This review has been long in the making. As a few of you may know my mommy is an Amazon Vine Reviewer. That means that I get to test out new products before they are on the market. One of those things that I was fortunately enough to try out has been the Amazon Kindle Fire HD Kids Edition. I have to admit that I have had this for a few months and between our trip to the Caribbean, and all the crazy stuff that has happened since we have been back, this review has been placed on the backburner. Well the good news however is that we have a giveaway for you today so I guess good things happen to those who wait. Or so they say! So what is my initial reaction to the new Fire Kindle HD Kids Edition which is recommended for ages 3 and up? Let’s find out!
The Kindle Fire HD Kids Edition Tablet is currently available in a 6″ or 7″ screen display and you have the option of choosing the 8GB or 16GB. Each comes with 1 year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited and a 2-Year Worry-Free Guarantee. You know with kids you’re going to need that guarantee. You also have the option of choosing the color kid-proof protective case that you want which is included free. As of this moment you have the choice of blue, green or pink. I was lucky enough to receive the 7″ 16GB Kids edition in pink. Upon taking it out of the original packaging your kindle is once again enclosed in another packaging complete which also includes your A/C adapter. Inserting it in the case is super easy and so is setting up. All you need is your Amazon account information.
One of the things that mommy loved about the Kindle Fire Kids was the parental control. There was time limits that can be set along with Educational Goals. You can set up your Kindle Fire Kids Edition to block all entertainment until your kids have met their educational goals. Don’t worry if your kids can’t read, the books can read to you and you just follow along. Having your child read at least for 30 minutes before they can play games etc is a really great option. My Kindle is set up for ages 8 and below but if you have other children you can set up separate profiles for each.
Apps, Books and even Videos are all age appropriate and recommended for your little ones. They are some of the more popular characters that your kids know and have come to love. They are displayed in a carousel style and a quick swipe left or right displays what your little one wants. A simple touch and it comes right up.
So let me tell you a little bit more about Free Time which is included with each Kindle Fire HD Kids Edition. You get 1 year with each purchase and is an all-in-one subscription for kids that offers
unlimited access to thousands of kid-friendly books, movies, TV shows, educational apps, and games. All from the top brands that your kids love like Disney, PBS, Nickelodeon and much more. There are no ads and no-in app purchases so you parents don’t have to worry that your kids are going to accidentally purchase something.
The touch screen is very intuitive and I’ve not had a problem so far. Downloads are pretty quick but it really all depends on your home network since the Kindle Fire HD Kids Edition is wi-fi compatible only. Did I mention that the Kids Edition also comes with a front and rear facing camera? Yes it does. The rear camera is only 2mp so don’t expect DSLR picture quality.
So what do I really think about the Kindle Fire HD Kids Edition? I love the fact that there is no in-app purchases. There are thousands of books for me to read, videos to watch and all totally free. I’m a little disappointed with the camera but I can live without it. Mommy loves the parental controls and the kid proof case. The 2 year warranty is also great because we all know how tough up little kids can be on our electronics. It does however have a hefty price tag but with the Free-Time Unlimited it is totally worth it. The Kindle Fire HD Kids Edition totally gets my TWO TINY THUMBS UP!
Now here’s your chance to own a Kindle Fire if you’ve always wanted to own one. Today one of you will win the Kindle Fire HD 6 (16gb without sponsors). Winner will be randomly selected and will have 48 hours to reply to the winning email. Failure to do so will mean forfeiting your prize and a new winner will be chosen. Good luck!
So what would you use your kindle for if you got one?
