Crane Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier Review

With the colder weather upon us, I’ve been experiencing coughs and colds. I’ve actually had 2 of them since Mommy last spoke about caring for your sick toddler, and I currently have a runny nose. One of the items that mommy and I recommended was a humidifier. Crane, the #1 maker of humidifiers for your little ones, decided to send mommy and I one of their humidifiers to review. With so many to choose from, Mommy and I decided to get Oscar the Owl from their Adorable Animals collection. With my current obsession with owls, it was a no-brainer. This post is going to be picture-laden and also include a video from Crane. We couldn’t help ourselves.

The one thing Mommy really loved about our new Crane Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier, besides it looking so awesome, is that it requires no filter. Now there are no extra parts to buy. Who doesn’t like a product that you only pay for once? It is also very easy to use as well. It comes already set up in the box, so all you need to do is fill it with water.

The tank can hold approximately 1 gallon of water. Use cool water and not hot. We have hard water where we live, so mommy uses distilled water. That 1 gallon of water lasts a very long time. According to Crane, it can run for a minimum of 11 hours on that 1 gallon. So far, mommy and I have run it for 8–9 hours at night, and we have to say that they are correct. There was still water and mist continuing when I woke up.

It is also very quiet. No one likes a noisy humidifier when they’re sleeping. That defeats the purpose of sleeping. Sure, you like a little white noise, but not noise that is so loud that you can’t sleep. I can sleep through this, and I think I’m a very light sleeper. It is important to set the humidifier on a medium mist with the door ajar. A high setting may be too much humidity.

Another great feature of the humidifier is the auto-shutoff feature. When the water level drops below the recommended level, the power indicator light will turn red and the mist output will stop. So far we haven’t experienced that since Mommy has yet to run it for 24 hrs.

It is very easy to clean when you’re finished using it as well. Remember to empty your water basin and water tank daily. The humidifier should be disinfected weekly as well, with 1 part white vinegar and two parts water. You let the solution sit for 30 minutes, then rinse.

Here is some great information that Crane supplied me with for my blog readers:

Young children commonly get about 6 to 8 colds or upper respiratory tract infections each year. The FDA and pediatricians recommend not giving over-the-counter cough and cold medicine to children under the age of six because of the risk of overdose.

For cold and flu symptoms, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a cool mist humidifier, saline nasal solution, and a bulb to suction the nasal mucus. A cool mist humidifier is preferred over a warm mist because the water does not boil.

Humidifiers can help:

  • Loosen nasal congestion
  • Ease dry coughs
  • Soothe itchy dry skin
  • Moisten chapped lips
  • Prevent nose bleeds
  • Helps with overall cold and flu symptoms
  • Cool mist is best for croup

What is the difference between the cool mist and warm mist?

Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifiers cool mist is generated by a thin film of water that is passed over a rapidly vibrating transducer. The vibration breaks the water up into tiny droplets and emits a whisper-quiet mist.

Warm mist humidifiers produce a warm mist by boiling the water in the humidifier. Generally warm mist humidifiers allow vapor liquids to be added to the water.

Can I add scents, medication or oils to the cool mist ultrasonic humidifier water?

No, medication should never be added directly into the water for any of the ultrasonic cool mist humidifiers.  The oil in the liquids will disrupt the smooth operation of the humidifier and possibly cause malfunction.  Warm mist humidifiers allow vapor liquids but not scents/oils.

Here is the video that mommy and I promised you from Crane showing you exactly how easy it is to use and clean your Cool Mist Humidifier.
