshKosh B’gosh picks, and they’re absolute winners!

Start the Day Off Right With an Extra Special Breakfast.

Surprise your little learner with homemade waffles, blueberry pancakes, or a trip to the local bakery for a fresh donut before their first day of class.

… or Surprise Them With a Sweet Treat to Wrap Up the Day.

Instead of heading straight home after picking the kids up from school, swing by your favorite local ice cream parlor for a scoop or a sundae. Enjoy dessert before dinner and ask them about their day!

Decorate the House to Celebrate the Start of School.

Balloons and streamers make everything fun – even the fact that summer’s over! Fill your child’s room with balloons while they sleep, or create a curtain of streamers for them to walk through as they emerge from the bedroom and start the day.

Stage a Back-to-School Photoshoot!

Many parents try to snap a quick photo to commemorate the start of the new school year, but to make it extra-memorable, kick things up a notch with a full back-to-school photoshoot! Find an excellent backdrop, make (or buy) a few fun props, and let your little one strike a few poses for the camera.

Set Some Goals.

Before your child heads out for their first day of school, sit down with them and come up with some goals for the year ahead. They can be serious academic goals (“I want to make the honor roll this year!”), fun goals (“I want to sign up for one sports team!”), or goals that fall somewhere in the middle. Write them down, put ‘em somewhere visible, and revisit them often to stay on track.

Arrive In Style!

Does your little one usually take the bus to school? Consider dropping them off in the carpool lane or, if you live close enough, biking to school for the very first day.

Document The Morning!

Capture the chaos of the first day of school with a fun video. Use your phone to record your child as they go through their morning routine, and ask a few questions to get their thoughts about the year ahead of them. If a video isn’t your thing, snap some photos or just write down your child’s answers to a few interview questions. You’ll cherish these memories later on!

Give Your Child a Back-To-School Book.

Does your child like to read? Surprise them on the first day back to school with a brand new book. Wrap it up and leave it on their nightstand to find when they wake up or hide it in their backpack to discover in class. To make it even more special, take a moment to write a heartfelt note inside.

Stick a Surprise in Their Lunchbox.

If you send your little one off each morning with a homemade lunch, add a little surprise for the first day back. That might be dessert, a special drink, a small toy, or a note promising a trip to the movies over the weekend. As long as it’s something that doesn’t usually make an appearance in their lunchbox, it’ll stand out!

Let Your Child Decide Dinner.

Mom and Dad usually get to make the dinner plans, so getting to choose what you’ll eat for the evening can be a pretty big treat for some kids. Grab a meal at your child’s favorite restaurant, pick up the best takeout around, or order pizza from the best local shop and see what stories your child can share from their first day back at school.
