World Autism Awareness Day

April is the month for Autism Awareness and I'm extremely supportive of this since I'm very close to someone who is Autistic. He's very special to me and I love him very much. He's my 8 year old brother.

Today is World Autism Awareness Day and today in celebration of this day I am wearing blue. I've also gotten my Kind and Cuddly Autism Speaks Bear with Autism Awareness tee from Build-A-Bear Workshop. $1 from the purchase of the bear and 50 cents from the purchase of the tee will be donated to fund research into the causes and treatments of autism.

Me and My Kind and Cuddly Autism Speaks Bear

It's very difficult to diagnose a child with Autism and just because your child may be developmentally delayed does not mean that he's Autistic but don't hesitate to bring the issue up with your pediatrician. After all no-one knows your little one like you do.

Taken from the Autism Speaks website.

The following "red flags" may indicate your child is at risk for an autism spectrum disorder. If your child exhibits any of the following, please don’t delay in asking your pediatrician or family doctor for an evaluation:
  • No big smiles or other warm, joyful expressions by six months or thereafter
  • No back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles or other facial expressions by nine months
  • No babbling by 12 months
  • No back-and-forth gestures such as pointing, showing, reaching or waving by 12 months
  • No words by 16 months
  • No meaningful, two-word phrases (not including imitating or repeating) by 24 months
  • Any loss of speech, babbling or social skills at any age
Today please show your support for Autism Awareness by wearing blue, buying a blue lightbulb or by even buying your Autism Awareness Bear from Build-A-Bear Workshop.

  1. Hugs and kisses for your big brother Madison xoxox. And. Kudos to you for spreading awareness... I have 3 nephews who are as well .

    1. Children with special needs are just like you and me and are truly amazing in their own way, you just need to get to know them. Hugs and kisses to your nephews from me and my mommy. <3

  2. Thanks for sharing such a useful information. Some times a child can have developmental delays due to delay in delivery or pre mature birth can also lead to delay in learning, talking, walking etc. Same case happened with me; I gave birth to a pre- mature child. I was worried because he hadn't started talking at 2. I consulted to a doctor who check and my kid was all right. After some time he started speaking few words like mumma, papa, ball, etc. I was happy that my child was absolutely fine.

    1. That is so true. I am 18 months old but I was born prematurely as well and I still don't talk but mommy isn't too worried. I'm sure I'll be fine but if I'm not mommy is prepared. Thanks for stopping by. ♥ Madison

  3. Wow, sorry, I just found this blog via the UMI giveaway ... and saw this photo of you under the blogroll. My son also has Autism - and he has a little sister a bit younger than you. I hope she can grow up to love and support his big brother like you do Madison! =D

    1. Hi Stormy I'm sure she will do the same thing as I do. She will love him the same all because he's her brother. ♥ Madison
