Homemade Corn Beef Hash

There used to be a time when I thought of Corned Beef Hash as the salty, diced up meat and potato combination that comes from a can. This homemade variation on corned beef hash is much healthier and is easy to make but best of all it has amazing flavor! It’s a family favorite for breakfast at our house.

Keeping Your Kids Reading Over Christmas Break

Things to do Over Christmas Break

Can you believe that the holidays are right around the corner? That means you get to look forward to having the kids at home for a few weeks. Although it’s nice to spend the holidays with family, having the kids at home all day long for two straight weeks can be tiresome, not just for you but also the kids as well. To help keep everyone in the family happy and getting along, you need to find creative ways to keep your kids active and engaged. The busier they are, the less time they’ll have to argue and get into fights with their siblings! That's why I've put together a list of things that you can do over the Christmas break.

Sleepovers

One of the best ways to keep your kids busy this Christmas break is to set up some sleepovers. You can let your kids invite a few friends over to spend the nights. Your kids will be so busy playing with their friends that they’ll forget to fight with siblings. You can also let your children go over to their friend’s house so that you can have a night with your home all to yourself!

Craft Time

Another great way to keep your kids busy this Christmas break is to give their hands something to do. To do this, set up a daily craft time that all of your kids can participate in. The craft could be something as simple as gluing macaroni noodles to paper and painting them. You can also set up complicated crafts that will take days to complete. By giving your kids crafts to do with their hands, you’ll keep them from being bored and acting out as a result.

Play Outside

Don’t forget to send your kids outside this Christmas break! Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean that they can’t play outside. Simply bundle them up in all of their snow gear, including snow pants, boots, coats, scarves, gloves, and hats. If they’re unsure about what to do outside, encourage them to play in the snow. They can build snowmen, make snow angels, and even “paint” the snow with squirt bottles full of colored water. The more they have to do outside, the busier they’ll stay!

Trip to Grandma’s

Kids love to visit Grandma, so to help keep your kids busy and happy, plan a trip. Whether their grandma lives a street over or a state away, you can set up a trip so that your kids can stay for a few days. Your kids will get to have fun away from home, while you get some peace and quiet. It’ll be a win-win for everyone involved!

Keeping your kids busy over Christmas break isn’t too hard. Simply fill their days with different activities and play dates so that they’re too busy to get in trouble.

What are some ways you keep your kids busy over Christmas?

Cheesy Crockpot Hashbrowns

Breakfast which is considered the most important meal of the day can also be the most boring meal of the day. Breakfast can truly be super boring at times in our household. We get tired of eating the same old boring foods so sometimes we like to mix up and make it different, instead of the boring eggs and bacon and even more boring hashbrowns, we decided to make our cheesy hashbrowns all in our convenient crockpot. If you're looking for something different for breakfast then look no further than our Cheesy Crockpot Hasbrowns. This however isn't quick but it is super easy and you won't regret making it. Not only is it super delicious but I just know that you'll want to make it over and over again.

Give a Little Extra to Those in Your Lives - #ExtraGumMoments

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone.
#ExtraGumMoments #CollectiveBias

Madison mommy here. Today I wanted to do something a bit different. If you are new to reading my blog you may not know this, but my regular readers do. We are an active duty military family. What that means is that we're always on the move from one duty station to another. All these moves have moved us away from family and friends. That means that wherever we go we always have to make new friends. While that hasn't been too difficult for the kids, I'm not too social. I'm more of an introvert and like being by myself if possible. While hubby is outgoing and is always on the move with friends, I would much prefer to stay indoors curled up with a good book. Today I want to share with you a very special person that I met when I first moved to our current state. She is my next door neighbor and has been such a help. Today I share and give a little extra love to her.

Pamper your Piggies with Piggy Paint - #PamperedPiggies

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone.
#PamperedPiggies #CollectiveBias

As most little girls I love dressing up and looking nice. I have a big sister who gets all gussied up and I want to be just like her. You may have noticed that on a few occasion I may have gotten my little piggies all nice and cute. Whenever my big sister gets her feet done she always does mine as well. I'm not sure if you remember this, but I did a review for Piggy Paint over a year ago. I was just a little over a year old at the time and even then I knew what it was like to be fabulous! Mommy at the time wanted something that was safe for me. She didn't want to use the harsh polishes that the grown ups used so she searched high and low looking for something that was kid friendly and safe for me. That's when she found Piggy Paint.

Christmas Traditions That Doesn't Involve Money

Christmas Traditions That Doesn't Involve Money

Tis the season for spending money! Or so it seems! Every time you turn around there is another opportunity to write a check, buy another present or spend another dollar. Many of the standard Christmas traditions require a trip to the grocery or store to spend even more money. Sometimes it seems like you aren't even a good parent if you don't buy the right things to help your kids celebrate the holidays and traditions. But I've got 3 ideas for Christmas traditions that doesn't involve money!

Christmas Traditions That Doesn't Involve Money

Skip the Mall Picture with Santa

If you go to the mall to get the picture with Santa, be prepared to spend some serious money. Sure, the background is professional and the elves create a festive event, but there are ways to get a picture with Santa for free. Be watching for the local fire station, church event or school program where they have a Santa in attendance. If you know a friend with a Santa costume, arrange to have a personal visit to your house, then pay the Santa in cookies or homemade goodies. Many Walmart stores will have a free day where you can go get a picture with Santa for FREE.

Go Christmas Caroling

Going Christmas caroling used to be a standard event in most communities. Maybe this is the year to bring back this free tradition. Whether you go with your family, kids or a group of friends, you can make some holiday memories and spread some good cheer by singing some of the classic Christmas carols. If it's rainy or too cold to be outside, then call up your local nursing home or retirement center and get permission to carol through the halls. The residents will be thrilled and you will be making a difference in the lives of those who can't get out and enjoy the festive holidays.

Work on a Puzzle

On the long, winter nights when it gets dark early and it's too cold to be outside, why not bring out a puzzle? Kids of all ages can enjoy working the puzzles, helping find the same colors or look for the edge pieces. Pop a bag of popcorn, turn on some Christmas music and enjoy an old fashioned, free, holiday tradition.

We're Traveling to St. Vincent and the Grenadines

We're on the road, or maybe I should say on a plane today. We got a Red Cross message about my grandma and so this is an emergency visit. Where are we going? We're heading to the Caribbean to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. While it will be great to get out of the cold and enjoy some well needed sunshine, it won't be under the ideal circumstances that we would have wished for.

We will be spending an entire day in Barbados going and upon our return an entire day in St. Lucia. Seems like we're touring the Caribbean doesn't it? I'll try and update with pics of our visit while we're traveling if internet connection is available. If not then I will upon my return. I do have a few posts scheduled for you but our reviews will have to wait so we can properly review them upon our return.

In the meantime I want to wish you all a Happy Holidays and a very Happy New Year!

Holiday Votive Light Character Ornaments

Light your tree up this holiday season when you give these holiday votive light character ornaments a try. With a simple battery operated votive light and a few crafting supplies, you can create these kitschy and colorful character ornaments perfect for adorning your tree. Take a peek below at how you can get started crafting your own light up snowman as well as a light up reindeer.

First, let’s look at how to craft the snowman.

Snowman Ornament:

Here is what you will need:

1 battery operated votive
Black craft foam, craft fabric, or construction paper
Pair of googly eyes
Black marker
Red craft ribbon
Scissors
Hot glue, glue gun

We found everything we used here at our local dollar store. You can find a nice assortment of battery operated votives in various colors and styles perfect for this project.

Directions:

1. Begin by attaching the pair of googly eyes. Just add dab of glue and press into place above the faux flame.

2. Now, cut out the hat for your snowman. We just freehanded a black hat out of some black scrap fabric. Add a generous dab of glue and press the hat into place.

3. Finish the face of the snowman by dabbing on a few dots with a black marker.

4. Cut a small length of ribbon that can be used as a tie. Fold the length, add a dab of glue, and press the bow into place.

5. Take a length of red ribbon and tie it into a loop. Press it to the back of the votive along with some glue. Hold it in place until dry.

Your ornament is now ready to be hung. Simply turn your votive on so the nose of your snowman lights up. Hang it on your tree or anywhere you need some holiday glow.

Now, let’s talk about making the reindeer ornament.

Reindeer Ornament:

Here is what you will need:

1 battery operated votive
Brown pipe cleaners
Pair of googly eyes
Black marker
Red craft ribbon
Scissors
Hot glue, glue gun

Directions:

1. Begin by attaching the pair of googly eyes. Just add dab of glue and press into place above the faux flame.

2. Now, cut the pipe cleaners for your antlers. Cut two lengths that you then tie onto one straight length. Add small bits to create the antler look. You are sort of creating a “headband” that will then get glued onto the votive. Add a generous dab of glue and press the finished antlers into place.

3. Finish the face of the reindeer by dabbing on smile with a black marker.

See how fun and easy it can be to create holiday themed character ornaments with just a few craft supplies and votives? Give these easy ornaments a try and let your tree light up this holiday season!

Holiday Baking Made Easy with Nestle Tollhouse

My mom always tells me this time of year reminds her of her mom’s house and how it always smelled sweet with fresh baked cookies and treats. She and her mom spent days baking for the holidays and she has wonderful memories of enjoying those treats with family and friends.

Now that I’m getting older, baking cookies and other treats has become an important part of our holiday traditions too! The problem is that we’re so busy all of the time that it is hard to do as many homemade cookies and treats. This year though, mom bought Nestle Tollhouse Refrigerated Rolled and Ready Sugar Cookie Dough. This means that baking cookies doesn’t take as much time so we can spend more time together decorating the cookies. That’s my favorite part!

You are Going to Love Our Generation Dolls and Accessories

How many of you love Target as much as mommy and I do? Mommy can never resist going in there to buy "just one thing" and coming out with bags full of stuff that she didn't go to buy. It doesn't help that I am usually with her and most of the items belong to me. Do you remember this post? Within Eye Level It's Mine? Well Target has one of the best toy section that I have seen to date and almost everything that I want is always within eye level. It's like they have them there just for me. One of the section that always hold my attention is the Our Generation dolls and accessories section. I can remember the very first time I made my way to that section in the toy department. I was hooked and it took mommy quite some time to get me away. She usually bribes me with fruit snacks, since it's the one treat that she allows me to get that is close to candy, I always fall for it. That doesn't mean that I forget about the Our Generation department, not at all, it's still one of the first things I go for whenever we next visit Target.

Fine Motor Fun: Holiday Writing Tray

So one of the things that kids love is playing in the sandbox during the summer. If you are looking for some fun and frugal ways to encourage fine motor skills, then this holiday writing tray is the perfect solution. You can make your own holiday writing tray for your child to practice their letters and numbers on with just a quick visit to your local dollar store. Take a peek below at how you can create your own in minutes!

Supplies needed for this activity:

Cookie sheet or baking sheet
Red or green craft sand
Candy cane

We found all three of these supplies at our local dollar store. We only needed one bag of colored sand to fit the medium-sized tray. It doesn’t matter what candy canes you use since you won’t be eating them. Just pick ones that have color that appeals to you.

Directions:

1. Begin by pouring the sand onto the tray. Smooth it out with your hands. The nice thing about the cookie tray/sheet is that it has a lip, so there are no worries about sand falling over the edges.

2. Give the child a wrapped candy cane. This will act as their writing tool.

3. Using the candy cane, trace numbers, letters, and shapes into the sand. Talk with your child about what they are writing and the shapes they are making. You can even give them words or shapes to copy.

4. When your child is ready to start over, simply use your hand to clear the sheet and pat the sand back into place. When it is a thin and even layer, it is ready to be used again.

When learning time is over, you can place plastic wrap or tinfoil directly over the tray to protect the sand. Or, you can even pour the contents into a plastic sandwich bag for storage. Ready to play again? Just lay the sand back out on the tray.

See how easy it can be to not only make but enjoy your holiday writing tray? This is a fun, frugal, and hands-on activity that children are sure to love.

Evenflo World Explorer Triple Fun Plus ExerSaucer #ExerSaucerExplorer

It's not very often I get a product that I personally cannot use. When that happens I however do have a very good friend who can do my review for me. When I was younger I loved being able to walk around the room. I actually started walking at 9 months old. However since we have stairs mommy decided that having one of those walkers was not safe. So what she did was get me an ExerSaucer from Evenflo. They are a lot safer than walkers and the one I received allowed me to move around and play with the toys that were infront of me. Well Evenflo has updated their ExerSaucer with the World Explorer Triple Fun Plus currently available only at Babies R’ Us.

My big brother Kyle is growing up. I can't believe that he's a teenager already and one that is getting almost as tall as daddy. Legend of the Poinsettia Book & Craft: Poinsettia Ornament

It's Toddler Book Talk Tuesday day and today I have a special surprise for you. While I love sharing about the books I'm reading, today I want to also do a craft and incorporate it together just for you. Today's book is The Legend of the Poinsettia retold and illustrated by Tomie dePaola. The Legend of the Poinsettia is a wonderful children’s book that tells the story of how the poinsettia came to be a symbol of the holiday season. The bright illustrations and sweet storytelling make this a wonderful book to enjoy with your child this holiday season.

In Mexico, the poinsettia is called flor de la Nochebuenao flower of the Holy Night. At Christmastime, the flower blooms and flourishes, the quite exquisite red stars lighting up the countryside. This Mexican legend tells how the poinsettia came to be, through a little girl's unselfish gift to the Christ Child.

Lucida the heroine in the story is a young girl who lives with her parents and her siblings in Mexico. Lucida's mother was asked to make a special blanket for the Baby Jesus figure in the procession since the one they had was very old and worn. When Lucida's mother became ill, Lucida decided to try and finish the blanket on her own but it became so tangled that it was ruined. Lucida was sad that her family no longer had a gift to give until an old woman appeared to her and told her everything would be ok. She also told her that whatever she gave would be ok because it was given with love. Lucida then proceeded to take some weeds that she picked that bloomed into the lovely poinsettias that we all know and love today.

This story teaches that no matter what we give, as long as we give it with love, it's all that matters. Humility is also taught in this lovely story along with the act of courage and love all around. This is one book that we would recommend. We loved the folklore and the illustrations were bright and beautiful. Here's another book that totally gets our TWO TINY THUMBS UP!

Now let's look at this really cute poinsettia ornament that you can make after you've enjoyed reading your own book.

With just a few materials, you can make a poinsettia ornament perfect for adorning your tree. Here is how to get started.

Supplies needed:

Clear ornament
Silk poinsettia
White or silver glitter
Ribbon for hanging
Scissors

You can find all of the supplies you need here at both your local dollar store or craft store. Look for plastic ornaments that are shatterproof since this is a craft you will be doing with children. You can choose any color of poinsettias you wish, as you will find them in white, red, and pink.

Directions:

1. Begin by removing the top of the ornament. Sprinkle in a teaspoon or so of glitter and give it a good shake to spread it around.

2. Take a stem of poinsettias and remove the blooms. You can just snip the tops off with scissors. You can also snip a few leaves off if you wish.

3. Now, take the blooms and tuck them into clear ornament. You can use a pencil to press them in and adjust them into position. Add some greenery using the same method.

4. How full you want the ornament to be is up to you. You can add several smaller blooms or one large one.

5. Cut a length of ribbon and tie it to the ornament for hanging.

Your poinsettia ornament is now ready to be displayed. Each time you look at it, you will be reminded of The Legend of the Poinsettia!
