Prepare for the Cold & Flu Season with a Cold & Flu Basket ~ #ConquerTheCold

It's FALL! The season that I've been looking forward to most of all. I'm not a fan of spring, because of my allergies, and I'm not big on summer because of the heat. However, I just LOVE fall and everything, well almost everything, that it brings. The changing colors of the leaves, everything pumpkin-spice and the cool weather. However, with the change of weather usually comes the dreaded cold and flu.

Madison and I have already been hit with the cold, and we are trying to avoid seeing the flu in our household, so we usually take a few precautions. We make sure that we wash our hands as often as we can, cover our coughs and sneezes and get our yearly flu shot. Did you know that an estimated 20% of Americans will get the flu this year? With symptoms lasting as long as a week, now is the time to stock up on all the necessities needed to ease those symptoms without having to make a flu-induced trip to the store. Today I want to share with you our cold and flu basket, and what we do to make sure that we're prepared. Since my household includes children, my basket usually includes products for both kids and adults alike and are kept in our basket that is easily accessible when the need arises. It's really simple to make and I'll share that with you right now.

Get a basket
This is your first step. Get a basket that can hold all your cold and flu essentials. I had a basket that I purchased around Easter and that's what I use for my household. I decorated it with a fall ribbon to make it look more fall-like.

Get your essentials
As I mentioned, I also have children in my household, so our cold and flu basket usually include products for both children and adults alike. I usually pick up our products at my local Walmart. Here's what you can find in my basket.

  • Vicks® VapoRub™ for both adults and kids alike. Vicks VapoRub is one product that I can say that I grew up with. My parents swore by it, and if any of us children got sick, even if it was a slight sniffle, my mother would rub the ointment on our chest and back and send us to bed. Now as an adult, I do the same thing with my children. It's medicated vapors works quickly to relieve cough and cold symptoms. And it is now available in children and baby formulas.

  • Vicks DayQuil™ and NyQuil™. While both temporarily relieve cold and flu symptoms, they are as different as night and day (pun intended). NyQuil is great for night time use when you want to relief and a good night's sleep, while DayQuil relieves your symptoms and allows you to do what needs to be done during the day, without the drowsy effect. My husband loves them both, so I always keep them in stock for him.

  • Vicks Sinex™ Moisturizing Ultra Fine Mist spray. With colds usually comes congestion. My husband suffers from seasonal allergies and he's often congested in the spring and the fall. Sinex is a nasal spray decongestant that works to relieve sinus pressure allowing him to breathe more freely and easily.
  • Vicks VapoInhaler™ is also one that I keep handy as well and another Vicks product that I have been using for years. It's also one product that my parents always had on hand. It's non-medicated, but gives you that refreshing vapor that you find in the ointment.

  • Puffs Facial Tissue. My basket isn't complete without facial tissue and I just love Puffs tissue, especially Puffs Plus Lotion. It's perfect for runny and sore noses. When the sniffles come, I need something that is soft and won't irritate your nose. After blowing for the hundredth time, you don't want anything to irritate your nose any more than necessary. I keep full size boxes of Puffs on hand and Puffs to go in my bag and car for emergencies on the go. After all, "A nose in need deserves Puffs indeed!".

These product have helped our family survive the cold and flu season yearly. On 10/29, Walmart shoppers can save up to $5 on medicine cabinet essentials just in time for cold and flu season. On this date, look in the P&G brandSAVER in your local Sunday newspaper or at PGeveryday.com to find coupons for $0.50 off Puffs and $1-$3 off Vicks products including DayQuil, NyQuil, Sinex and VapoRub. This arsenal of cold and flu symptom relievers will help your family feel better this season.

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of P&G . The opinions and text are all mine.

  1. A cold and flu basket sounds perfect to me! When school season and cold season collide, I usually get caught in the middle. =/

  2. This is something everyone could use this time of year. I know in our house, our three kids bring home ever possible cold and flu that they could conceivably get.

  3. Yes to all of the above, especially the Puff Tissues as they are truly my go to tissues all year round, especially during cold and flu season though, too.

  4. Nyquil is a life saver for me! It is the only way I can sleep when I am sick. I am hoping to avoid a cold this year, as the kids and I were sick about a month ago and I don't want it again lol

  5. I actually feel like I'm coming down with something right now. :-/ I have a couple of these things, that we just always have around, but I need to pick up a couple more that you featured. And I had no idea that vapo rub came in a children's formula!

  6. You can never have enough cold and flu medicine kicking around this time of year! Word of advice: Rubbing your feet (or, whoever is sick) with Vick's vapor rub and putting socks on works wonders!

  7. I've never thought of doing a basket, this is a great idea and totally something I'll end to my nieces and nephews next time the flu hits them.

  8. This is an awesome way to prepare for the upcoming cold and flu season! I never thought of a basket with all the necessary supplies, awesome tips!

  9. I always have to have at least one bottle of Nyquil around in case someone needs it. Not being able to sleep because of cold symptoms is the worst!

  10. It's really important to be prepared with everything that you might need! I don't think our house ever runs out of vicks! We can't live without it. These are definitely must haves at home.

  11. There's nothing better than being prepared for the flu season, especially with the weather getting colder and colder. It's awesome that you shared these must haves!

  12. It's so easy to catch the virus and get sick with flu so it definitely helps to be prepared! I think with 2 boys, I learned that having vicks products around is a must! These are all awesome products that can help you make that flu go away.

  13. It is really important for me to stock up on cold and flu products that work for both myself and my child. Vicks has been a trusted brand ever since I was a child and I am happy that it helps me with my own children now. That's shocking that 20% will get the flu this year. I really hope I'm not one of them!

  14. I swear by Vick’s VapoRub! It’s one of my must haves to keep on hand during cold and flu season.

  15. My husband has a cold right now and thankfully we have DayQuil and NyQuil at home. It really helps relieve the cold symptoms, especially the stuffiness and sore throat.

  16. I wish someone would bring one of those baskets right now. It's hitting fast and hard this year. Great idea.

  17. Vicks Vaporub has been with my family for ages. My mom rubbed it on the soles of our feet and then covered them with socks. It helps ease the congestion. That is the same thing I did with my kids to help them sleep when they were down with a cold.

  18. The weather is not our friend! It's been hot and cold, hot and cold. It's no wonder the kids aren't feeling their best. Need to stock up for cold & flu season.

  19. I love this idea. Besides, get rid of all of last year's drugs and start fresh!

  20. As an adult, I developed some weird reaction to cold medication. If I take just one pill, I won't sleep even a minute. I once went 3 days without sleeping at all from taking cold medication at which point I dropped it cold turkey. I've taken a few pills here and there by accident (thinking they were Sudafed)But now I just go the more natural remedy route because I definitely need my sleep when I'm sick!

  21. A basket is such a good idea to create before flu season is in full effect so if someone does catch it, everything is extremely accessible and easy to find

  22. This is such a smart idea. There is nothing worse than getting sick, only to have to run to the store for supplies. It's also a great reminder to check what you have and make sure it hasn't expired.

  23. I hate that it is cold and flu season again! I swear by Puffs though; I had a bad case of flu last year and they were a lifesaver.

  24. I swear by vapo rub for every cold we suffer with! Always makes a difference and helps me breathe!

  25. You can never be too prepared. We have a box dedicated to cold and flu as well. Thankfully, we haven't had to use it in the last few years, but it's never too much to be prepared. Great stuff in your basket.

  26. This is such an amazing idea. A cold and flu basket is awesome. Something I haven't given much thought to even though my kids have been battling some form of cold or bug since they started back at school! - Jeanine

  27. Vicks products are great and a basket full of it is a cool idea. Prevention is totally better than cure.

  28. What a great idea. I can see bringing it to loved ones (or leaving it on the porch to not get sick)! And having it at home for house guests and us too.
Cold and flu season always upsets me!

  29. it's so important to take care of the kids during the cold season! They are catching so many bugs these days!

  30. It's so smart to be stocked up because the last thing you want to do is run out for medicine when you're not feeling well! I can take care of a sick family but when I start feeling it too, we'll all fall apart if I don't do something to feel better soon!

  32. I am getting together one of these baskets for the holiday season! I refuse to be sick this year, or if I do, at least attack it so it doesn't stick around.

    ReplyDelete
  33. This is a perfect basket because so many people could use the cold and flu items.

  34. This is a great idea! It's that time of year, and we usually get hit with a cold at least once per season!
