Trick-or-Treating Alternatives for a Rainy Halloween

What to do when it rains on Halloween

Can you believe that in just a few weeks, the kids will be dressed up in their costumes and will be going trick-or-treating? I’m going to be honest, I’m really not a big fan. One year I remember sending the kids off and just putting the bowl of candy on the front steps and not answering the door. Well, I did answer but got tired after about the 10th ring of having to stop the fantastic book I was reading to put a witch hat on just to answer the door.

Halloween however, is a fun time of the year for kids. Not only do they get to dress up in their favorite costumes, but they also get to walk around their neighborhood,  receiving free candy! What kid wouldn’t love this? I know mine actually looks forward to Halloween because it’s the one time of the year that our house actually has candy unless it’s someone’s birthday. Unfortunately for parents, Halloween is frequently rainy or cold. Although kids can bundle up when it’s cold, what can they do when it’s rainy? These trick-or-treating alternatives are perfect for that rainy Halloween.

Nursing Home Trick-or-Treat

If it’s raining during your community’s trick-or-treating time, you might want to call your local nursing home and see if they have any trick-or-treating events going on for the residents. Many nursing homes will have the residents pass out candy to children in the hallways, allowing the residents to experience the joy kids have when getting candy and having the kids around.

Costume Party

Instead of chancing the weather on Halloween, plan ahead and host a costume party at your house or a local business. You can invite your children’s friends, asking them to dress up in a costume of their choice. You can even have a candy scavenger hunt so that the kids still get their chocolate fix.

Mall-O-Ween

Most malls usually have a Halloween celebration for the kids where the retailers put out candy for trick-or-treaters. It’s an excellent way for kids to stock up on candy while parents check out the sales being offered in stores. However, not only will the kids be warm and cozy, but they’ll also be able to show off their costumes without having to be bundled up.

Scary Movie Date

If it’s a rainy Halloween, you can always choose to skip the trick-or-treating and go see a scary movie instead. Check your local theaters and see if there are any kid-appropriate scary movies playing. If there aren’t any movies playing, you can stay at home and watch scary movies right in the comfort of your living room instead. Make your living room creepy by hanging blankets over the window, making it dark and scary.
