Almost Wordless Wednesday: Trip to the Doctor

It's that time of the week again! That time when we do an almost Wordless Wednesday. I can't help but talk so it would never be a Wordless Wednesday. At least not on Growing Up Madison. This week we're going to talk about Doctor's Visits. You know the ones where you go and they give you a lolly because they gave you a shot.

Yeah the mean doctor's office!

Piggy Paint Review

Disclaimer: I was given the products in this post for the purpose of a review. I was not paid in any way to write this review. All opinions are my own.

I like to think of myself as a girly girl at times, at least the times when I'm not fighting with my brothers. Those times I think of myself the total tomboy. Well, when I'm not a tomboy I like wearing sandals and skirts and dresses and I love it when mommy and my big sister get their toes done. I've been wanting to get my toes done as well but the polishes mommy and big sis use aren't the best for me so one-day mommy decided to check around looking for little ones like me and guess what? She found this. Piggy Paints.

I love that it stated that it was natural like mud. Now, who doesn't like natural? I know I do! Mommy is into the natural and organics stuff for me for my inside so why not for my outside as well.

Mommy and I decided why not do my toes and guess what I got to choose my own color. There were was quite a variety but I finally decided on a very light pink. The instructions state that I needed to apply 2-3 coats but you know what mommy only used 1 and it came out looking really good and we didn't use the blow dryer as they suggested either and it dried pretty quickly with a really nice finish.

I was rather skeptical about the low odor because what nail polish doesn't have an odor? You know what? They were right! There was very little odor, I could barely smell it so it didn't bother me at all.

Do you see how pretty my toes look and yes that is only one coat? You really don't need 2 and I've had it on for about a week now. It does not wash off with water but Piggy Pain offers an eco-friendly, low odor nail polish remover as well. All made in the USA!

So if you're looking for an all natural, non-toxic, water-based, low odor and hypoallergenic polish for your little one's piggies don't look any further. With so many colors to choose from you will surely find a color you love. Trust Piggy Paint with your little one's piggies. And not just your little one, it can be used on the grownup piggies as well.

You can connect with Piggy Paint via their Website, Facebook,  Pinterest or Twitter page.

Knot Genie Review

Disclaimer: I was given the products in this post for the purpose of a review. I was not paid in any way to write this review. All opinions are my own.

Do you have hair that gets tangled very easily? What about hair that you hate washing because you don't want to deal the struggle of detangling all those knots? Well we have a product for you.

Introducing the Knot Genie!

OK, I admit I was a little skeptical at first and thought "hey this wouldn't work on my hair" but I was in for a shock. If you're new to the site let me explain why. I'm Caribbean-American as I like to call myself and I have very thick kinky hair. Well actually my hair seems to have a lot of different textures but it is generally thick.

I have VERY thick hair!
When searching for hair care products and a new brush mommy came across the Knot Genie website. We read the claim but mommy and I noticed that there were no children that looked like me on the website or in the video so mommy decided why not contact Knot Genie and ask if they would kindly send us a brush so we could check it out for ourselves. Well they said "sure! We'd love to" and in the mail came my very own Knot Genie brush.

Hey Mom, this doesn't hurt at all!
I can use this myself!
Can I say SURPRISE! Normally after mommy washes my hair, my hair would get tangled in knots. Mommy gently takes her time to get the knots out but it is very time-consuming because of how much hair I have. Well, the Knot Genie basically cut mommy's work in half. How it did it was magic indeed. Do you see the brush? Notice the bristles are all different lengths? Well, that is the trick!

"It all has to do with the different lengths of teeth on the brush. When brushing, they bend just right, to gently untangle hair. And because of this lack of stress, the hair's cuticles stays unharmed... revealing the smoothest, shiniest hair you've ever seen."

We got the Original Knot Genie but there is also a Teeny Genie as well which is a little smaller than the Knot Genie but does the same work.

So you're probably saying, she's probably just saying that because she got it for free! Well, Knot Genie isn't paying us to do this review so we can say anything we want to but if a product works I'm going to tell you that it works.

See that chunk of hair at the front that is all clumped together?
After using Knot Genie you can see the difference?
Was there anything that we didn't particularly like? Well, guess what? There was! I have a lot of hair on the side of my head that seems like it doesn't want to grow. Because the Knot Genie's teeth are not the same length it doesn't brush them down smoothly like a regular brush would. Besides that minor detail, this brush works like a charm. I would have preferred to only have one brush instead of two but hey I'm not complaining because there are no more ouchies for me.

The hair on the side doesn't stay down but hey the brush works!

You can connect with Knot Genie via their Website, Facebook,  Pinterest or Twitter page.

Throwback Thursday: First 24hrs What to Expect

ok so you've read the title and you're wondering. First 24hrs what to expect? What do you mean and what is the First 24hrs? Is that the TV show? For my readers who visit quite often you know what my Throwback Thursday is all about.

For those new readers who have somehow just happened upon my page whether by Facebook, Twitter or by google search, let me explain. Throwback Thursday is the day I post a random photo of myself and tell you a little about me.

Without further ado...

Yesterday was my 18th month birthday and I want to share a very special with you. This photo have only been seen by mommy, daddy and my siblings. I was only a few minutes old in the picture and not very pretty at all. Well not as I am now.

So what can you expect in those first 24hrs hours after birth? Not that picture perfect baby that you see on TV that's for sure. The one that is all clean and nice. Remember that movie Coneheads? Yeah your baby's head may look like that if you've had a vaginal delivery.

Before you even get to hold your little one the doctors have to be sure that your baby is ok. First the doctor will suction out your little one's mouth and nose to clear out any mucus and amniotic fluid to ensure that your baby can breathe on her own and then you should hear your very first cry. Mine was very loud!

They will then cut your little one's umbilical cord or your partner can do it. Most parents would want to hold their baby at this point. Mommy because she was under anesthesia didn't get to hold me until hours after delivery.

Next the doctor will perform and Apgar test which measures your baby's heart rate, reflexes, skin color, activity and muscle tone and breathing at 1 and five minutes after delivery. The score is based on a scale of 1-10 and any score above 7 is considered generally healthy. Don't worry if your baby tests at a low score, most babies who get a low score at birth go on to be very happy, healthy babies.

Your baby will then be weighed and measured. I weighed in on the lower end of the spectrum at only 6lbs 14oz, 18 inches long and was the smallest of all my siblings. Your baby footprints will also be taken for their medical records and will get their very first bracelet. Ok it's only and I.D. bracelet but it's still a bracelet right? Daddy and Mommy also get one that matches as well. My bracelet came with an alarm so no one could steal me.

Your baby will also get an antibiotic eye ointment to prevent eye infections that can happen from passing through the birth canal. My delivery was by c-section and I still got it. Noticed my shiny eyes? Your baby also get a Vitamin K shot to prevent clotting problems.

As long as your baby is doing well you may be able to spend some time with your baby before they are taken to the nursery where they will be thoroughly cleaned and evaluated once again. If your baby was born severely pre-mature they will be taken to the NICU where they will be monitored and taken care of there.

You'll then be moved to a recovery room or your own regular room. You can begin breastfeeding as soon as you get your baby back or if you prefer to formula feed you can do that as well but baby may prefer to sleep. We recommend getting as much sleep as you can while baby is sleeping. Guess what? Mommy wishes I was still that newborn who loves to sleep because now I hate naps.

You'll be filled with all kinds of emotions and if you think it's too overwhelming talk to someone. You'll be a stronger person for talking about it than keeping it bottled up inside. This is a very special day so have your camera ready as well and take as much pictures as you can. After all this day only comes once in a lifetime for your baby and you.

July 2013 Bluum Toddler Box Review

It's that time once again to review another Bluum Box. Guess what?! It's my 18 month birthday today and I got the 18 month box. This one was a little slow in the delivery which is why our review is up a little bit later than it was last month. If you don't remember what last month's box look like, take a quick look here.

Bluum is a monthly subscription service for babies ages newborn to 3 years of age and costs $24.95 a month.

Last month was all about Fine Dining and the theme for this month was Lil Artiste  and we were super excited to see what that included. I think I'm a lil artiste already. So far my work of art has included drawing on the walls of my house and on anything that I can draw on. I think they're beautiful but mommy doesn't really think so all the time.

My card read this month:
Month 18: Coloring
Your baby is scribbling away. An artist is born! Your baby is developing the hand skills necessary for grasping writing tools, like crayons and markers (washable, please!) By scribbling, your baby explores what they can do with these tools and paper, and tries to imitate what they see older children and parents do.
Stimulating children's minds through fun and engaging activities is the first step in unlocking their creative potential.
Creativity is contagious. Pass it on. ~ Albert Einstein

Now to move along to what came in my box.

Alex Jr. Tots First Crayons- $5.95

These state for children ages 18m+ and guess what? I like the chunkiness of the crayons. They're not skinny like ordinary crayons so my little hands should be able to grip them very easily. It comes with six very beautiful colors that I'm sure I can make a masterpiece with. I've never used Alex Toys before and I'm super excited to try them out!

Alex Toys My Scribble Pad - $1.95

We also got another Alex Toys but this time the scribble pad and this goes hand in had with my crayons. This is for ages 3yrs+ but since it's only paper younger ones can use it as well. There are 30 sheets. Although I thought the Alex Toys My First Scribbler would have been more appropriate for me I guess this isn't bad and it's a great alternative to walls.

Dapple Toy and Surface Wipes - $3.49

This is the travel pack so it can be tossed easily into my diaper bag.  There are only 20 wipes in this travel pack so I don't expect it to last a very long time. It stated that it was natural with baby safe ingredients so mommy took a look at the back. It says its "free of chlorine, parabens, phthalates, SLES, and dyes" otherwise known as the yucky stuff. I've never used these before so it will be fun trying them out.

Sneakz Organic Chocolate Milkshake - $4.50

We got 2 of these and although I'm not a huge fan of chocolate drinks I might be willing to try this. According to the Sneakz Organic company this is a full serving of veggies in every box. These are the ingredients. Organic Skim Milk, Filtered Water, Sneaks Organic Veggie Blend (Organic Dried Sweet Potato, Organic Dried Carrot, Organic Dried Broccoli), Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Dutch Cocoa, Organic Vanilla Extract, Carrageenan, Natural Flavors. No GMO's, No Antibiotics, No Synthetic Hormones. Sounds good to me, now all I have to do is try it and see if I like it.

Udderly Smooth Udder Cream 2oz - $4.00

Mommy has used this before in the big jar so she was pleased to get this in a small travel size. Yes it does say udderly as in cows. It was originally made for cows but can be used on everyone including little ones such as me. This is a water based moisturizer and it has a very mild fresh scent. Nothing too strong but it doesn't last too long so you're going to want to keep this in your diaper to keep on moisturizing throughout the day.

Baby Ecos Hypoallergenic Laundry Detergent 4oz - $0.50

This was a sample 4oz size so I would only expect to get at least 2 loads of laundry with this, because it is hypoallergenic I don't expect to have an allergic reaction but one never knows. Mommy will try this over the weekend and see what happens.

Little Rabbit Wait for the Moon - $7.19

Have I told you how much I love books? I just love to read so the more books I get the better for me. I was pleasantly surprised to get a board book and will be reading this tonight. It seems like a very good bedtime story and the illustrations are also lovely. Mommy and I will sure have a fun time with this one.

ok lets try this drink! Do I like it? I don't think so!
Total of our June Bluum Box was $27.58 which is a little disappointing. We did enjoy getting our book and our crayons but would have preferred to have gotten something else besides that chocolate milk and the scribble pad.

Next month's box is going to be Lets Make Friends and I hope its better than this one.

You may use the following link and get your own Bluum Box without waiting for an invite.

Almost Wordless Wednesday: Toddler Helmet Safety

It's Wednesday once again. The days do surely go by pretty quickly when you're doing nothing. What am I saying? I'm always doing nothing. Well, today is my....

A Wordless Wednesday has no text but only pictures but because I like to talk, well at least on the blog, I couldn't possibly have a Wordless Wednesday so that's why it's an Almost Wordless Wednesday.

Mommy and I want to take today to once again hand out a safety tip to all the parents visiting our site. Today we're going to talk a little about Helmet Safety.

Whenever you buy your toddler  a new bike, trike, skates or even a scooter always remember to buy a safety helmet. Elbow and knee pads are optional but a helmet isn't. If you haven't bought one as yet, we suggest getting right on it. Helmets provide the best kind of protection against head injuries. You don't want anything to happen to our little brains now do you?

So the next question is: What kind of helmet should I choose? May we suggest choosing a helmet that has the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) sticker on the inside which means that it is certified by the CPSC. One that fits your toddler's shape and size of his/head and also one that your toddler likes.

What about the fit? If possible take your toddler with you when buying a helmet. Let them choose the one with the design they want. Give them choices. The helmet should fit squarely on top of their head and not tilted. If it is tilted it will not protect their head and will cause more harm than good. It should not be so loose that it slides down over their eyes or shifts from side to side. The chin strap should fit snugly but not too tight where it becomes a choking hazard. If your child or you can fit 2 fingers inside the helmet then it's too big and you may want to size down or insert the fitted pads that come with your helmet.

We suggest also using the 2V1 Rule:

Make sure that there is 2 finger-widths above the eyebrows
The straps should form a V under each ear
1 finger should fit between the chin strap and your toddlers chin.

So when should I replace the helmet? You should replace your toddlers' helmet when it becomes too small or if your child has had an accident with it. Just like car-seats, you don't want to use a helmet that's been involved in a crash, and most definitely if there's been a recall. I suggest always send in your registration cards so you can be informed of all recalls. They should also be replaced at least every 2-3 years because just like with everything they do deteriorate over time.

How about taking care of your toddlers' helmet? Always follow the manufacturers' instructions for taking care of the helmet.

Do I suggest a particular helmet? I do not but I currently use the Giro Me2 Toddler Bike Helmet and I love it but you can get a helmet at almost any toy or bike store. Just follow the tips above, and remember, a helmet isn't an accessory but a necessity!

Splash Into Summer: Picnicking with your Toddler

Our Splash into Summer series continue and today it's all about picnicking with your toddler. Today we plan on giving you some tips on how to create a really nice picnic for and with your toddler both indoors and outdoors.

It's been a long hot summer and guess what? It's not over yet. Instead of staying indoors how about a picnic? Yes! A picnic doesn't always have to be at the beach or somewhere terribly exotic or expensive. You can have it right in your own backyard but if you live in the city like some of my readers do you can even have an indoor picnic. But how do you get your little one to join in the fun and help out?

Give your toddler her own little basket and let her fill it with whatever she wants to in there for the picnic of course. Give her options and let her choose and don't be like my mommy. She gives me options and then say "this will be better for you". That's not letting me choose mommy!

If your toddler is anything like me, they might get very upset when you do that. So give them healthy options and please once again let them choose.

Here are a few playtime activity you might want to think about:
  • If you're indoors spread a blanket on the ground. What's a picnic without a blanket? You can also do that outdoors as well. We little ones like laying on blankets especially outdoors.
  • Make up your own games which us toddlers love to delight in. I especially love it when mommy pretend to be an animal. She makes the most silly sounds. This will help with animal recognition and is also fun.

  • Having a big bouncy beach ball is perfect for both your indoor and outdoor picnic. We may not be great catchers but who doesn't like to throw or kick or whatever you do to a ball. This in turn helps out a lot with our hand to eye coordination.

  • If you are doing an outdoor picnic and have a sandbox, pretend you're at the beach. I love digging around in the sand and I'm sure your little toddler would too.

What about food? Well here are a few healthy choices:
  • Fruits such as grapes, cherries, strawberries, apple slices, bananas etc. Any fruit your toddler may love. Be careful with small pieces because you don't want your little one to choke so supervision again comes in handy here.
  • Baby Carrots and Cherry tomatoes are great veggies as well. I love to eat cherry tomatoes.
  • Cheeses. I especially love the string cheese so these are always around for me.
  • For drinks it's a better option to do 100% juice boxes instead of canned sodas and include milk if your toddler likes it as well. If your toddler can't drink from a straw then a sippy cup would have to do.
  • If you're doing sandwiches, cut them up into cute and adorable shapes with a cookie cutter or those delightful FunBites if you own one.
  • And be sure if you're outdoors to have water available as well and to make it extra special stick some fruit in it to give it some flavor. Your toddler would be so intrigued with the fruits floating or sunk to the bottom that might not even realize that they're drinking water.

What about friends? Well if your toddler has no siblings or friends who can come along to your picnic you can always invite your stuffed animals. They would love to join in on the fun too.

If you are planning an outdoor picnic I also encourage you to use the necessary summer safety precaution that we mentioned in our Summer Protection Guide.

Once again we hope our little guide has been helpful in you creating what we call a Toddler's Picnic Party.

ebeanstalk.com Review

As most of you know mommy and I love getting new things and after getting our Citrus Lane box mommy decided that she wanted to get me some new toys so we started our search on the world wide web or as most normal people would say the internet. Or as my brother Mikael would say "the innernet".

I have quite a few toys but most of them are now for babies younger than me. I'm a big kid now you know. So mommy did a search for toys for 1 and 2 year olds and this website popped up in our google search that said "Smart 1-year old toys - Ebeanstalk.com". Now you know they were talking about me right?

Tips for Taking your Toddler to the Movies

Today mommy and I and my big brother went to see Monsters University. Last week we went to see Despicable Me 2 and I can surely tell you that both movies were amazing.

Well actually can I really tell you that? If I'm totally honest I fell asleep within 20 minutes of both movies starting but I did wake up before the end of Monsters University which is something I didn't do for Despicable Me 2. Why do they make the previews so long? I would prefer to get to the movies and go right to the movie. 20 minutes of previews is not my idea of fun.

This obviously is not my first movie visit so today mommy and I want to give you a few tips for talking your toddler to the movies.

Most parents with toddlers prefer the early morning show called the early bird show. We recommend taking your toddler to these showing since other toddlers will be there and other moms will understand when we start fussing or talking. We may have also just gotten up from a nap and will be all fresh and ready to go. Unlike me, I go to sleep at the movies whether I've just had a nap or not. We've also noticed that weekdays are much better than weekends as well.

The bathroom if you're potty training should be your first stop. Make that first potty break so that you're not getting up in the middle of the movie. If your toddler doesn't want to use the bathroom I suggest choosing a seat that's near the aisle so you can make a quick break for it if needed.

If possible skip the concession stand. We know that popcorn smells delicious and so does the other food that's there. Here's the good thing about being with a toddler. More than likely you're going to have a diaper bag. Know what that means? You can bring your own healthier snacks for us to eat. Mommy normally pack my bag with 100% juices and snacks. It's not only healthier for you but it's going to save you some money too. Have you seen the price of popcorn at the movies lately?

Another thing to consider is the rating of the movie. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of G-rated movies available and although most PG-rated movie might be appropriate you may want to read the reviews. Mommy and I have found that visiting IMDB before going to see a movie helps. You don't want any unexpected scares, and that brings us to our final tip.

If your toddler is afraid of the dark then a movie theatre might not be the place you want to go. The theatre becomes dark once the feature starts and that may scare your toddler. You can always wait until the movie comes out on DVD and watch it together at home.

Well we hope that we've been helpful and if you were looking for spoilers for Monsters University we're sorry to disappoint. Mommy says spoilers aren't nice.

Splash into Summer: Backyard Water Safety

Today’s post is part of the Splash Into Summer series put together by a great group of bloggers. Each week the participating bloggers will be sharing seven posts related to a specific summer theme. This week’s theme is Water Fun, and today I’m sharing a bit about Backyard Water Safety.

Caution: Fun but can also be very dangerous

Ok so it's the summer and most people have a pool in their backyard, whether its a huge built in pool or a small inflatable one like mommy and daddy got this year to replace the huge one we had last year, we need to think about pool/water safety.

I'm sure most parents know that toddlers and babies, yes toddlers such as myself can drown in as little as two inches (six centimeter) of water so guess what that means? Constant supervision is a must! That doesn't mean that you let me play in the water while you chat on your phone or talk to your friends. It means constant eyes on me at all times and preferably I must be within arms reach.

Know what goes hand in hand with that? Learning and knowing CPR. Luckily for me since my mommy is a medic in the US Army she is CPR certified but you can also become certified. The American Red Cross offers classes to get you certified which will afford you some piece of mind.

Flotation devices and arm floaties are a great idea and fun to use but never rely on them completely to keep your little one safe.

Floaties are an option but don't rely on them for your child's safety

Never leave your infant or toddler alone in any source of water. I know a lot of you say...
"I'd never do that!"
You're waiting on that important phone call and your phone rings and you realize that it's indoors. Instead of leaving for just that "1 minute" that you say it will take for you to run and grab it, please grab me and my little friends first and take us with you. It only takes one minute for something to go wrong. Keep your phone with you.

Supervision at all times!

Make sure that the play area around the pool is clear of toys and any other item that can trip your little one. Also if you do have toys around be sure to remove them after you're done so your little one isn't tempted to go back and play with them around the pool. A cover for your pool is also recommended.

If you do have a built in permanent pool, make sure that you have a fence that is AT LEAST 4 feet tall enclosing it with a self latching gate that is out of our reach so we can't open them ourselves. Also make sure that there is nothing around for your toddler, especially the daredevil ones like me to climb up on to get over and remember to always lock the gate after every use.

Once again we advocate wearing protective covering such as a sunhat, sunscreen, sunglasses. The temperature of the water is important too. Toddlers especially me,  do not generally like cold water and would prefer if the water is warm, remember our body temperature drops more quickly when we're in water so if we start shivering get us out. So have that towel nearby.

Have an enjoyable Summer!

I hope I was able to share a bit of what mommy and I have learned about water safety with you. Be safe and have an amazing summer!
