Ways to Make Chores Fun

The past few days we learned how to introduce chores to your kids. Next we dealt with how to get your kids to do chores once you've introduced that chore. We all know that once we've gotten them to do it that it can still be a struggle, namely because chores are not innately fun. That’s why people tend to dread doing all of their housework. I’m sure your children will definitely agree with this! Although chores aren’t fun naturally enjoyable for kids to do, you can do a little work to help make them more fun. Here are some ways you can make chores fun for your kids.

Play Some Music

The next time you and your kids are ready to do some chores, turn on some music and play your favorite songs loud enough for everyone to hear. Not only will the music help give you and your kids something to focus on while doing those boring chores, it will also help make the chores more fun when someone spontaneously starts dancing with the broom.

Be Silly

Don’t be afraid to act silly while doing chores. Most chores don’t require a lot of thinking, which means that it will be very easy to get a little silly with your kids. While folding laundry with your kids, try telling a story together, which each member of the family taking turns telling the next sentence of the story. If you’re matching socks, turn some of those socks into puppets and have the puppets search for pairs. Acting silly will definitely make chores more fun.

Slip and Slide Around the House

Do your floors need to be cleaned? Make this chore more fun for your kids by slipping and sliding around the house! Have your kids put on a pair of socks and skate around with the broom, trying to find all of those dust bunnies. Your kids will have a blast and your floors will look great.

Make It a Race

If your kids are competitive, then you can make chores more fun by turning it in to a race. Gather all of your kids together in the living room or kitchen and tell your kids what their chores are. Let them know that the first one done is the winner and will get a celebratory bowl of ice-cream. After yelling go, watch your kids zip around trying to get their chores done in record time.

Doing chores doesn’t have to be boring. By being a little silly and using your imagination, you can make chores fun for your kids to do.

  1. I guess I'm lucky I never had chores as a Child!

  2. We do a "ten second tidy" and see who can put the most away in that time and that peson wins.
Usually it's just a small candy but the kids love it.

  3. Adding Music is the best part. It doesn't feel like you are doing an form of work. Slip and Slide is fun as well ... but it has to be monitored

  4. Making chores fun is always important. That way, the kids actually have fun doing them and want to do them in the future.

  5. I sprinkle the carpet with baby powder or baking soda and let the kids vacuum until it's all gone. They get a kick out of that.

  6. We often plan things to do when chores are finished. A trip to a fun place.

  7. My son LOVES to dust, he pretends it is a pirate sword and the dust is the bad guy. Works like a charm!

  8. These are definitely good things to think about when starting chores. Being silly is my favorite way!

  9. These are all great tips! I really need to start getting my daughter into the routine of doing chores so I will have to try a few of your suggestions!

  10. Wow... wish I had thought of these. We have competitions some times, but the kids still hate chores

  11. I get competitive with my little man to try and get him in the cleaning mode. It does work most of the time. :) I like the idea of turning on the tunes too!

  12. My son hates chores, these tips might just work. Great tips!

  14. This is just as hard for older kids as younger ones. When I have the kids doing chores, I make sure I am doing some kind of chore related activity as well. That way they don't feel like they are the only one or like they are being punished. I also make it a point to thank them for their help regardless how little or big of a task it is.

  15. We used to do the ten second tidy from the Big Comfy Couch with the girls and they loved it.

  16. Great tips. Kids need to do chores but making it fun is really important too!

  17. My mom used to make it a game. Every once in a while she would hide change around on the bookshelves and ask me to dust. I would be so excited to fine money while I was dusting. It wasn't till years later that I found out she hid it there to get me to do the chores. Lol.
