Creative and Fun Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day With the Whole Family

Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day

Looking for creative ways to celebrate and honor Memorial Day with your family at home? I got you covered! Every year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate the brave soldiers who lost their lives serving in the United States Military. Families from different states get together to celebrate this holiday in a number of different ways. Some visit the cemeteries or memorials of fallen soldiers while others spend time as a family. But if you’re staying home due to the pandemic and are running out of ideas, then check out these simple but fun and creative ways to celebrate Memorial Day with your loved ones.

1. Have a BBQ Family Gathering

It’s traditional for American families to hold a barbecue and invite the whole family. Now, this year might make things a little more difficult to get everyone together. But as long as you have your immediate family with you, that’s all that matters. Just make sure there’s plenty of corn, burgers and hot dogs on the grill for everyone, and why not? Even a Memorial Day cake that’s so easy, anyone can make it.

2. Make Your Own Remembrance Poppy

For those of you who don’t know, a remembrance poppy is an artificial flower that people wear to honor the soldiers who lost their lives fighting for their country. Now, you can do one of two things. You can either buy a poppy pin or you can make one using an egg carton, a pair of scissors, some paint and a brooch pin. Check out this YouTube craft that’s fun and simple for the little ones.

3. Take a Virtual Tour of the White House And More

Gather the whole family in the living room and visit the Google Arts & Culture site to take a virtual tour of the White House. Along the way, you and the kids will have access to fun facts and details about major events that took place in the various rooms. You can also take a virtual tour of Arlington National Cemetery on YouTube to pay tribute to the honored soldiers who lost their lives for your freedom.

4. Decorate the House with Flags

While the barbecue’s cooking in the grill, grab the kids and get them to help hang a couple of US flags around the house. Traditionally, people hang them in front of their windows where others can see them. But you can also create your own DIY flag projects, or even a fun patriotic day mason jar craft and more!

5. Have an Outdoor Movie Experience

Set up the movie screen outdoor or find a nice wall to project a movie on. Then pop some popcorn or put some potato chips in a bowl. Don’t forget the ranch dip! If you don’t own a projector, you can just set up the TV outside or bring a laptop with you and set it up on a chair. Make sure to lay a couple of pillows and throw blankets so everyone’s comfortable.

As far as movie ideas, there are lots of patriotic movies the whole family can watch together. Here are a couple of my favorite ones:

  • National Treasure
  • Max
  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Molly, An American Girl on the Home Front
  • This is America, Charlie Brown
  • The Saturday Boy
  • Year of the Jungle
  • The Sandlot
  • Forrest Gump

No matter how you choose to celebrate Memorial Day, make sure you take a moment to remember and honor the fallen soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We are grateful for your service and we will never forget. Have a safe and happy Memorial Day!
