As many of you may know, I’m a retired service member. I served my country proudly and would do it again in a heartbeat if I could. For me, the one constant that has always been there, combined with my family, has been the USO. I remember heading to my very first duty station, not knowing anyone on base, but having the USO there for me. I was able to have a meal, sit back and relax and chat with the volunteers who helped to run the place.
Now, even though I’m retired, the USO is still there for my family and me. My eyes light up whenever I see a USO sign in an airport. I know that I can go there and once again a meal would be waiting, along with a place to relax until my next flight. It’s our home away from home, and other service members and their families would agree with me wholeheartedly.
First, let’s talk about the USO and its Mission.
Every year thousands of service members will be away from their families during the holiday season, whether they’re deployed or on active duty. This usually means missing out on precious moments, family traditions, and sometimes many firsts. The USO’s mission is to help strengthen service members by keeping them connected to family, home, and country, while they serve this great nation. Not only do they provide welfare, but they also offer services and fun activities for service members and their families, such as live entertainment, to help boost morale.
Many may not know this, but the USO is a non-profit organization that is sustained by charitable contributions made by generous donors such as yourself, and their workers are volunteers who give freely of their time.

Almost everyone you know has a Facebook page, and we use it to keep in touch with each other, share our daily lives, and causes that we love. You can host a fundraiser, sharing why you choose to give back to our military during this time of year, and rally other military supporters (friends and family) to help support our men and women in uniform, and their families, during a time they need us most.
