If you’re thinking about changing your career but don’t know where to begin then don’t worry, you have definitely come to the right place. Whether you’re just finishing your degree or you’ve been working in the same industry for years, moving into a new industry can be difficult and can take a lot of time.
Whilst it may be overwhelming at first, there are lots of questions you can ask yourself to help make the process a little bit easier. From deciding on the industry you would like to work in, to starting your training, the more you think about it the better. With that in mind, here are 5 things to consider before changing your career:
WHAT INDUSTRY WOULD YOU LIKE TO WORK IN?
One of the first things you need to consider is the industry you want to move into. Although you probably already have a good idea of what you would like to do, it’s important for you to take the time to research all of the options that are available to you. In some cases, you may find that there is no demand for the role you want to do in the area you live in. There are however a few tips and tricks when it comes to finding a great industry to work in, that can help you along your journey.
DO YOU NEED TRAINING?
Another important thing to consider is whether or not you’re going to need any specific training or order to do the new job you’re looking to start. Although you may not be able to start your training right away, having an idea of the skills you need to have will help you get a headstart. If there are courses you can do of your accord, you should definitely start looking into doing them as soon as you possibly can. Whether that means signing up to attend a traditional college or taking online classes. It’s always a good idea to have guidance when it comes to doing courses at home, as you can begin to lose focus due to the distractions of home.
WHAT BENEFITS WILL IT BRING?
Whether you’re looking at cybersecurity careers or you want to go into marketing or finance, you need to think about all of the benefits the career path you’re choosing can bring to you. Cybersecurity, for example, will give you the opportunity to learn technical skills and in most cases, will come with a large pay-packet.
HOW WILL YOU GO ABOUT CHANGING YOUR CAREER?
Another important thing to consider is how you’re going to change your career. Although you can leave your job right away, it’s best to leave a little bit of an overlap whilst you’re training.
DO YOU HAVE A CONTINGENCY PLAN IN PLACE?
Finally, you need to be sure you have a contingency plan in place. Whilst things are likely to go as plan, you may not enjoy it as much as you had originally thought. Do you have a backup plan if it all falls through? These are all things you need to think about.
Although there are lots of ways to change your career, you need to ensure you’re making the right decision. Consider your choices and decide what’s the best route for you to take to make a career change worthwhile for you.
