How to Decorate your Home on a Budget

How can you decorate your home on a budget?

My daughter who is in college just recently acquired her very first apartment so we are currently in the process of decorating her new home. While you can get the décor you love without going broke; it just takes a bit more time to decorate your home on a budget, for you will have to get in touch with your inner creativity.  There’s something to be said about a home that screams “welcome home” upon your arrival. While your home doesn’t actually speak to you, there is a mindset change that occurs when you have a home that feels like it’s yours. Today we will discuss how to decorate your home on a budget as a means to freshen up your space without spending a lot of money.

Repurpose Mirrors

Mirrors can make unique décor for your home. Take old mirrors, place felt on the backside, and use them for trays, coffee table décor, or candle holders. Mirrors can also be used to create an illusion of a much larger space than you actually have.

Shop Thrift Stores

Check out your local thrift store for old trays, shelves and such to minimize clutter in a decorative way. You can even find out-of-season furniture sets that will make your home look stylish and organized.

Canvas

Use canvas to create your own art displays to hang on the wall, research online for thumbtack canvas to see how to create a masterpiece for wall décor.

Search Craigslist

Keep an eye on your local Craigslist free section; you’d be surprised how many like-new items you can get for free on this site. You can also find furniture at a lower cost than in the store.

Paint Walls and Furniture

This is an easy way to refresh any room in your home. Paint walls with neutral colors that bring out other items in the room, or paint furniture for a modern look. You don’t need to buy expensive paint; visit your local hardware store and ask for off-brand colors that are much cheaper yet still work great.

Make a Photo Collage

Print off some of your favorite photos and place them on the wall in a specific shape to decorate your wall in a memorable way. You can also try making your own collage using a free collage maker like BeFunky to visualize the idea and then create a unique piece of art.

Build your Own Tables

Pallets seem to be the in thing these days, use Pinterest for some creative ideas on how to use free pallets for tables & other décor.

Small Bowls

You can pick up small bowls from just about anywhere for the price of $1 down to free, use them to store jewelry, keys and other small items to spruce up your storage areas.  Vases – similar to using small bowls, use old vases to place pretend flowers in or store make-up brushes as well as larger kitchen utensils.

Sew It

If you have a sewing machine, use it to make curtains for your windows. This is an affordable way to add color and style to any room in your home.

Make Crafts with Old Magazines

If you have old magazines lying around, don’t throw them away! With the help of some glue, they can be used to create wall décor or coasters. This is an easy way to bring color into your home without spending much money.

There are so many ways you can decorate your home on a budget, from repurposing old items you don’t need to using items on hand in creative ways. If you find that your home is small and you want to make it feel roomier, then use lighter colors in any of your painting options as that will make your space look larger. With a little bit of paint, old items you no longer use, creativity and Pinterest inspired ideas, you certainly can make your home look fabulous without breaking the bank!
