How to Save Money While Traveling

Today we want to share some tips on how you can save money while traveling.

There's nothing that I love more than traveling. I grew up in a family that enjoyed traveling, and my mother took me on vacations every summer. I saw the different cultures of each country and came back after every visit with a sense of awe. It's why I live by this quote:
Travel is the only thing that you can buy that makes you richer.
While traveling can be expensive, getting to your final destination is so worth it. As a family, we do a major destination once a year. However, as a mother of a pre-schooler, I want to visit as many places while she is still young. I also try to go on an international trip once a year. Travel doesn't necessarily have to cost you lots of money, and I have shared a few tips before such as how to travel when you're broke, how to travel on a budget and even how to start saving for your next trip. There are so many ways to save and today's post will share a few more.

Flights

When it comes to travel, transportation is always going to be your most expensive cost, especially if you're traveling overseas. While you can drive to your destination if you're in the US thus saving you some money, sometimes it can be cheaper to fly. There are many ways to monitor the price of your airline ticket. Google.com/flights is one way, where you track the price of the flight you want. While it's best to purchase your ticket early, you can also save by flying into less popular airports. Layover flights can also be cheaper than a direct one if you're not in a hurry.

Use Deal Sites

Sites such as Groupon can get you discounts on some very popular destinations. I have used them myself for quick getaways. Another awesome site is LivingSocial which is similar to Groupon. With LivingSocial, you will also find discounts on staycation packages, food and drink, and even events and activities.

Accommodations

While staying with friends and family is by far one of the cheapest ways to save money while traveling, it's not always feasible. You may not have any friends or family where you want to visit. Finding a smaller hotel or staying at an AirBnB will be cheaper than staying at a five-star hotel. Staying outside the city will also be more economical than staying inside the city. With this option, it may take you a bit longer to get into the city, just enjoy the sights and soak up the savings.

Transportation

Public transportation is always going to be cheaper than renting a car. While you may be thinking about the weekly rate, don't forget the price of gas and if you may have to pay tolls. Most major cities have a public transportation system. Check out their app and/or maps if available, and see how easy it will be to get to the places you want to visit using public transport. If necessary, you can also use Uber.

Food

Whenever I travel, I always make it my business to bring a few perishables with me. I also try and find the nearest supermarket so I can stock up on essential supplies. Eating out every night can be very expensive. Walk with snacks whenever you go out, so you don't have to stop at a restaurant to eat. If you do decide to go to a restaurant, ask for recommendations and check out the reviews.

Money

So you've saved for your trip, but make sure you also have a budget for spending money. You might be tempted to pull out that credit card, but remember interest will be added.  Which in the long run can work out to be more expensive. So your $100 shopping spree just turned into a $110 splurge. Instead, use your debit card. It's also a lot safer than cash.

Attractions

If you're planning on going sightseeing and taking in the attractions, it can all add up. However, there are always free attractions in every city. Check the city's visitors bureau website for more information. Sites such as City Pass or Smart Destinations can also save you hundreds of dollars. Pick up a CityPass or GoCard for your intended destination and enjoy some sightseeing, take some pictures and cherish those memories.

  6. We're actually flying to one city next month and driving the rest of our trip. It's working out better for us this way. And we couldn't get out of staying at a hotel near family, but I found a suite with a full kitchen, so we can cook a lot while we're there (way cheaper than eating out!)

  7. These are all really smart ideas. I budget super carefully when we travel, which sadly is rarely. I allot a certain amount of money per activity, and when it's gone, it's gone. When I went on a cruise with my son, I ended up actually bringing home almost half of my money, mostly because I packed like a genius (if I do say so myself, lol) and didn't need to buy any random yet crazy costly essentials along the way.

  30. I always save up for my trips and budget accordingly. I also put aside an extra $100 or so for emergencies or for any extras I might incur along the way.

    ReplyDelete
  31. These are really great tips! I can't wait to start traveling more often and to more exotic places. I save by planning ahead. When I am prepared for what I want to do I can be sure no unexpected costs happen unless they truly have to.

  32. We always take public transportation when we travel if we can, except for the transfer from the airport to the hotel and back. Those I like to have secure because of time and such. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. When you really take these as a whole and do all of most of them, it makes a HUGE difference. We did Disney that way once, although it's gotten more pricey for us.
I'll need this for summer travel.

  34. We save vacation money by checking in at extended stay hotels. These places usually have a fully equipped kitchen so we can cook our own food instead of dining out at restaurants.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I am definitely like you, I always bring some food along when travelling. I may call myself frugal sometimes but I like saving whenever I can.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Great tips! Food can be so expensive! When we went to Mexico early June we packed snacks for the plane and airport for the kids since they always want to snack.

    ReplyDelete
  37. These are such great ideas. We love travelling but it can take a toll on our wallets.

  38. We just got back from Orlando and man trips can get expensive. The biggest thing I try to do is plan everything out. Then I can look at menus to see how much things are etc.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Great tips! One thing we do is fly budget airlines as much as possible. All planes are going at the same speed, same time, and same direction. If I can save a few hundred dollars by flying with a budget airline, then I'm going in that direction!

    ReplyDelete
  40. We travel often and with young children, food is where we save the most. It just doesn't make sense to spend on full meals when we know they won't eat most of it. Packing snacks and items they can eat as meals is much smarter to stretch our vacation budget.

    ReplyDelete
  41. These are great tips! I am always looking for ways to keep our travel costs down, especially with kids.

    ReplyDelete
  42. These are great tips! I try to take my own snacks with me for my family to have when we travel. I also keep an eye on deal websites to see if there are any attraction discounts available that we can use. And sometimes, depending on where we're traveling, there are discounts provided to employees of the company I work for major attractions, like Disneyworld.

  43. These are all great tips. I am pretty frugal myself so one thing I try to do when I can is pack something to eat so that I'm not spending all my money on food.
