There’s no hiding the fact that flu season is in full swing. Every time you shop for groceries or hug your child after they come home from school, you run the risk of spreading – or catching – germs that cause the flu. And you probably don’t have time to deal with the flu right now. I know I don’t!

Luckily, there are plenty of steps you can take to keep yourself and your family from catching the flu this winter. I know I take some precautions to keep my family healthy and our immune systems strong during the season. I like to call them my secret weapons for fighting the flu. Spoiler alert: these aren’t revolutionary secrets. But I’m convinced that these are the tips and tricks that keep my family – and will hopefully keep yours – flu-free:
GET A FLU SHOT.
There’s no getting around it. Flu shots have been proven to significantly reduce your odds of getting the flu and spreading the virus to others, so it’s important to sign up at the start of flu season and protect yourself, your family, and your community from illness. Odds are, your insurance provider will fully reimburse you for the cost of your vaccine.
Just like getting plenty of rest, eating enough food – and the right types of food – is crucial to your body’s ability to fight the flu. Make sure your family’s diet is filled with healthy, nutritious meals made with natural foods, including plenty of fruits and vegetables, to keep your immune systems strong. Steer clear of fast food and other stuff loaded with calories but lacking in actual nutrients.
MAKE SLEEP A PRIORITY.
If you don’t get enough sleep, your immune system won’t function at maximum capacity, leaving you vulnerable to the effects of the flu virus. During flu season, make sure you get plenty of good, restful sleep each evening. This is especially important if you feel you’re beginning to catch something. Often, a good night’s rest can work wonders to ward off a creeping illness.
