Send Letters of Hope to Syrian Refugees

The date was September 11, 2001, and my son who was less than a year old and myself were heading into the city to go to the NYC Health Department. What started out as a very normal day didn’t end up quite that way. I can still remember it as if it was yesterday, and the horrors that I saw left scars in my mind and has made me see the world a lot differently than I did on September 10th. There was now a fear of the unknown, a fear of strangers and of people who are different than me. However, as the years went on I’ve come to the realization that while there may be evil in the world, not everyone is evil and we’re all humans with humanity. That humanity has led me to care for those who are less fortunate than I am. Those such as the refugees who are going through their own struggles and while I may think that my life may be rough at times, there are those who are going through a much more difficult time. I have a roof over my head, I have designer clothes in my closet and shoes on my feet. Food in abundance to eat and money to spend, and I take quite a lot for granted. However the one thing that these refugees have is HOPE. Hope “the conviction of things not seen” means that even though you haven’t seen the results, you believe with all your heart that things are going to get better. It’s also the one thing that has kept me going. Knowing that things are going to get better.

When, a few months ago the Syrian refugees started leaving their homeland, the first thing I thought about at the time was “how could they leave their home and go to a strange land?”. I couldn’t possibly imagine just picking up and leaving my home, but then I am not facing the situations that they are. I also knew that going to strange land where you know no-one and don’t speak the language couldn’t possibly be easy for them. They were going into an unknown, but, once again they had HOPE! They also had people who cared, people who reached out sending their own Letters of Hope to the Syrian children. Who were these people? They were once also refugees themselves giving them a glimmer of HOPE. Just take a look at the emotional video below.

I took a look at the video and the tears started flowing. How could I help? How can YOU help? Well thanks to CARE, they have reached over 2 million Syrians with humanitarian relief, from food baskets and grocery debit cards to emergency shelter and hygiene kits. You, too, can send a heartfelt message of hope and solidarity, no matter where you live. I was able to send my own letter giving them something to look forward to. Here’s an excerpt from my own letter.

“I can’t begin to imagine
what you’re going through. I don’t know what it is like to be displaced from my
own home and to be away from friends and family and everything that I love and
hold dear. However I want you to know that there are people who care about you.
People who are willing to give a helping hand to see that you make it through
your most difficult of times. I want you to keep the faith and remember that
you are loved.”

You can also make a donation. A donation of any amount will help, however a donation of $35 will help a family with a hygiene kit. $70 is an entire month’s worth of food, while giving a $114 food voucher will allow the family to purchase basic need items. You can also donate $300 to go towards agriculture and livestock support.

So I implore you to help out in any way that you can. Send that letter of hope, make that donation or share this story. Let them know that you care!
