Let Your Child’s Natural Smile Shine Through.

If there is one thing that my child hates most in the world is smiling. I’m not exactly sure where that came from because I remember her as a smiling bouncy baby. A baby who would giggle at everything. Then her first birthday came along and it was like pulling teeth to get her to smile. The closest she would come to a smile is a smirk. Or you know those smiles where she’s obviously saying “cheese”. We all know those smiles.

One thing that she does, however, love to do is brushing her teeth. I mean she could stay in the bathroom for hours brushing if you let her so we were super excited when we were asked to participate in the Orajel™ Kids Smilestones campaign. Besides toys, nothing makes her happier knowing that she could be in the bathroom brushing away. We have used Orajel Kids for as long as I can remember and it was the very first toothpaste I bought Madison when she started teething and I introduced a toothbrush. It was one of those that attached to my finger and gently massaged her tooth and gums.

For this campaign, we were sent a BabyOrajel™ Nighttime teething gel, Orajel™ Thomas & Friends™ Fluoride-Free Training Toothpaste and Orajel™ Bubble Guppies™ Brush and Fluoride Toothpaste. Since Madison isn’t teething I decided to put the teething gel away because you just never know. She still doesn’t have all of her teeth in and this may come in handy one day. She is currently in the training stage so we decided to use the training toothpaste.

The fact that is is fluoride-free was also a plus. While she loves brushing, she doesn’t always remember to spit and likes the taste of the toothpaste because according to her “it tastes good”. Our water also has fluoride and her dentist also indicated that fluoride toothpaste wasn’t necessary at her age.

I usually help out with the brushing of her teeth in the back because as a pre-schooler she still hasn’t grasped the concept of brushing all around and in the back, so I help out, but generally she likes doing it herself.

If you have kids of your own and you have a generally hard time getting them to brush their teeth here are a few tips you can use. Remember that the ideal time to brush is 2 minutes.

1.
Brush along with them. After all what better example is there than the one where you show your child that brushing is good for them.

2.
There are brushing apps that you can use for a countdown that plays a silly sound for 2 minutes. Let your kids know that when the song ends they’ve done a great job.

3.
Pretend that they’re brushing away monsters. Madison hates monsters so we tell her that there are monsters in her mouth and she needs to brush them away.

4.
Have them brush at the same time each and every day and introduce a reward chart. Stickers are fun rewards but you can use a treat once a week. If they brush without fussing they get a special treat at the end of the week.

5.
Always use toothpaste and soft toothbrushes designed for kids such as Orajel Kids Fluoride-Free Training Toothpaste or the Orajel Anti-Cavity Fluoride Toothpaste. You can let them choose their own toothbrush design. Kids love choices and this is one that you won’t mind them making.
