Pinecone Hedgehogs Craft

Got pinecones and don’t know what to do with them? Learn how to create these super easy pinecone hedgehogs that your kids will enjoy making.

When I told you that we’ve been on a craft kick this week, I wasn’t joking. We picked up quite a few pinecones this weekend, and I was amazed at all the things that you can do with pinecones and all the animals that you can make. Pinecones come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and with the holidays quickly approaching, they can even be used as decorations to pass out to the neighbors.

This week, though, we decided to stick with pinecone animals, and Madison and I decided to make another very simple craft that even the littlest ones can do. We decided to make pinecone hedgehogs and pinecone turkeys and, while at it, to make it a learning experience once again. When you do crafts with the kids, don’t just make it about doing the craft; incorporate learning into play so that they learn while having fun.

Did you know that hedgehogs are not related to porcupines? While porcupines are related to rodents, hedgehogs are insectivores, meaning that they eat only or mainly insects. They are also nocturnal, meaning that they are up to something during the night, and when threatened, they will curl into a ball and show those prickly spines. It’s the way they deter predators. With pinecones also being prickly, it was a great way to show her what prickly means. Now I mentioned these are super easy to do, so without further ado, let’s get into it.

Here is what you’ll need:

Materials:

Pinecones

Felt

Googly Eyes

Pompoms

Scissors

Glue

Instructions:

Step 1: Cut felt into a triangle shape, but more of a rounded triangle.

Step 2: Add googly eyes to the felt

Step 3: Add the pom-pom representing the nose.

Step 4: Attach the felt with eyes and pom-poms to the pointy end of the pine cone.

Step 5: Lay your hedgehog flat on the ground instead of standing up.

Super easy, isn’t it?

Remember, when you’re doing crafts with your little ones, to make it a learning experience and one they’ll never forget.
