Madison Caribbean Adventures – Fort Charlotte – St.Vincent

I promised that I was going to continue my Caribbean Adventures and I didn’t forget about you. We took a mini break and now we are ready. On my recent trip to St. Vincent and the Grenadines I took a trip to the historic Fort Charlotte, named after Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III. There is so much history there and I want to share a bit of it with you along with some of the photos that mommy took. Fort Charlotte overlooks the capital of Kingstown and you can get there by either walking or taking a vehicle. If you are ever in St. Vincent I would suggest putting this place on your list of places to visit. If you are hesitant about visiting, here’s a little trivia for you. Did you know that Pirates of the Caribbean 1, 2 & 3 were filmed in St. Vincent and the Grenadines? Hello Jack Sparrow!

Fort Charlotte was constructed in 1806 when the British recovered the island from the French, and unlike most forts, it was not used to protect the island from naval attack but attacks from the French and the Caribs on the island itself. One surprising fact to note was the canons were all pointed inland. In those days there were reported to be about 30 canons at the fort.

Today you can still see quite a few of them but unfortunately most aren’t there. One of the highlights of visiting, besides getting to sit on a canon which I would never have been able to do in my lifetime, are the rooms. One room in particular has paintings depicting the history of the Black Caribs that were originally living on the island.

There were also some very cool artifacts that I have never seen before in my life either. For example I saw a pot that depicted the way they cooked back in those olden days.

Today Fort Charlotte houses the female prisoners on the island but they are away from the view of visitors. The view from Fort Charlotte is spectacular and I insist that you put it on your list of places to visit if you ever make it to St. Vincent. Here are a few more pictures that we took and want to share with you.

All in all my trip to St. Vincent and the Grenadines was a delight and I can’t wait to share the rest of my photos with you. To learn more about St. Vincent you can visit the tourism website at discoversvg.com.
