They say:

Necessity is the mother of invention.
Or, in my case, I was being a plain ol' cheapskate. I LOVE loofah soaps, but I was getting tired of spending the exorbitant fees that they ask for them. As someone who enjoys making her own soaps, such as this lavender exfoliating soap, my vanilla rosebuds petals soap, and Madison's unicorn poop soap,  I figured, they couldn't be that hard to make, could they? And there just had to be a way to make my own. But I had to admit; I was just lazy.

It wasn't until I was on the final bar that I decided, why not make my own loofah soap? So I gathered up some supplies and made a lemon one which turned out really lovely, and since I'm in love with citrus, I figured, why not grapefruit? I always have to have grapefruit in my house as brown sugar broiled grapefruit is one of my favorite ways to eat them.

For this soap, instead of my usual goats' milk soap base, which I almost always use when I make my soaps, I decided on an olive oil glycerin soap base. With the olive oil base, I didn't need to use any extra oils, and olive oil is fantastic for your skin. The grapefruit essential oil will cut through the dirt and grime after a long day.

Here's what you'll need:

1lb Olive Oil Glycerin Soap Base
20 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil
Red or Pink Mica Soap Colorant
Natural Loofah
Round Silicone Mold

*This recipe will make approximately 4 loofah soaps.

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1: Begin by cutting your loofah into 1" slices with your serrated knife, and place each piece into the mold's bottom.

STEP 2: Melt 1 pound of your olive oil soap base in a 30 second increment in a microwave-safe bowl, then 10 second increments, stirring after each session with a wooden chopstick (my instrument of choice) until completely melted.

STEP 3: Once your soap base has melted completely, let it cool slightly before adding your soap colorant and grapefruit essential oil to your melted soap base. If you're using the mica color, you don't need a lot, as a little goes a long way. For liquid colorant, I would add about 2-3 drops as you don't want it saturated in color.

STEP 4: Spray the bottom of your mold with the alcohol spray, then pour your soap base into the silicone mold and spray once again with rubbing alcohol to remove bubbles. Let it sit untouched to cool and harden for about an hour. If you want to speed up the process, you can place it in the refrigerator, and it'll be done in about 20 minutes.

STEP 5: Once it's set and hardened, remove your loofah soap from the silicone mold and enjoy.

Loofah soaps are great for exfoliating dry skin. While you can use it in the shower, personally, I wouldn't use citrus in the shower, as I find them to be a bit too harsh. I think they work better as degreasers and as gardeners soaps.

You can customize this loofah soap any way you want. Change up the essential oils for a different fragrance, use a different soap base, or even add other carriers oils such as jojoba, sweet almond oil, or coconut oil to the mixture. There are so many ways you can make this your own; you can even change the color.

Wrap your loofah soap in a pretty bow or cute cardstock and give it to neighbors and friends. Your new loofah soap will make a great gift for Father's Day that is fast approaching or even a "just because" gift. The possibilities are endless.
