Why I'm Not Visiting Your Website

It's really not you, it's me, but I just had to tell you that this is why I'm not visiting your site!

AnnMarie here, and most of my friends know that I have a very dry sense of humor and can be very snarky. As my mom would have said, when "snarkiness" was being distributed, I went to the front of the line and went back for seconds. However, today my friend, I want to tell you why I'm not visiting your website. It's not that you're not a great writer, you're fantastic, and your photos are phenomenal. However, there are a few things I just can't deal with, and I'm going to tell you about them, however, I JUST CAN'T DEAL WITH YOUR ADS! There! I said it, your ads are driving me insane along with a few other things.

I know you're a blogger and you need to make that money, but I just can't read what you wrote or see your pretty pictures because your ads keep getting in the way. And why do you think it's cool to put an ad in the middle of your post, trying to get me to click on it, thinking it's part of your story? That click baiting ain't cool son! I hate scrolling through your amazing post only to be redirected because I accidentally clicked on one of your ads. Don't talk about the ones I can't even get out of because I'm on mobile reading your wonderful, well I hope it was wonderful, post. I just couldn't do it, so I clicked out of your site. Ads on everything, ads everywhere, so many ads that I'm starting to think you work for an advertising company. Too many, ads, ads, ADS. You get the picture?

Don't get me started with your music that starts playing automatically as well, and sometimes your videos. See, I have a particular set of music that I just LOVE listening to, and the ones you play aren't them. I would love to select my own music to listen to without you forcing me to listen to what you want me to hear. It's bad enough I'm reading what you want me to read, how about letting me have my own choice of music? Turn the music off! Sure I can do that myself, but I can also X out of your page and never come back either.

I'm also not a fan of your pop-ups asking me to subscribe, or any pop-up whatsoever! I came to your blog for a reason, because I wanted to read what you had to say. If I love what you have to say and think that "hey, I would love to hear more", I'd subscribe on my own. I really don't need you to tell me that I should. Don't be a bully! Stop trying to force me to subscribe. It's a major turn off and you want me turned on, you know you do, so I can keep returning to your amazing site.

I also don't like that I have to click NEXT, a million times to read your article. Seriously, can't you just put it on one page? This isn't a Harry Potter novel! I don't really need to read a million pages to get to the ending of your fantastic tale. I really don't have time for all that page loading. We're all busy people here and my time is money, I don't have much of it to waste. If my internet connection is extremely slow that also means I can be on your site for about 20 minutes reading an article that should generally take 3minutes to read. Once again, not cool!

See all that fine print that I have to strain my eyes to see? Yes me neither, because I clicked off as soon as I saw it. My Ophthalmologist said that I have 20/15 vision, but that doesn't mean that I want to read 6pt fonts. How about making it a little bigger, like about 12-14 which is normal so that everyone can read it. And while I love dark colors, I generally only love it when it comes to clothing. That's because no one can see when I spill my coffee on it. However, your very dark background is so depressing that I never want to visit your site again.

However, don't decide that you want to go really bright and add a lot of colors either. No, no, no! You know that saying, less is more. Trust me! In your case, less is what you want to aim for. Stick with the classics.

And while on this subject of why I'm not visiting your site, I'm going to be really honest with you here. Even though all those above do get to me. What really, really irks me is your grammar and spelling. Especially your spelling. Now I get it, it can be difficult remembering how to use Their, There and They're, but how about having a second set of eyes read your work before you hit that publish button. Nothing turns me off more than reading all those errors. I feel like I'm reading the work of a 5 year old. Sorry Madison! Despite your beautiful photos and me knowing what you want to say, I shouldn't have to work harder trying to figure it out. However, don't go crazy trying to fill it with all those big words either. I might be smart, but I prefer not to read posts where I have to keep pulling out my dictionary, or asking Siri, what's the meaning of a word. Keep it simple please so everyone can understand.

Now I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, and you know I love you, however, until changes are made I just won't be visiting  you any longer. Consider our relationship over. I said in the beginning it wasn't really you, it was me. I guess I lied, it's so totally you!

  1. I love your sense of humor and I am with you on many of the above, especially the pop-ups, which just drive me crazy in all honesty!!!

  2. I am in total agreement with you here! Yes, as bloggers we need to make money to pay the bills but some of these sites that have 5 or 6 ads, especially the ones that popup right over the middle of your post make it almost impossible to read the post. There have been so many times that I have tried reading posts on mobile only to accidentally click on an ad as I am scrolling. If I can't avoid your ads, I'm clicking off of your site.

  3. Boom! Dropping a big old truth bomb! I will leave a blog in a millisecond if I get bombarded with popups and all that other garbage. I have a high, HIGH end computer, and some of these sites hit me with so many pop up ads, auto play videos, pop ups to subscribe to newsletters, and every other darn thing, that it lags me down to a snails pace. STOP IT. PLEASE!!!

  4. Uh huh. That's what I've been wanting to say for the longest time. Being a VA doesn't make things easier. You have a choice to close that tab but we don't, lol. I think... nope... I hope bloggers will read this and clean up their blogs a little. Damn. I agree with everything, I don't even have a favorite complain on the list, they are all equally annoying.

  5. This gave me a good laugh! Every single one of these points are so true! As a blogger I understand that you want to make money, but you don't have to assault your readers with pop-ups in the process!

  6. I have the same feelings as you. I can't stand the pop-up or the music. That is why I have neither on my site. Hopefully, you will visit ;-)

  7. Oh man, AMEN. You were the one who helped me see I didn't want ads, except the ones I've always had.
Also, pop-ups are a pet peeve of mine, but nothing makes me as mad as music or videos playing. It's so startling!

  8. Yes! I cannot stand all the ads that pop up. Sometimes they freeze up my computer and I don't even want to bother to continue. I also hate music in the background. My speakers are always up so I get startled. And it's usually crap music too.

  9. I feel similar to you! I dislike the pop ups and tons of ads that get in the way (I hear this all the time from others) I don't mind some, you know the ones that don't block what you're trying to read/see! I keep this in mind every time I write a post (I ask myself the question) WOULD THIS BUG ME?! and if yes, then I find an alternative way : )
funny and true post, great work : )

  10. OH this is so spot on!!! I am so irritated at the pop ups!! If I have to click multiple times I am out!

  11. You know I can handle it when it's the sidebar or one at the bottom but seriously some sites are so bad for what like $400 to $600. That's not even worth it. Get some sponsorships!

  12. I hate when you go to a site that lets you read a paragraph and then you have to hit next. It takes 10 clicks to get to the end of the story.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I agree with you on every point. The pop ups in particular drive me crazy.

  14. You nailed EVERYthing in this post and I absolutely get your humor. I DID notice a few grammatical errors 😒... (just kidding! 😉 Lol) This was a perfect way to say what most people are "too polite" to say.

  15. Couldn't agree more with all of this. I feel the same way - too many ads and popups ruin the experience and clickbait, forget it!! Also no to the list of ten things I need to click through on - WE ALL KNOW why you are doing that for pete's sake! It is dull and unimaginative. LOVE this post. Sharing widely.

  16. Those pop ups drive me crazy, too. I also hate it when a blogger somewhat forces you to subscribe. Lol.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I love this post! Super candid and honest and true. :)

  18. While ads can be beneficial they shouldn't distract. They always get in the way at the wrong time.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ahahah I hate some ads! That's why they are not on my website. I want my readers to be comfortable, not forced to click!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh you nailed it! This is totally true. Pop ups are so annoying!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lol, luckily you must like my blog as you visit it haha. But I am with you sista, I hate click bait and ads. I want to include ads on my site to make money but I don't want them in the middle of my post because that is annoying! x

    ReplyDelete
  22. I so agree with this one hundred percent. I mean I do would like to make money like everyone else but the pop ups just frustrate me and hate it immediately. I have the option on the bottom but nothing pops up because I hate it. Great read and such a powerful post.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm not fond of subscription pop-ups - especially those that you can't immediately find a way to close - and video ads that automatically start playing. These things take away from the beautiful content we look forward to reading.

    ReplyDelete
  24. You said it girl. The ads on some sites are incredibly frustrating and make you browsing experience intolerable.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Preach! I hate all those dang pop up ads. I have a popup, but it is down in the corner and is easily deleted to the reader.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I had a pop up and it was generating a great number of subscribers although many claim to hate it. In reality I hate it too and that's the reason why I removed it from my blog. Reading your post made me have mixed feelings but it was a nice read!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Amen sister!! I can't stand websites that are overcrowded with ads and popups!! Nothing will make me click off a site faster!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Amen to the pop-up newsletter subscription forms! Hey readers the best way to stop this obnoxious behavior is to not sign up and avoid those sites that do it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. LOL. Well, same here! That's why I don't have popups on our blog and I only have a few ads - only 2 to be exact. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I couldn't agree with you more! If I get hit with popups or if I have to click next a bunch of times, I am out. Seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Which is why I took off two ad programs that I was with. The funny thing those ads often pay nothing, just crowd out the screen, so off they went. I actually have almost no ads at all now, I am just over them.

    ReplyDelete
  32. You hit the nail on the head. Popups are the worst. My goal is to keep uprunforlife as clean as possible. We want our readers to come back to visit regularly. Ive been guilty of grammer but since we started using Grammerly it helps to catch simple mistakes.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I hate ads too. I don't like it when I'll be reading a blog post and all of a sudden this intrusive ad pops up right in my face!

    ReplyDelete
  34. OMG YES. Thank you for saying it out loud. Lol. I didn't want to be rude but it's true! Pop up ads and subscription prompts are annoying. I can't stand them and would rather not go back to the site, thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  35. OMG someone said it. Its the huge pop up ads, ooo especially the ones that play automatically I hate those. And the pop up newletter subscriptions should be diminished a little too.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I have to agree. I strongly dislike the ads that pop right up into your face and are hard to exit out if. Other than that I totally understand the need for ads, just not too many. Some of them aren't even ads some of the pop ups are "Subscribe to me" kinds.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm a relatively new blogger and I currently don't have ads on my blog yet but I'll definitely go back to this post when that time comes.

    ReplyDelete
  38. YES!!! The pop-ups are enough to make me quit the site all together! I hate having to hit exit 100 times too to read content. You are spot on!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hhaha this is funny but at same time its true, agree with some of your points. I am new and I guess my blog isn't that bad lol hope you could review it and please let me know your thoughts on it.

    ReplyDelete
  40. This is so funny, yet true! I hate pop-ups too. I also find it annoying when I have to click read more or next to just land on ad page!

    ReplyDelete
  41. There are so many writers and websites that I don't go to and read anymore, completely because of the overwhelming click-bait ads.

    ReplyDelete
  42. All of these ... ALL OF THEM! Thanks - and I totally appreciate the snark ... I tried to pass it on to my daughter ... she does her bit

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wow! They say honesty is the best policy & you sure are honest. Can't do nothing but respect it.
