Meet Melody Ellison – American Girl’s Newest BeForever Character

I have always been a fan of the American Girl brand of books and dolls. I grew up reading the books and when I had my own daughter who is now 19, I bought her the books and doll as well. We are a family of readers. When Madison was born she also received her very first doll (the Bitty Baby) for her very first Christmas and the tradition continued. Just this past Christmas we were able to visit American Girl and Madison had her own mini adventure there where she got her very first BeForever doll, Addy the only African American BeForever girl at this time. Well I have some exciting news for you. February is Black History Month and in honor of Black History Month and there is going to be a new BeForever character, Melody Ellison, an African American girl growing up during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Melody’s full product line will debut later this summer, but the first book in her series, No Ordinary Sound, is currently available.

American Girl was founded on the belief that creating dolls accompanied by fictional stories woven with historically accurate content would be a fun and engaging way to teach children about significant moments in American history. This belief is still true today! In No Ordinary Sound, readers are introduced to the characters who make up Melody’s world, the difficulties and racial inequalities of the civil rights movement, and the character-building moments that affect and inspire this young girl growing up in Detroit—where people were speaking out for freedom, and Motown was playing an important role in the racial integration of popular music. Melody’s hopeful nature and enthusiastic spirit are infectious, and her solid sense of fairness and her heart’s desire to make a difference will resonate with people of all ages.

I am super excited that Abby finally has a “sister” at American Girl, and this is an exciting moment for those in the African-American community who have been waiting for a very long time for a new doll in the series. Melody will be available in stores in the summer and I’m already thinking that she’ll make an amazing Christmas gift. I can’t wait to meet her but first I’ll be adding No Ordinary Sound to our ever expanding book collection.

Let’s discuss: Have you read any of the other American Girl books?
