I Can Celebrate My Home Away From Home

I was born on the beautiful island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines but migrated to New York which became my second home. I got married, had a family and was even a member of the US Army. Those who have family members in the military know how much traveling military personnel does. We move from duty station to duty station every few years or as needed. As soon as the kids have settled and made friends, it’s time to uproot them again and move to a new duty station and the process starts all over again.

No matter where I move to though I would always consider my Caribbean island as home. With the holidays approaching I’ve been noticing that I’m getting more nostalgic and homesick. We would normally travel over the holidays to the Caribbean to spend it with my mother, or to Canada to spend it with my brother. There is something about being with family, or being “home” that brings us closer together during the holidays. My mother had a penchant for cooking, she would bake every Christmas and there would be other foods on the stove being cooked. I didn’t get her culinary skills but I do try.

My mother passed away 2 months ago and and there’s something about smells that just bring back certain memories such as the smell of freshly baked bread and cakes in the oven.  Smells that remind me of the home that I grew up in, the memories just come flooding back. The freshly laundered clothing being hung on the clothes line outside to air dry and their fresh sun smell once you get them. The smell of all the fresh fruits, especially mangoes that we would all snack on during the Christmas season. I’ve always said that there’s no place like home and Air Wick seems to think like I do. That’s why to celebrate its Life Scents Holiday Collection, Air Wick is launching its Give the Gift of Home campaign which includes a donation of $250,000 through a portion of its profits to benefit families in partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

Air Wick aims to give the “Gift of Home” to those who miss it most with a new candle collection which aims to invoke the sweet memories of home. Whether it’s the smell of cookies being baked in the oven or the scent of pine filling up the house from your Christmas tree that your family gets every year, you can find scents that will truly remind you of home. Scents like Spiced Apple Crumble, Snowflake Vanilla Cookie, Emerald Woodland and Berry Cool Winer. They are also available in an array of formats including plugin refills, Freshmatic® Auto Spray Refills as well as candle and wax melts in select fragrances, you’re sure to find something that strikes a chord no matter your home décor.

I have my candle in an “area of prominence,” as I like to call it. I placed mine on my entryway table, so it’s the first thing I smell as soon as I walk through the door. It also gives my home a smell that says “welcome home.” It’s truly my home away from home. They’ve even done a truly heartwarming video as a tribute to families all over the world, showing us how the power of scent can bring us all closer together. I took a look at the following video, and the tears started flowing because I could relate. I encourage you to take a look.

Even though I own my own home, I still call it my home away from home. I am in a state away from family and friends. There is truly no place like home and while I won’t be able to visit my homeland this year, I will at least have my children close by and I will be able to teleconference with other family for the holidays. I will also have my Air Wick candles to help me with those wonderful memories of home, to help me celebrate my home away from home.

Let’s discuss: What scents reminds you of your home?
