12 Valentine’s Day Date Ideas

Valentine’s Day is a special day to show our significant other how much we love him or her. Why then, do we so often settle for dinner and a movie as our date of choice for the occasion, when we can do that any other day of the year? Why not celebrate with something more adventurous, or at least more memorable? In case you’re at a loss, consider using one of these 12 Valentine’s Day date ideas to express your feelings this year.

1. Plan a picnic.
Seriously, when is the last time you laid out a blanket, unpacked food (store bought or homemade- it doesn’t matter), poured some wine and enjoyed dinner in the fresh air? There is something romantic about this simple tradition, devoid of distractions.

2. Listen to live music.
Whether you go to a big concert at an arena or find a local open mic night, this form of entertainment is always memorable and also helps to fill any lulls in conversation.

3. Schedule a couple’s massage.
More likely than not, you’re both in need of some relaxing and deserving of some pampering.

4. Go to a wine or beer tasting.
Whichever you prefer, there are tastings at wineries, breweries and pubs nationwide these days. You don’t necessarily need to plan an extravagant trip to a vineyard. Most bartenders at pubs and wine bars are more than happy to educate you on the finer points of these beverages, as long as it isn’t during their busy times.

5. Try sky diving.
Talk about a rush! If you’re thrill seekers, this spells romance.

6. Go on a hot air balloon ride.
Plan an unforgettable date, straight out of a romantic comedy, and check something off your bucket list at the same time. How many people do you know who can say they have gone on a hot air balloon ride? And who better to do it with than the one your love?

7. Take a hike.
Men typically feel closer to their partners while they’re actually doing something, not necessarily when talking about intimate subject matter, like women do. Get out into nature and away from your usual routine. The beauty of this activity is that you can walk through mountains, on shorelines or through a man-made nature trail at an area park.

8. Go kayaking.
If you’re more of a sea-lover, take a scenic tour through a local body of water. Both physically demanding and calming, this is a great activity for beginners and experts alike.

9. Try couple’s yoga.
These classes typically require no previous yoga experience. Participating in the class will strengthen the bond you have with your partner because you have to trust each other for the poses to work. It’s also physical activity that requires touch, perfect for setting a romantic tone!

10. Volunteer together.
Find a cause you both care about and get involved together. Even if just for a couple of hours, seeing your partner doing something generous and nurturing for others can be a big turn-on! Even if you choose to get down and dirty cleaning up litter or building a house with Habitat for Humanity, you’ll walk away from the experience with a renewed sense of admiration for your significant other.

11. Plan a couples’ “passion party.”
This is not as awkward as you might think! Find a consultant who hosts these educational, adult product parties and have her handle the invitations. Get a few couples to commit, promising food, drinks, freebies and a few good laughs! By the end of the night, you’ll be more educated than before, and have a few new surprises to use in the bedroom.

12. Go to a comedy club.
Buy tickets to see a big-name coming to town, or support your community’s local improve troupe. Whichever way you go, you’re sure to get in a few laughs.
