ZumZum - The Coolest Balance Bike {Giveaway}

Tomorrow's my birthday and I finally turn 3! Time surely does fly doesn't it? I can't believe it myself. I have shared quite a lot of my adventures with you and a few of those has been learning to ride my bike. I remember the first balance bike I got. It was made totally of plastic but it did it's job. It helped me learn to balance. Since then I've done quite a few other balance bikes and all are unique in their own way. Today I want to share with you another. This one is one of the coolest balance bike I have seen to date. I bring to you ZumZum! There is no other like it and I've seen a lot, let me tell you. There is so much to this balance bike that I just have to share it with you. Before I do that though, let me tell you a bit of the history behind ZumZum.

When the team at ZumZum decided that they wanted to create the perfect bike in terms of design and flexibility, they looked for the best, someone who has been riding bikes all their life and know what to look for. They contacted Steve Peat, a professional mountain biker who has won many championships. After a lot of work ZumZum was created as the perfect starting bike for any child. Now they just need the help of everyone to get this project up and running.

Now balance bikes can be used any time your little one starts walking. Trust me, I got my first balance bike when I was only 13 months old. They are perfect for learning balance and coordination and for building up confidence. One of the things that I love about balance bikes is that you control how fast you go. With kids their first instinct is to put their foot on the ground if they're going to fast in order for them to stop. That's called our built in brake. It's what I still do even now. Now there are a few features that makes the ZumZum totally unique and also one of the coolest.

The ZumZum is made of Birch Plywood from wood grown in sustainable forests, making it not only a cool balance bike but also a green one! It's unique design also makes it one of the lightest balance bikes in the world.

The thing that totally caught my eyes though was the seat. I have never seen a bike (and I mean any bike, balance or regular) like it before. That's the natural suspension and my first thought was I'll be scared to sit on it because it might break. After reading up on it I found out that it is so well built that even adults can sit on it without fear of it breaking. That's how strong it is.

Here's a feature that I know is not found in most bike or at least not any balance bike that I know of. NFC tagging in the steering wheel. Now you can identify your child's bike with your smartphone. The steering wheel will contain a chip which will be able to tell you all the information about the owner and the warranty. How cool is that!

Another feature that I love was the non-marking pneumatic rubber tires. If it's one thing I hate on a balance bike, it's plastic tires. The people at ZumZum decided to up the ante with the real thing. Feel free to ride this bike indoors without leaving scuff marks on your hardwood floors. If indoors is too tame for you, don't worry, the ZumZum is perfect for all kind of terrain. Think gravel, sand and even mud. Now you can take your bike to the beach, something you possibly couldn't have done before.

Here's a video showing you a bit more about ZumZum that I can tell you.

To find about more about ZumZum and to help them reach their goal of $50,000 you can check out the ZumZum Kickstarter page or ZumZumBikes.com. The Kickstarter campaign ends on February 7 so there's not a lot of time left to get this amazing bike into your household.

The team at ZumZum wants one of you to experience what it's like to own of the world's coolest balance bike. One lucky reader will win their very own. To give everyone a chance to win, this is open to residents of the US, Canada, Europe and Australia.  Don't forget to check out their KickStarter page. Good Luck!

Keep Your Home Air Clean with Febreze Air Purifier {Giveaway}

I am not a big fan of winter. I actually detest winter and I have never been a fan of snow although I was born in winter. While other kids love being outdoors playing in the snow, making snow angels and having snowball fights, I would much prefer to stay indoors and drink some hot chocolate and wait for it all to melt. Another reason that I'm not such a fan is that in the winter it seems like my household air isn't as fresh as it should be. One reason could most certainly be that the windows are always always closed, usually to keep the cold out but it also keeps the fresh air out too. So I was ecstatic when Febreze contacted me about trying out one of their brand new Febreze Air Purifier, and the great news is that one of you get to try it out too.  We've also included some home cleaning tips by Julie Edelman of the Accidental housewife, to help you on your way to keeping your home air clean.

The Febreze Air Purifier provides customized, hands-free and stress-free cleaning and has a powerful HEPA-Type filter that traps up to 99% of airborne particles such as dust, pollen, pet dander and odors. All while leaving behind the fresh scent of Febreze for a whole room clean! Equipped with dual action HEPA- Type filters for odor and dust reduction, Febreze air purifiers trap up to 99% of airborne particles including dust, pet dander and other allergens while releasing the fresh scent of Febreze linen & sky or spring & renewal. With 3 air-cleaning levels and a freshness scent control dial, the Febreze Air Purifiers are customizable to your preference.

I did however notice that when turned on to it's highest setting that it was very loud. We turned it down to setting 1 which was so quiet that you could barely hear it, which makes it perfect for bedroom settings. It does come with a supplied Febreze linen & sky scent cartridge which is supposed to last up to 30 days. The scent isn't overpowering but since it's close to my bed we also turned that down.

Available in Tabletop, Mini Tower and Tower size models, they are perfect for dorm rooms, bedrooms, offices, living rooms or anywhere dust and/or odors make the space feel less than fresh and clean. They are also very compact and don't take up much room either.

So now here are Julie Edleman’s Cleaning Tips that we promised:

Move Over, Must: Your basement smells musty, but you don’t know what to do? The carpeted floor is most likely the culprit. Carpet fibers hang on to dust particles and moisture, which can make the basement smell musty. Sprinkle some corn starch or baby powder, let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes, then suck it up with your vacuum. You can also use a dehumidifier to reduce moisture in the air. HINT: To help capture those dust particles before they even have a chance to hit the carpet, keep a Febreze Air Purifier in your basement.

Ditch the Dust: No matter how neat and clean you try to be, dust has sneaky a way of collecting on surfaces throughout your home. Try the Febreze Air Purifier to help capture airborne particles before they settle, reducing the levels of airborne dust that can accumulate on furniture and counters.

When Your Wall Becomes A Work Of Art: For colored markers spray the wall with hairspray and immediately wipe before it can drip down or dry. For crayons, you can put a dab of toothpaste on a toothbrush and gently wipe it out, or rub with a dampened microfiber cloth and baking soda.

Embarrassing Pet Odors: We love our furry friends, but we’re not so fond of the embarrassing pet odor that they leave around the house—from kitty litter and pet mishaps to wet dog smell. Try using the Febreze Air Purifier to reduce odors and add a fresh, clean scent back into the air.

The  Febreze Air Purifier is available at Walmart, Sam’s Club, Amazon.com and other retailers. Models may vary.

Now this is the part that you've all been waiting for you. One of you will win this Febreze Tower Air Purifier. The same one that I got to try out and love. Not only will it keep your home air smelling fresh and clean but you'll wonder why didn't Febreze come out with this sooner. Giveaway is open to US Residents only and ends on February 6th. Good luck to all entering.

Which housecleaning tip is your favorite or do you have one of your own to share?

Cherry Pie Heart Pops - Valentine Day Treat

Love is in the air
Everywhere I look around
Love is in the air
Every sight and every sound
If you don't recognize these lyrics from John Paul Young then I suggest looking it up. It's a song that I think is perfect for Valentine's Day. Not only is love in the air in every sight and sound but also in the smells too. There's nothing like smelling some nice treats being made in the kitchen, especially when that treat turns to be heart-shaped. There are lots of heart shapes everywhere you turn and your food should not be an exception. Today I want to share with you our Cherry Pie Heart Pops made from scratch pie crust. It's not only a delicious treat but perfect for Valentine's Day.

Cherry Pie Heart Pops

Yields: 6

Time: 45 Minutes

Here is what you'll need:

Ingredients:

For pie crust:

1 1⁄4 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for rolling dough)

1⁄2 teaspoon salt

1⁄2 teaspoon sugar

8 tablespoons (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces

2 tablespoons of ice water

Additional ingredients and materials for pies:

2 tablespoons white sugar

1 large egg, with a splash of water

Cherry jam (or another filling of your choice)

Lollipop sticks (oven-safe)

Heart-shaped cookie cutter (found at Dollar Tree)

Cherry Pie Heart Pops

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cherry Pie Heart Pops

2. Make pie crust: In a food processor, pulse flour, salt, and sugar several times to combine. Add butter. Pulse until mixture resembles coarse meal. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons ice water. Pulse until dough is crumbly but holds together when squeezed with fingers (if needed, add up to 2 tablespoons more ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time).

Do not over process.

Cherry Pie Heart Pops

3. Roll out dough until it is smooth and even, roughly 1⁄4” thick.

Cherry Pie Heart Pops

4. Use heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out hearts. Recombine the scraps of dough and repeat until you have 12 hearts.

Cherry Pie Heart Pops

5. Spoon a bit of cherry jam or filling of your choice into the center of half of the hearts. Keep the border around the outside of the hearts clean.

Cherry Pie Heart Pops

6. Place a lollipop stick on each crust, pushing down with a bit of pressure so it sticks into the dough. Then, place plain dough hearts on top. Place heart pies onto a baking sheet.

Cherry Pie Heart Pops

7. Use a fork to pinch the edges of each pie together. Next, brush egg wash onto tops to allow them to get golden and crispy while baking.

Cherry Pie Heart Pops

8. Sprinkle a bit of white sugar on top. Bake for 20-30 minutes until golden brown.

Now serve and enjoy. You can even add a decorative bow to the lollipop sticks to make it look even more festive.

Kids and Exercise – Tips to Stay Healthy

As a parent, you want what’s best for your kids, especially when it comes to their health. The best way to keep your kids healthy is to encourage them to be active and move around. Although you wouldn’t want to send your toddler to the gym, there are many ways you can encourage your kids to exercise in a fun way that will keep them healthy.

Head Outside

If you want to keep your kids healthy and active, then turn off the TV and head outside! There are so many things for your kids to do outside, no matter what season it is. If it’s summer, your kids can exercise by going swimming or running through the sprinkler. If it’s the middle of winter, take them sledding or tubing. You’d be surprised at how much exercise your kids (and you!) get when you go up and down a sledding hill multiple times. By simply heading outside, you’re encouraging your kids to be active and healthy.

Play Games

Get your entire family involved and exercise by playing some games. If you want your kids to run around more, instead of putting them on a treadmill, start a game of tag. Everyone will soon be out of breath as the entire family runs away, trying to avoid the person who is “it.” The more active games you play, the healthier your kids will be as well.

Enroll Them in Sports

If your goal is for your kids to exercise on a regular basis, you might want to enroll them in sports. This gives them a competitive way to exercise surrounded by kids their own age. Your kids will work hard to keep up with their peers, hopefully outpacing them as train their bodies to endure more and more exercise and activity.

Go to the Park

Another great way to get your kids to exercise and stay healthy is to head to your local park. Although this might seem surprising, the park is a great place to exercise. Many parks have baseball fields and basketball courts for your kids to practice on. Even simple playgroup equipment can help your child exercise without knowing. Think about the upper body strength and coordination it takes to swing across the monkey bars!

By moving around and staying active, your kids are receiving the exercise they need to stay healthy through their growing years.

What are some ways you get your kids to exercise?

Madison Caribbean Adventures - Talent Behind the Walls

My Caribbean Adventures series continue and we are still highlighting my trip to the beautiful island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. If you've read the others in this series then you may know that I spent the last two weeks in December there. That means that I got to enjoy Christmas in the Caribbean. Lots of sunshine and of course a few raindrops here and there but nothing major. Today I want to share with you another tradition that is done in St. Vincent. It's called Talent Behind the Walls. Well if you're wondering what it's all about let me give you a brief rundown of what it is. Every year the prisoners at Her Majesty's Prison get to highlight their talents, whether it be poetry or singing. After all just because you're in prison doesn't mean that your life is over. It's also something the people of St. Vincent have come to look forward to every year. Entry is via donation to see them perform. One thing to note is that they are separated by bars and police protection so we are totally safe.

Cricket is My Game by Jason Cole

I did promise that today I was going to share not one but two books with you. While visiting the beautiful island of Barbados, on my last day there we also visited the airport souvenir shop. While I normally pick out toys and tees (btw I did get an amazing tee), mommy and I decided that I was going to get not one, but two amazing books. The first I reviewed for you earlier today and of course this one Cricket is My Game by Jason Cole. Luckily for both of us I was able to find this adorable book online at a Barbados website which I just shared with you. The book link will take you there if you're interested in getting a copy for yourself, although I'm not sure if they do ship internationally. Now back to our book. Cricket is a sport played by almost every West Indian child and mommy said that she even remembered playing the game when she was younger. My big brother Kyle spent an entire year in St. Vincent and the Grenadines when he was younger so he got to play too. I'm so jealous!

Learn to Give - A Child's Life in Barbados

While on my trip to Barbados I was able to pick up a few souvenirs before leaving the country at the airport. A few of those souvenirs just happened to be books. Being a fan of books I was really excited when mommy got not just one but two of them. One of the things you may have remembered me saying last week, if you read about my Caribbeand Adventure in Barbados, was that today I was going to highlight the books that mommy got for me. One of the books that I was got was "Learn to Give - A child's Life in Barbados" written by Pauline Arbab-Zadeh. Unfortunately for you my readers, the only way to get this book is to actually be in Barbados and buy a copy. One of the reason mommy got this book for me, was because all profits from the sale of the book will be donated to the "Because of Jenna" foundation, and will help children who cannot walk, see or hear on that beautiful island. I'm grateful that I can do all three so it's good to know that I'm helping out a good cause.

Easy Valentine Day Card for Toddlers

Madison is going to be 3 very soon. Right now at age 2 she is still considered a toddler but as soon as age 3 kicks in she'll be considered a pre-schooler. While she is too young to have an actual Valentine, that doesn't mean that the family can't be her Valentine. With that in mind we've started doing some quick and easy crafts together. It's something that I love doing with her because it not only gives me some one on one time with her but it also helps with her creativity and boosts her confidence. While I'm usually the one gluing and cutting, she loves to color and she does sometimes help with the gluing as well. With Valentines Day right around the corner I want to share with you a very easy to do Valentines Day card that takes just minutes to do. You won't believe how easy this is to do.

* Makes 3 Cards
* Craft time  approx 5 minutes

Here is what you'll need:

Supplies Needed:

Cardstock Paper in color of choice (we chose red for Valentines Day)
Wiggle Eyes
Round Paper Punch
Foam Heart Stickers
Colored Pencils or Markers in colors of choice
Scissors
Craft Glue

*most of these products can be found at your dollar store or Michaels

Step by Step Directions:

1. Fold your cardstock paper in half lengthwise.

2. Fold again from both ends until they meet in the middle then cut along the folds. This way you get to make 3 cards.

3. This step is optional but gives your card a more polished rounded look. Use your scissors to cut around the edges of your card.

4. Punch a hole on your cardstock paper with your hole puncher. Next trace the hole with a pencil or marker. This will be your guide to place your wiggle eye.

5. Attach your wiggle eye with glue in the circle that you drew and let it dry.

6. Now attach your foam heart sticker and write the word you next to it.

7. This is the final step and the most fun. Open your card and draw a funny face or character around your wiggle eye.

Your card is all done and ready for giving. I told you it was super easy to do. Now get your supplies and get your little ones involved in the Valentine Day card making. You'll both enjoy the experience.

Madison Caribbean Adventures - Christmas in St. Vincent

I was born on January 24th in the year 2012, that means that I have a birthday coming up and I'm going to be 3. While there are no plans for a big birthday celebration this year there will of course be cake. That being said I have celebrated every Christmas differently since the year of my birth. In 2012 I celebrated with my family in my home state of Colorado. 2013 I once again celebrated with family in Canada and in 2014 I celebrated Christmas on the beautiful island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. I can surely tell you that Christmas on the island is much different that Christmas in the US. I don't just mean the nice weather with no snow. I'm talking about the sights, the activities and of course the people.

The View from Grandma's house with a mango tree in the background
The Christmas celebration begins approximately 9 days before the 25th of December with a celebration that they like to call Nine Mornings. Nine Mornings are held in different parts of the country and it's a celebration of food and music. Now there's a reason why it's called Nine Mornings. Nine meaning that it starts officially 9 days before Christmas Day and Mornings because it starts as early as 4am. Yes they get out of their beds and make it into the city or wherever it is being celebrated. Consider it one big party.

Mango Tree. Can you see the mangoes?
Mommy and I decided to take a trip into the city to get a few necessities on our second day in St. Vincent and it was a sight to behold. Lots of local fruits, although my grandma had a few of them right there in her very own backyard. I even got to enjoy my first coconut direct from the coconut instead of out of a can.

Now the way that you take transportation in the Caribbean is a lot different than you do in the US. There is no mass transit like the buses and trains. There are however minivans going to different parts of the country. You simply stand at the side of the road where the designated bus stops are and wait until one goes by.

They are usually pretty regular and the fare is different as well. Where my grandma lives it costs us $1.50EC which is less than $1US to get into the capital of Kingstown where the stores and supermarkets are.

The city was busy with people running around doing their shopping to get ready for Christmas. There was even live entertainment to be found in the city. Mommy decided to stop for a few minutes to take in the sound.

Before we left the city I got to see a police officer not only in uniform but directing traffic. While I occasionally see police officers in Colorado, they never ever direct traffic so it was something new for me.

Christmas in St. Vincent and the Grenadines surely is different and one that I would love to do all over again. The sights, the sounds and the people are just too beautiful.

Here's something to think about. The New York Times has listed St. Vincent and the Grenadines as one of the top 52 places to visit in 2015. They are actually number 12 on that list. So how about paying them a visit. I did and I loved it and I know you will too.

So how was your Christmas and do you spend it outside of the US?

How to Keep Your Family Healthy During the Cold/Flu Season

It's the cold and flu season and with the kids back in school there are the runny noses, sneezing, and it seems that when one child gets sick the entire household get sick soon after. We recently got the chance to interview a pediatric expert on ways to keep your family healthy during the cold and flu season. Dr. Tanya Altmann is an LA-based pediatrician and Associate Medical Editor of the American Academy of Pediatric’s Caring For Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5. She is also the spokesperson for Braun Thermometers and today one lucky reader will get the chance to win the brand new Braun No touch + forehead thermometer.

What's the difference between a cold and the flu?

Patients often come into the office saying they have the flu when really they just have a cold. The symptoms between a cold and flu are different and it’s important to recognize them so you can treat your illness effectively. The flu is much more severe than a cold and it tends to come on more quickly.  Cold symptoms are sore throat, runny nose, congestion, and sneezing and coughing, while the flu usually produces high fever, chills, headaches, body aches and severe fatigue. If you think you or your child has the flu, call your pediatrician.

What tips do you have to prevent either from occurring?

I swear by some tried and true methods of prevention during cold & flu season. One that tops the list is washing hands. Parents should have their kids wash their hands every time they enter or leave the house and before any meal. Germs are everywhere and children will touch anything. Secondly, make sure everyone is getting enough sleep and eating a healthy diet to help keep their immune system strong.

Is it possible to have them both at the same time?

It’s possible to have two illnesses at the same time, especially during cold and flu season where many viruses are circulating. If your child has an illness with a fever, seems to get better and then the fever reoccurs, it’s important to let your pediatrician know. While it may just be that your child caught two different illnesses back to back, it could also be a sign that your child caught a secondary bacterial infection such as pneumonia after having a cold or the flu.

In the event that a family member has either one, what are the ways to prevent it from spreading?

Keeping your home germ free during cold & flu season may sound time consuming. However, there are certain places were germs typically linger that you’ll want to disinfect more regularly. Door knobs, sink handles, light switches and phones are all constantly touched places in your home where germs can be easily spread. Keep a box of disinfecting wipes on your kitchen counter (out of reach of young hands) so you’ll be reminded to clean these areas.

One prevention measure you may not have thought of is maintaining humidity levels in your home. Recent studies have shown that keeping humidity levels between 40 and 60% can reduce the survival of the virus on surfaces and in the air. While humidity levels drop when cold temperatures set in, using a humidifier can help increase the relative humidity, and relieve coughs and congestion at the same time!

What essentials should you have in your medicine cabinet?

Sometimes I’ll have parents tell me they prefer to have their child’s temperature taken in the office because they think our tools are more accurate. However, the new Braun No touch + forehead thermometer takes fast, accurate readings at home by holding the thermometer two inches from the child’s forehead. No touch thermometers measure energy radiated from the forehead above the temporal artery, a major artery of the head. The Braun No touch + forehead thermometer captures twice as much of this energy to ensure you’re getting an accurate reading. Plus, you can also use the traditional touch option on the thermometer to double check your reading if you’re having doubts. I recommend it for parents who are looking to switch to a no touch thermometer but still have some reservations. It’s the easiest way to keep temperature taking as hygienic as possible.

Another essential to have on hand during cold and flu season is a fever reducing medication, such as acetaminophen. Make sure you know the appropriate dose for your child and store the medication up high, out of a child’s reach.

How effective are natural remedies such as Vitamin C for prevention?

Eating a diet full of Vitamin C is important, especially during cold and flu season. It’s always best to get your vitamins through healthy foods such as oranges and Clementine’s – which kids love! Vitamin D has also been shown to help keep the immune system strong and milk and other dairy products are the best source of Vitamin D for kids. In addition, research shows that kids who take daily probiotics have less fever illnesses during winter. If you are considering giving your child a supplement or vitamin, always check with your pediatrician first.

What signs and symptoms should I look out for and when should you consider consulting a doctor?

During cold & flu season, we receive lots of calls from parents who are trying to decide if their child has come down with an illness.  My first question is always how is their child acting?  Behavior is often the best indicator of whether a child needs to be seen right away.

Fever is another important symptom and also often one of the first signs of the flu. When your child has a fever they are often the most contagious. That’s why it’s important to have a reliable thermometer at home like the Braun No touch + forehead thermometer. When it comes to fevers, I’m often more concerned with the length of the fever than how high the number is. I recommend parents take their child to the pediatrician if a fever lasts more than 3-4 days, if the child looks very ill, is unusually lethargic, or has severe aches and pain as it could be a sign of something more serious than a common cold. This excludes newborns and infants; you should always consult your doctor immediately (or seek medical attention right away) when dealing with a newborn or infant with a fever.

Personally I like keeping my kids home when they aren't feeling well, but should you keep your children home when they have a cold or the flu?

When it comes to a cold or the flu, I typically advise parents that if your child is feeling better and their fever has been gone for at least 24 hours, they’re okay to be around other children. While you want to make sure they stay home from school when they’re sick, there’s no need to keep them home for longer than necessary—especially since they will hold on to some symptoms, such as a little cough or runny nose, for days or even a week.

Now that you've gotten some tips on how to keep your family healthy and understanding the difference between the cold and the flu, and also learning what to do if a family member ever has one of them, it's time for our giveaway. The new Braun No touch + forehead thermometer is the latest product to have in your family’s cold & flu arsenal. It offers two non-invasive ways to take a temperature reading, making it easier than ever before without sacrificing accuracy. One mode requires no contact, which means you can hold the thermometer up to 2 inches from the forehead to take a reading. The other requires gentle contact to the forehead in the same location. Either way, you get an accurate in less than two seconds!

So what do you do when you have the cold or the flu?
