Bringing the Taste of Italy Home

Lately, I’ve really missed traveling. It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to take a trip, and unfortunately, I’m not in a position to change that right now.

So what do I do?

I try to recreate some of my favorite vacation experiences at home. I can’t go to Disney World, but I can whip up some Mickey Mouse pancakes for Sunday brunch and put on a Disney playlist. I can’t wander the streets of a foreign city, soaking in new sights, sounds, and smells – but I can pour a glass of wine, watch a travel documentary, and research new destinations to add to my vacation bucket list.

And even though I can’t visit new restaurants and indulge in your favorite dishes in the countries they came from – one of the best parts of traveling for me – I can recreate some of my favorite snacks, meals, and dining experiences at home. Which brings me to Italy…

Italy is one of the destinations my family and I enjoyed visiting, and it’s one I was hoping to revisit this year. Since that isn’t possible, we’ve been learning new skills in the kitchen as we tackle new recipes inspired by our favorites:

  • Pizza. The pizza in Italy is like no other! While I can’t quite say our homemade pizza tastes like what you’ll get in Italy, it’s pretty delicious, and it’s fun to let everyone customize their own quarter of the pie. One thing I learned while visiting Italy is that pineapple on pizza is a big NO.
  • Pasta. Homemade pasta sounds intimidating but it really isn’t as hard as it seems to make! With flour, water, eggs, and a tool to help you roll and cut your pasta into your preferred shape, you can have homemade noodles in no time.
  • Homemade tomato sauce. A good red sauce is essential for many Italian dishes. Instead of buying jarred or canned sauce from the store, you can make your own. The best part? It doesn’t take a lot of time, money, or effort to make a sauce that’s sure to impress your family.

Another favorite Italian treat I love to recreate? Cheese and charcuterie boards. That’s why I was so excited to discover Carando Snack Trays! These little snack trays come with everything you need to recreate your favorite spread – a perfectly paired collection of meat, cheese, and crackers, with a few dark chocolate covered strawberries for a little something sweet.

I was seriously impressed when I tried one for the first time. They didn’t sacrifice quality for convenience when it comes to the ingredients – they use authentic Italian ingredients, and it shows!

I usually steer clear of prepackaged foods, but Carando Snack Trays have quickly earned a place in my fridge – and my purse. They’re an all-occasion snack, perfect for Netflix movie marathons, date nights, socially distanced happy hours, as well as a great on-the-go option, and even while relaxing in my backyard on a cool fall day with a glass of wine.
