Make this Lucky St. Patrick's Day Tee with Cricut ~ #CricutCreated

St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner and I wanted to get a headstart on the holiday. Are you looking for a St. Patrick's Day tee that is one of a kind? Create one of your own with the Cricut Explore Air 2.

Ever since I got my Cricut Explore Air 2, there's been no stopping my creativity. I've made tees, coasters, totes and even mugs. There are Circut created creations around my home, so many that my husband has been saying that I need to slow down. But how can I? Once you can imagine it, you can make it, and with the Cricut Easy Press 2, the possibilities are endless.

I used to be one of those parents who would run to the store for every holiday and pick up the tees that they had in store. However, the problem with that meant that Madison, and sometimes myself, had tees that everyone else had. While I didn't mind, sometimes I like being different, so having something that I did myself helps.

A few years ago I created a St. Patrick's Day printable for Madison's website. It's one that I printed, framed and placed in her room. Growing up, my dad would always say "you create your own luck",  so for St. Patrick's Day I decided to recreate it myself and with the help of my Cricut Explore Air 2, replicate it on a tee for Madison. Here's something that you may not know? You can turn printables into SVG files and then upload them to your Cricut Space, and it's easier than you think. There are many sites online that can convert your .jpg, .png or even pdf files into an SVG file.

  • Log into your Cricut Design Space
  • Click on the Create New Project button
  • Click the Upload Image button.
  • Click the Browse button and locate the .svg file that you want to import and insert.

It's super easy, just as this St. Patrick's Day tee we're sharing with you today.

Here's what you'll need:

SUPPLIES

Cricut Explore Air 2
Cricut EasyPress 2
Cricut StandardGrip Mat
Easy Press Mat
Holographic Sparkle Iron -On Sampler, Raspberry Fizz
Heat Resistant Tape
Weeder
Tees
Lint Roller

DIRECTIONS

For this project, I'm using the gold sheet from the holographic sampler pack which includes gold, silver, and fuschia, but you can also use any vinyl iron-on of your choosing. I also picked up this tie-dye tee that I thought would be perfect for this project, but you can use plain white tees.

1. Open Cricut Design Space and start a new project. You can find this project under my profile page. There it's already set for you and all you need to do is recreate it with your favorite vinyl-iron-on. If you want to add more details, simply click on text, images, etc, and add whatever your heart desires.

2. When you are satisfied with your design, click on make it in the top right corner, but before you cut, make sure that you mirror your design. Mirroring will ensure that when it's time to layer on your tee that the words are shown correctly.

3. Next set your dial to custom and choose Holographic Iron-On from the material list. I've found that choosing the exact iron-on that I'm using, it cuts the material better than me just switching the dial to a standard iron-on.

Place your Iron-On on your mat with the liner side (the shiny side) down, press cut. Load your mat with your iron-on and hit the go button. The design space will guide you through cutting so you can't go wrong. Once the cutting is done, remove your design from the liner using your weeding tool.

4. For this project, you're also going to want to measure your tee and use half of that size for your design. Madison's shirt was close to 12" across, but I wanted her design to take up most of the shirt so I made it just close to 9" across, so it would more than half. Prep your tee by using removing all lint with a lint roller.

5. Using the Cricut Heat Guide, heat up your EasyPress 2 to the desired temperature, (in our case it was 330°) and using your EasyPress mat, preheat your shirt for 5 seconds using the EasyPress 2. Place your design with the liner side facing up onto your shirt and attach it with the heat resistant tape to prevent sliding. Press your shirt with the EasyPress 2 with light pressure for 30 seconds.

6. Flip your shirt and press the other side for another 15 seconds. Slowly remove the liner from your shirt and design while still warm, and you're all done. It's now ready for wear and you have a one of a kind tee that's uniquely yours.

The most time-consuming part of this project was weeding the design making sure that I got all the little pieces. From start to finish this project took less than 20 minutes and is great for those wanting a quick and easy project for St. Patrick's Day.

Now you can easily design your own St. Patrick's Day tee as there are many designs in the Cricut Design Space that you can customize, or simply make your own. So get your creative side going and pick up a Cricut Explore Air 2 and EasyPress 2 and get crafting.

How to Unclog and Maintain your Drains Without Chemicals

When you run the tap, and the water starts piling up, you know you have a problem on your hands. It's an annoying issue that will leave you without an essential drain in your bathroom or kitchen. If you're itching to solve it without using any caustic chemicals, you're in for a treat. There are lots of harmless ways to deal with a clogged drain available, so there's no need to worry. Here are some notable examples.

CHECK YOUR OTHER TAPS
Before you start to plan bathroom remodeling, you can get down to unclog the drain yourself; you have to figure out where the actual problem is located. If the clog is somewhere around the vicinity of the clogged drain, you're not going to have any difficulty clearing it. However, should the clog be further down in some of the deeper piping, your efforts on the drain would be wasted.

The question is - how do you figure out whether the problem is localized or not? The simplest answer would be to take a look at all the other drains in your house. If they're flowing freely, you can be confident that the problem is located near the clogged drain. If, on the other hand, multiple drains are showing signs of blockages, you might need the help of a professional.

VACUUM IT UP
If you're looking to avoid getting your hands dirty, a vacuum could come in handy. Before you start reaching for the one you have stashed in your closet, you might want to reconsider. You'll need a special kind of vacuum to properly unclog the drain.

A wet-dry vacuum can be pretty helpful in avoiding most of the mess that comes with clearing a drain. For one, you don't have to deal with all the water that's backed up from not being able to pass the clogged part. You can just set the vacuum to "wet" and dry off everything all the way up to the clog. Once the liquid is taken care of, you can start working to unclog the drain.

Take the hose part of the vacuum and place it on the drain's vent. Try to get as much of a tight seal as you can on it. Unless you're incredibly lucky, the vacuum won't exactly be a snug fit for the vent, so you have to get a little creative. Use some duct tape to create a seal between the vent and vacuum, so that it can actually do its job. Set the vacuum to its most powerful setting and let it rip. With a little luck and some vacuuming magic, you might actually get enough pull to dislodge the clog. Afterward, it's probably not going to cause you a lot of problems. Even if it's not entirely outside of the pipes, the clog won't be able to adhere to the wall and block drainage anymore.

BOIL UP SOME WATER
For this method, you won't need anything but some water and a stovetop. Pour a liter of water into a pot and set it on the stove. If you aren't feeling particularly confident that it will work, you can increase the amount to a couple of liters.

Once you've brought it to boiling, take it off the stove. Carefully pour the boiling water into the drain, but do it slowly. The longer it pours, the more time the water has to act. Try to avoid getting splashed, as it could cause you to drop the whole pot and lead to further injury. After pouring the pot, you should run the tap and see if there's any extra movement. If so, repeat the process until it clears completely.

TAKE THE DRAIN APART
If you're sure that the clog is pretty close to the actual drain, but you can't deal with it using conventional methods, it might be time to do some manual removal. Taking the drain apart is a relatively simple task that will make it a lot easier to reach the problematic clog in question.

Many drains are designed to be taken apart easily for this purpose. If there's a trap door behind the faucet or tub, you can pretty easily reach in and take out a bit of the piping to inspect it. This can allow you to manually remove the clog with the use of your hands or tools that you have at your disposal.

Should the clog be a little too far to reach, you're pretty much out of options. It would be wise to consider professional blocked drain cleaning at this point. The deeper pipes might have to be taken out, but at least you'll have a functional drain after the ordeal.

MIX BAKING SODA AND VINEGAR
If you've ever consulted older family members on how to fix a clog yourself, they've probably recommended baking soda and vinegar. It's an old DIY method of clearing the drain, which only requires these two ingredients, which you already have in your kitchen. It's a pretty simple method which relies on some basic chemistry, while not using any actual commercial chemicals. This will help to keep your bathroom chemical-free and green.

All you need to do is get the two substances down the drain in equal proportions. Take a third of a cup of baking soda and try to get it as deep into the drain as possible. Follow up with a third of a cup of vinegar and watch as it fizzes into a foam. This chemical reaction is often used for cleaning fatty and oily stains, which makes it great for kitchen drain clogs. Let it sit in the drain overnight, and it should do its job. In the morning, you can pour some boiling water down the drain to check if it's been effective.

CONCLUSION
Clearing a clogged drain is a pretty difficult task, but it's still mostly manageable for the average homeowner. All you need is some basic household items, and you should be able to take care of the problem. Should the clog be a bit too strong for DIY work, there's always a professional available to solve the issue. You lose nothing from making an attempt of your own, so it's worth a try.

Beginner's Guide to an Urban Garden

If you're anything like me, you're a city dweller who dreams of luscious garden greens, bright blossoms, and self-grown foods. A few years ago while living in New York City, my thumb decided it was time to turn green, and I was hit with the bug to build and cultivate my own garden. The trouble was, it was stuck smack dab in the middle of a large city. The only flowers nearby where ones arranged in fancy flower shops and the nearest community garden was too far away for a weekly commute.

What's a girl to do? Why, create her own personal urban garden, of course! Now, the sound of tending to your own personal garden in a smaller apartment space, or away from easily accessible garden grounds can seem a bit intimidating. In all actuality, however, getting plants and even foods to thrive in my apartment space was easier than I had anticipated. It was a year of trial and error. With several victories and some clear failures, I feel prepared to help others like myself to start their own urban garden. So, here's my beginner's guide to starting your own urban garden.

EVALUATE YOUR SPACE
I'm going to make the assumption that, because you're ready this, you've already gotten into the idea of gardening in your own home. Without getting too in-depth about supplies, soils, and watering (all of which depend on a multitude of factors), the first question you should be asking yourself is: what are you wanting to grow? Your answer is important, and your apartment, condo, or home will affect that answer. Before you start dreaming up the plants that'll thrive in your space, it's best to know:

  • Which directions are my window oriented?
  • How much natural light does my space get?
  • When direction does the sun enter my space?
  • At what time?
  • For how long?

You might be thinking, isn't that overkill? Well, no. Although it's not necessary to know all of this information right of the bat, knowing how and when sunlight enters your space will greatly affect how happy the plants are in your home. This can affect what you choose to plant, and where you decide to place it. It also helps when you're inspecting the plant instruction labels that come with most ready to pot plants and seed packets.

For example, if your space is shadier throughout the day, growing plants that need six or more hours of direct or indirect sunlight might not be your best bet without some major help from supplemental lighting.

Hint: If you're like me and out of your living space most of the day, set up a small camera, GoPro, laptop, or phone to record your living space for a full day. Go back and look at how the light hits your space. Do this as the seasons change to get a better idea of when to move plants around.

INDOOR OR OUTDOOR?
Ah, the biggest question. Should you create an indoor garden or find an outdoor space. For me, the answer is both. Although I don't get to my community garden often, I do find outdoor gardening a nice change of pace. In fact, there are many studies that show how mentally beneficial it can be to spend time outdoors and amongst nature. It's not only a chance to get out, meet likeminded individuals, and grow a garden in the open air, but it can help to soothe ailments like anxiety and ADHD. I'm all for it, and you should be too if there's a reasonable option.

If you can't find a community garden, I recommend talking to your city about starting one of your own. If that's not in the cards, there's always an opportunity to use your own (or a friend's) terrace, patio, window sill, or rooftop space.

Personally, I get most of my gardening done in my own dwelling. It's convenient for my schedule, and I get to come home to some lovely house plants. As for you, figure out what you want to grow and why. Your answer to the indoor or outdoor question lies somewhere in there.

USE CONTAINERS
Container planting is ridiculously simple, and I always recommend it for those just starting out. Whether your container planting in your home, on your rooftop, or on a patio, containers are easy to move, store, and grow from. For myself, container planting was an excellent way to experiment with growing various flowers (and some smaller fruit bushes) without having to invest in expensive pottery. I simply ran to a hardware store, grabbed a few half-gallon water buckets and:

  • Drilled simple drainage holes (sometimes using a stacking method with the containers, letting water drain from one right into the bottom of another container, like a functional water reserve).
  • Filled them with appropriate potting soil.
  • Planted the seeds or established plants.

It was so inexpensive that I was able to spend a bit more on higher-quality fertilizers for fruit bushes. I even used an extra container to start my own mini compost pile. Yes, a compost pile. It's not for everyone, but I make sure to properly keep my compost pile, so it doesn't attract unwanted attention or pests. My container plants love their well-balanced soils, and I've loved getting to better understand how to keep them happy!

IT'S OK TO FAIL
When I first began experimenting with caring for various plants, I thought everything would go swimmingly. With more than a few house plants down for the count and no fruit on one of my strawberry bushes, I thought maybe my green thumb was actually black. The most important thing is to not give up if gardening is a new hobby or passion. It takes time to become intuitive to a plant's needs. It's a game of trial and error when you're first planting inside your home. Keep at it, and soon you'll have your own little urban jungle or garden.

How to Have Fun With Teens in Berlin ~ #VistGermany #VisitBerlin

If you're planning a trip to Berlin with teenagers in the mix, you're in luck. The capital of Germany has tons to offer virtually anyone and everyone - including teens. The city is home to a number of sights, attractions, and activities to keep the whole family entertained, from historical monuments and museums to unforgettable meals and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Whether your teen is interested in history, embraces their adventurous side, or just wants to explore and see what Berlin is all about, you're guaranteed to have a great time here.

Want to make sure your Berlin itinerary has plenty for your teen to enjoy? Here are some great ways to have fun with teenagers in Berlin:

SOAR TO THE TOP OF THE BERLIN TV TOWER
Many of Berlin's best views can be found at the tops of government buildings or churches, accessible by a long climb. But there's one view you won't want to miss out on - and that's the view from the top of the Berlin TV Tower. Topping out at 1,207 feet tall, guests don't ride to the very top of the building, but you'll get to see plenty from the observation deck, which sits just over 650 feet high.

You can take the stairs if you want, but you can save yourself the 1000 steps and rocket to the top in a high-tech elevator, which can take you up to the viewing deck in 40 seconds flat. While you're up there, you can enjoy sweeping views of Berlin below, snap some photos, and grab a bite to eat in the revolving restaurant - always a novel experience!

EXPLORE THE CITY IN A TRABANT - OR BY BIKE!
There's no wrong way to see Berlin. You can take a walking tour of the city - free or paid - or experience the sights and sounds of Berlin by boat tour. However, there are other more exciting ways you can tour the city if you're on a mission to have a bit of fun.

One option? Traverse the city in a Trabant. These little vintage cars were all the rage in East Germany, and now they're a hit among tourists who want to cruise around the city and have a blast while they're at it. These tiny, often brightly-painted cars are a ton of fun. Sign up for a guided tour, or rent one on your own and take it for a spin around town.

Prefer to explore at a slower pace? How about biking? While Berlin isn't quite Amsterdam in terms of bike-friendliness, it's relatively bike-friendly and easy to navigate. Berlin offers several different guided bike tours that you can sign up for, or you can rent a bike and set off on your own to see what you'd like. Even if it's been ages since you've hopped on a bike, you may be surprised to find just how much fun you have.

LEAP FROM THE ROOF OF THE PARK INN HOTEL
That's right! Berlin's tallest hotel, the Park Inn Hotel, actually features a base flying adventure from its rooftop. If your teen is an adrenaline junkie, this will definitely get their blood pumping, and they won't forget the feeling of soaring above the Alexanderplatz at nearly freefall speeds. It's a quick adventure, but well worth it for fans of adventure.

You'll be equipped with a helmet that holds a front-facing camera, making this the ultimate selfie experience. For a souvenir, you literally can't get anywhere else, splurge on a copy of your recording when your flight is over.

Be sure to check the schedule for this as this was at the top of Mikael's list when we visited Berlin, but they're closed during the winter months.

TAKE AN UNDERGROUND TOUR
For a totally new perspective of Berlin, sign up for an underground tour and experience one of the bunkers that protected civilians during WWII bombing raids. You'll feel like you stepped back into history in this immersive experience, making it an engaging way for teens to get a glimpse of the past. Knowledgeable guides explain the way the shelters were once used and share stories that highlight their importance in saving lives during the war.

Only some tours are offered in English, so you'll want to plan ahead to make sure you secure a spot on one of them!

HAVE SOME FUN AT MADAME TUSSAUD'S WAX MUSEUM
Have you dreamed of seeing your favorite celebrities, political figures, and historic legends in the flesh? You can make it happen at Madame Tussaud's - well, almost. This museum houses lifelike wax figures designed to replicate the world's most well-known people, and it's the perfect spot to snap some photos with stars you'll likely never see in person.

If you haven't been to one of the many Madame Tussaud's museums before, you're in for a treat. The wax sculptures are truly works of art, and in some cases, they look more like the people they're trying to replicate than the actual person does. And you'll find more than just replicas of stars - you can immerse yourself in your favorite movie scenes, have a ball in the interactive football arena, and experience a hologram.

CHECK OUT THE GAME SCIENCE CENTER
If your teen is into video games, which my teen is, they'll appreciate stopping by the Game Science Center to experience the cutting edge in video gaming technology. Even if you don't play video games, you'll be amazed by the technology available to help players get immersed in virtual worlds and navigate digital puzzles.

Play games on massive touch screens, try your hand at virtual table tennis, experiment with augmented reality, and see if you can control a video game using only your eyes - no hands allowed! This museum is fueled by start-ups and is continually rotating exhibits, so you'll have to stop by and see what you can do for yourself! You can stay here for quite a few hours trying to master it all like we did.

Visiting Berlin with teenagers can be a great way to make memories together and build those family bonds before they're off to college. As long as you take their preferences into consideration when planning your trip and incorporate some teen-friendly activities into the mix, you'll be guaranteed to have a great time together.

Free and Cheap Things To Do in Copenhagen ~ #VisitDenmark #VisitCopenhagen

Denmark isn't the cheapest country to visit in Europe - in fact; it's one of the more expensive destinations you can choose there. But if you're looking for a new spot to explore that's rich with culture and history, with a high level of safety and friendly locals, you won't find a place better than Copenhagen. Denmark's capital city is a bustling hub of commerce and culture, a food-lover's paradise, and a great spot to escape and enjoy for a few days.

If you want to check out Copenhagen but don't want to blow your travel budget, there are things you can do to ease the blow on your bank account, like adding some low- or no-cost activities to your itinerary. While you'll undoubtedly spend money on some can't-miss attractions around town, there are plenty of ways you can have fun and experience the best Copenhagen has to offer without spending much money - or any at all.

Not sure what that looks like? I'm here to help! Here are some of the top free and cheap things to do while you're in Copenhagen:

WATCH THE CHANGING OF THE GUARDS
Experience a local tradition firsthand by witnessing the changing of the guards at the Queen's Palace. The Royal Guard marches from the Rosenborg Castle to the palace each day in a parade. They leave at 11:30 a.m., and once they reach the palace, they perform the official changing of the guards. Grab a spot along the parade route to witness the soldiers stepping in unison, or position yourself at the Amalienborg Palace to watch the actual transition.

This quick glimpse into Danish tradition is well worth a quick stop!

WANDER THROUGH BAKKEN, THE WORLD'S OLDEST AMUSEMENT PARK
Don't want to spend a ton of cash but want to experience the very first theme park ever built? Plan a visit to Bakken. Unlike American theme parks that generally charge a flat admission fee for unlimited rides, Bakken is free for all to enter and experience - you'll just need to purchase tickets if you'd like to ride anything. Even if you decide against stepping onto a roller coaster or splurging on a spin around the carousel, the tranquil forest setting and fun, family-friendly atmosphere makes it worth a visit on its own. And if you do want to ride something, the a-la-carte ticketing system means you'll only pay as much as you're willing to spend.

PERUSE THE FREDERIKSBERG FLEA MARKET
For a fun, free spot to window-shop and people-watch, check out the Frederiksberg flea market. Open each Saturday from spring until early fall, this market is located in one of the more upscale areas of town. Because of this, the goods you'll find for sale at the market are often quality items offered at a great price.

You'll find all kinds of things, from jewelry and decor to books, toys, and antiques. Food and drink vendors are on hand in case hunger strikes, or you decide you'd like to slow down and enjoy a cold beverage. One thing to note about the Frederiksberg flea market is that it differs from many international markets in that the prices are fixed - haggling doesn't happen here - so be prepared to pay what's listed if you decide you'd like to grab a souvenir.

MAKE A SPLASH AT THE HAVNEBADET ISLANDS BYGGE
Visiting Copenhagen during the warm summer months? Want to cool off? The locals have a solution that's totally free - a swim at the Havnebadet Islands Brygge. This outdoor pool is positioned next to one of the city's many canals and is entirely free to the public, making it a popular destination for folks looking to swim during the summer months.

Fair warning to families traveling with children - topless swimming is allowed here. While the Danes don't find this local custom strange, folks from more modest countries may be taken aback.

CLIMB THE ROUND TOWER
For an excellent view of the city below and a fantastic photo opportunity, climb to the top of the Round Tower. This tower was built during the 1600s and was initially used as an observatory, allowing early astronomers to watch the night skies. While this attraction isn't free, $5 is a small price to pay for the chance to get such a great glimpse of Copenhagen's charming skyline. Unlike many towers, you climb a ramp - not a staircase - to reach the top, making it a long but gentle journey to the pinnacle.

EXPLORE THE COMMUNITY OF CHRISTIANIA
The FreeTown of Christiania was established in the 1970s as an "alternative society," and the government of Copenhagen has generally let the people who live there do what they will. Photographs are generally discouraged - the area is a hotbed for less-than-savory types who would prefer to avoid pictures when dealing in illegal activities - but if you're willing to brave the streets, you'll be treated to a colorful assortment of self-assembled homes, streetside gardens and other trademarks of hippie communities.

Explore the area, and you'll find several tasty restaurants, art galleries, souvenir shops, concert venues, and more.

EXPLORE THE BOTANICAL GARDEN
Copenhagen's well-loved botanical gardens are situated in the heart of the city, a lush green oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle. Outside, you can wander through a series of gardens spotlighting different flowers, trees from specific regions, and other locally-inspired settings.

The real highlight, however, is the glasshouses - old greenhouses, some of which date back to 1874. Different rooms simulate different environments, with varying temperatures and humidity levels, allowing plants and flowers from around the world to thrive. The palm house and butterfly house are two you won't want to miss, but you won't be disappointed regardless of which rooms you decide to wander through.

While you'll have a hard time visiting Copenhagen without spending some cash, you can definitely take steps to keep costs low by adding some cheap and free plans into your days. Aside from helping you save a few bucks, you'll find these attractions and activities are just as fun - and in many situations, more entertaining - than some of the more expensive attractions you'll enjoy.

Figuring Out FICO

It would be hard to get through life working on an entirely cash-only system, although for some, that approach is successful. However, for large purchases such as a residence, an automobile or heavy machinery, you may need financial assistance to conduct your transaction. In order to evaluate your financial reputation, potential lenders check your credit score. This is a number that represents what a lender can expect with your creditworthiness and your financial habits.

A credit score can be taken from several different reporting agencies, although a FICO score tends to be the final number taken from these reports. Between Equifax and Experian there are 16 different scores that could be reported to a lender, and the other leading reporting company, TransUnion, has 21 different scores. It is said that there are more than 50 FICO scores that could be reported, and new score types are added each year. The past few years have seen some changes in the FICO scoring models, an adjustment that could create a FICO score update for your credit report.

INDUSTRY-SPECIFIC REPORTING AND SCORING
The type of loan or financing that is being requested influence what scores are reported. The industry-specific scores make it possible to obtain products like auto loans, credit cards, or furniture leasing. The information these credit reports provide is similar in nature to the classic scores FICO issues, but there are some tweaks made to account for potentially risky behavior that is industry-specific. For instance, if you are attempting to buy a car, the bank or dealership that may offer you the loan might want to know your history with paying similar loans over a course of time. They then factor in the other accounts of credit card payments, rent payments, or utility payments to assess what kind of risk your loan might be. The scoring models for these industry-specific scores are much different from classic scores, as the industry-specific range extends from 250 to 900. Classic scores only range between 300 and 850.

UNDERSTANDING THE SCORING MODELS
You won’t be able to calculate a credit score on your own, even though you may know the different areas that impact your score and what your standings in those categories are. Companies that have created the scoring models have kept the calculation algorithms under lock and key, because of the financial benefit they receive from selling the results of the models. There are five primary areas of calculation, and these include credit history, credit utilization, credit payments, credit accounts, and new credit applications. More specifically, the following factors are important contributors to your score.

  • Missed payments, collections, bankruptcies, foreclosures
  • Employment history and occupation
  • Your residence situation (rent or own)
  • Length of time at your current residence
  • Credit inquiries over the last few months or years
  • Balances available or used in open credit accounts
  • Credit report length and credit history with the reporting agency
  • Your age

SCORING MODEL UPDATES
The first credit scoring models came on the scene over 50 years ago. The financial industry was looking for a reliable but repeatable method of evaluating, underwriting, and administering credit debt. The need for financial evaluations included home mortgages, automobile loans, credit cards, or direct and indirect consumer installment loans. The earliest models were based on subjective criteria, and the end result was an increase in fraudulent credit and loan practices and approvals, as well as discriminatory decisions with borrower’s applications. Federal and state legislatures got involved, and protections were established to make the lending process more transparent, equitable, and fair. Two of the most well-known protections are the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

THE BENEFITS OF USING A MODEL
Prior to the scoring models, approval for financial assistance could take days or weeks. This could hurt the borrower in the case of time-sensitive purchases. Speed has become one of the most significant benefits of using a credit scoring model, as thousands of applications are able to be processed quickly and impartially. It could take as little as a few minutes for a lender to approve decisions for car loans, mortgages, and even things like extended a limit on a current credit card. The data that comes from scoring models also makes financial statements, credit accounts, and credit ratings more accurate even though they can be issued very quickly.

These models also help limit human errors, things that could present serious liabilities in today’s litigious culture. It also reduces the losses a company could experience as a result of bad debt. Without the warnings or red flags that a scoring model issue, businesses may be too hasty in extended credit to unreliable customers. A business is able to specify what information or factors they want to be assessed when processing an application, giving valuable insight as to whether they will be working with a low-risk or high-risk customer. These decisions improve business efficiency and reduce the cost of issuing car loans, credit cards, and mortgages.

CONSUMER BENEFITS OF SCORING MODELS
A consumer is able to obtain much needed financial support when a credit score can be used to demonstrate credit-worthiness. Personal loans can be acquired for a variety of reasons, but a credit score reduces the subjectivity or judgment that had been used in the past to evaluate whether or not a person should be given a chance at credit. The impersonal score, apart from the decisions of the consumer that create the score, makes it much easier for individuals to know their potential when applying for funds. Consumers are also in control of their score, with a higher score and better lending terms being the reward for on-time payments or other responsible payments of any debts. The length of stable credit history also improves a consumer's potential for gaining access to additional credit lines in the future when the need arises.

It can take a lifetime to build up a high FICO score and only one missed or late payment to ruin it. Whenever you think about your financial situation, always take care to protect your credit score and financial reputation.

8 Smart Tips for Managing Your Grocery Budget

We are all looking for ways to optimize our shopping dollars. And for families with kids, it's even more important to look for bargains and make the most out of as little as possible.

Cutting your food bill means you can spend more on things you cherish, like a special trip with your family or putting more money aside for retirement.

With a bit of time and research, you can shop smart and find ways to trim your grocery spending while stretching your budget, and still providing your family with nutritious meals is possible.

To prevent your grocery shopping from busting your budget, try the tactics listed below in the coming weeks.

DETERMINE YOUR GROCERY BUDGET
First, decide how much you want to spend on groceries. You can use your latest bank statements as a starting point if you are not sure where to start.

According to the Department of Agriculture, a family of four spends between $205 and $245 every week for a moderate-cost food plan. Your own costs depend on the available budget and dietary needs of your family members.

A grocery budget calculator might come in handy to get an estimate and cut costs.

MEAL PLANNING
Planning your menus is a great way to save some dollars (and calories). We all turn to pizza or cheeseburger on our way home from time to time, as it seems easier. These impulsive purchases quickly add up (as well as the unwanted weight).

Nobody wants to spend hours in the kitchen meal prepping every day, so use this trick – cook all main dishes for an entire week in one day!
Another cunning trick is to adapt your weekly menu according to your store's weekly circular. And when you are all out of ideas, you can find menu plans online for free or at about $5.00 a month.

Also, use the websites that help you prep a meal based on the ingredients you already have.

BUY THE ITEMS THAT ARE ON SALE
Look for clearance sections in stores – the discounted overripe bananas are perfect for smoothies and homemade banana bread. You can stock up and freeze certain products like meat and veggies when you come upon a great deal.

Clearing inventory on weekdays means certain goods are cheaper, so that's the best time to do your shopping.

Buying in bulks can also save you money. It is time to load up whenever you see a majority of items you regularly use on a sale, like ten cans of your favorite soup going for $10.

Downloading budgeting apps can score you substantial savings. Most stores offer mobile apps that will help you cut your food spending.

MAKE A SHOPPING LIST
Making a list (and sticking to it) is still the best way to manage your grocery spending. You don't even need a pen and paper anymore. You can just download an app, and you are good to go.

The best grocery list apps allow you to share the list with your family members, find recipes based on your selection, add special notes, or set reminders on meal prep days. Some of these smart apps allow you to track how much of certain goods you have left in your home. Kids are especially prone to grabbing things that are shiny and colorful, and the retailers are counting on that. It is vital you talk about money management with your little ones and help them build age-appropriate financial awareness.

Creating a grocery list before the actual shopping will prevent you from making an impulsive purchase. It will ensure you get everything you need, too.

USE A PRICE BOOK
Keep track of which stores have the lowest prices on certain products. This really helps save money.

By making your own price book, you'll be able to determine sales patterns, and since sales usually go in cycles, you'll know when it's the best time to stock up.

Use a notebook and write an item at the top of the paper. List the price and the store where it can be found. To be sure you are getting the most bang for your buck, use the cost per unit instead of a retail price. This will help you track the savings more precisely.

A price book will help you track store circulars for weekly sales and compare prices to find the best deal for the goods you are looking for.
A useful tip – most circulars can be found online, so checking them is as effortless as it can be.

SWITCH TO STORE BRANDS
Be open-minded and try the brands you don't usually use if they are on sale or come with a lower price tag. You can save a lot of money by opting for store-brand goods.

The quality of the store brand products might surprise you! Many of the items are made in the same factories as big-name brands, but store brands save on having no advertisements. This means you can get these groceries at a much lower price without sacrificing taste or quality.

A few dollars here and there add up to significant savings over time. You can save almost $20 for dinner alone if you opt for generic products. And if you do the math that is $80 a month and $1,040 a year just if you switch brands for dinner!

LOOK FOR ONLINE BARGAINS
Online vendors offer lower prices, even up to 50 percent off regional grocery chains' prices. If you are using an online grocery store for the first time, you will be waived the delivery fee or given discounts for new consumers.

Even with the delivery costs, you can save money buying online.

USE COUPONS
Having coupons can drastically lower the price tags on certain items. They can even cost less than the store brand sometimes.

There are retailers that double or even triple manufacturers' paper coupons every day, every week, or less regularly. Locate those stores and save even more money.

Matching the coupons to the items that are already on sale can help you cut your grocery bill even more. There are many coupon websites that can guide you on this subject and help you save a significant amount of money.

Remember to coupon wisely! Don't spend money on things just because it's a discount. Again, stick to the list you created!

When you track your grocery purchases, you can prevent overspending in the next week/month. You don't have to resort to extreme couponing to tighten up your spending habits.

Smart grocery shopping can help you get in control of your finances without too much of a hassle.

Best Free and Cheap things To Do When You're In Munich ~ #VisitMunich #VisitGermany

If you haven't been to Munich, make sure you add it to your list of spots to visit! This German city is filled with world-class museums and churches, hosts some of the best festivals you'll find anywhere, and is well-positioned if you're on a mission to explore the area through day trips, making it a natural addition to most travelers itineraries.

Another good reason to visit Munich? It's pretty budget-friendly. Many of the city's best attractions are free or come at a minimal price, so it's easy to see and do a lot without spending up all of your Euros.

Not so sure how you can have fun in Munich without spending a ton of cash? I have some ideas! Here are just a few of the best free and cheap things you can do when you're in Munich:

EXPLORE OLYMPIAPARK
Olympiapark is a massive complex of parks, stadiums, and other facilities originally built to support the 1972 Summer Olympics. Once the Games concluded, Munich faced the same challenge that other host cities struggle with: what to do with the new infrastructure once the games are finished.

Instead of letting it fall into disrepair, Munich converted Olympiapark into a spot locals and tourists alike can enjoy. Aside from getting to tour the park and see some of the buildings where history was made during the Olympic games, you can participate in a variety of fun activities while you're there. Go for a swim or a spin on the ice rink, get a bird' s-eye view of the city from the Olympic Tower, check out the Sea Life aquarium, and more!

You can also check the local event calendar to see if there are any concerts, sporting games, or performances worth seeing while you're in town.

TOUR THE FRAUENKIRCHE CHURCH
The Frauenkirche in Munich is one of the city's most recognizable and historically significant churches, and it's absolutely free to visit, making it a must-do when you're trying to enjoy the city on a budget. You can tour the church's plain but striking interior; still, the real allure of the Frauenkirche is the opportunity to climb one of the church's two towers, the onion-domed spires that stretch skyward over the rooftops of Munich. It's definitely one of the best views of the city, so don't miss your chance to appreciate it firsthand.

WALK THROUGH THE MARIENPLATZ
A trademark of many European cities is a large, central public square, and Munich is no exception. The Marienplatz is the heart and soul of Munich, and you'd be missing out if you didn't stroll through at least once while you're in town.

The square itself doesn't always contain much of interest, except for the occasional market or festival, but the buildings that line the square are excellent examples of Munich's early architecture. Grab lunch or a snack at a local cafe and people-watch for a little while, or time your visit to see the Rathaus Glockenspiel perform its traditional show, which takes place a few times each day.

TAKE A FREE WALKING TOUR
One of the best ways to get a feel for a city is to explore on foot. While taking cabs and public transportation can be quick and convenient, you don't always get a chance to truly experience a city when you're shuttling from one spot to the next, going underground to pop up again at the next tourist spot.

Instead, bring a good pair of walking shoes and hit the pavement. For a great, free way to learn more about your destination and see what it's all about, find a free walking tour. Some cities offer free tours as a service through the local tourism department, while in others, you'll find free tours available out of the kindness of the locals' hearts - and their desire to share the city they love with curious visitors.

There's a good chance your tour will take you through the Marienplatz and past most of Munich's top attractions. Take one early during your stay to orient yourself and make it easier to navigate the city for the rest of your trip.

WATCH LOCAL SURFERS RIDE THE EISBACH WAVE
Witnessing the local surf scene firsthand may not be what you had in mind when you planned a trip to Munich, but while you're there, you'll want to check out this bizarrely entertaining attraction. Tucked away in the Englischer Garten, there's a certain spot where a man-made stream has generated a never-ending wave. When the locals found out, they did what anyone would do - brought out their surfboards and took advantage of the opportunity!

Since the wave never breaks, surfers can ride the wave as long as they can maintain it - which, in some cases, can go on for quite a while. Stick around long enough, and you'll get the chance to watch surfers of all skill levels, from beginner to seemingly professional, have a blast on the water.

VISIT A MUSEUM FOR A EURO ON SUNDAYS
While more and more European cities are moving away from making museums free to the public, many still offer free and discounted days, and Munich is no exception. If you're in town on a Sunday, consider incorporating a museum or two into your itinerary - many of the town's best exhibits only cost a single Euro on Sundays, making it an absolute steal of a price to pay to see some world-class artwork.

You can visit the Alte Pinakothek, one of the world's oldest art galleries, or explore the Bavarian National Museum for a taste of German life and history over the centuries. Other museums that participate include the Museum of Man and Nature, the Schack Gallery, and the Egyptian Museum. Whether you prefer art- or history-focused museums, you'll find something to enjoy for a Euro when you're here!

There are clearly lots of different things to see and do when you're in Munich that won't cost a ton of cash. On the contrary, you can easily incorporate a few - if not all - of these activities into your plans to keep your trip to Munich, especially budget-friendly.
