Beautiful St. Vincent and The Grenadines

So you’ve heard of Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and even Haiti but have you ever heard of St. Vincent and the Grenadines? I’m sure most of you have not.

See that T-Shirt that I’m wearing? It was given to me by my grandma on that beautiful island when I was 9 months old. It was too big for me but I was eventually able to fit into it. My grandma currently lives on the island and I want to tell you a little bit about my roots.

I call myself Caribbean-American because my roots are based in the caribbean on that beautiful island. St. Vincent is a very small island in the Eastern Caribbean and is a chain of islands, much like Hawaii. St. Vincent is the largest of the islands but there is also Bequia (beck-way), Mustique, Canouan (can-o-wan), Young Island, Mayreau, Union Island, Palm Island, Petit St.Vincent and a number of other small islets.

Their nearest neighbors are Barbados (think Rihanna), St. Lucia and Grenada. The country has a total population of about 111,000, not even as big as some major cities. The official language is english and the currency used is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$). Currently the conversion is EC$1 = US$0.37.

The country was once entirely British ruled but they gained their independence on October 27, 1979.

St. Vincent is a very mountainous island with an active volcano. Mommy said she remembered the very last volcanic eruption as she was a very little girl, just a little bigger than I am now. The average temperature is around 81 degrees but the coolest months are between November and February.

Since St.Vincent doesn’t have an international airport as yet (they are currently in the process of building one), you need to get there from one of the other islands. Mommy’s and my preference is Barbados although we’ve gone through Trinidad and Tobago to get there as well. If you’re scared of little planes though you may want to rethink your visit since you have to travel there in one, but please don’t let it scare you into coming. The airline has one of the best track record in history.

You’ll have to take this little plane there.

Since it’s a tropical island you’re going to be surrounded by water. That means that you are always close to a beach so don’t forget to pack your swimsuit. Tropical beaches and tropical fruits are always in abundance and there’s always a fruit in season. You can try mangoes or even a few of the local ones that you may never have heard of or tried in your native land. See that pic of me, that’s me eating one of the tropical fruit called a golden apple at 9 months.

The people are very friendly and helpful and you’d definitely feel at home.

Here are pictures my mom took of the beautiful sunset that you can see while visiting the lovely St. Vincent and the Grenadines and also a picture of the view from my grandma’s house. Notice the lovely water surrounding the island. Just think of seeing your feet while you take a wade in that lovely ocean.
