Madison Caribbean Adventures – The Windward Side of St. Vincent and the Grenadines

It has been a while since I shared a few more pictures of my Caribbean trip this past December. Today I want to share with you for an Almost Wordless Wednesday post the Windward Side of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. There are two sides to the island, the Windward and the Leeward side. The last time I visited I was able to see the Leeward side of the island, so on this last trip mommy decided to pay a visit to the Windward side. While both sides are beautiful, the Windward side is known for their white sand beaches and the further out you go, their very rough seas. The Leeward side is quite the opposite. The beaches are a lot calmer and they are known for their black sand beaches. You can have the best of both worlds in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

One of the highlight of visiting the Windward side of the island was getting to see the future international airport. St. Vincent and the Grenadines does not have an international airport so tourists visiting the island usually have to get a connecting flight on another island to get there. Usually it’s via Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago or even St. Lucia. While that can be great because you get to see another island, if you’re in an hurry to get to St. Vincent it can also be quite stressful, since at times you may need to overnight or wait a few hours for a connecting flight. We were told that the airport might be finished this year but it all remains to be seen, but I am totally keeping my fingers crossed.

After paying the airport a visit we decided to just ride along the Windward side (or the country side) as it’s called. These are some of the sights that I saw.  One of them being the Historic Byera Tunnel. This is a manmade tunnel and only one vehicle can enter at a times since there is not enough room for two. I also happened to take a picture of the village before the tunnel. One thing I loved about the houses in St. Vincent and the Grenadines are the colors. They are just so colorful and with the green lush background makes the backdrop even more beautiful.

We went as far on the Windward side of the island as much as we could, and in the end we stopped at the side of the road where a gentleman was selling coconuts and got a few to drink. Right from the coconut, the best way to go. Now enjoy the rest of my photos without interruption.

If you’re ever in St. Vincent and the Grenadines I would definitely recommend a day trip to the Windward side of the island. There aren’t as many hills to climb as on the Leeward side and the views are amazing.

I can’t wait to go back!
