Education means a lot in our household. One of the things that mommy has instilled in us and something that she says over and over again is: ‘You’re going to get an education whether you want to or not’. My sister is currently a freshman in college and my big brother has just started high school. While my youngest brother is still in elementary school he also is the one with the most challenge ahead of him. As my regular readers know, my youngest brother Mikael is autistic but he’s a whiz when it comes to computers and math, geography not so much. So when Oregon Scientific decided that they were going to send him their newest release of the SmartGlobe Discovery, mommy was ecstatic. Mikael not so much. Why? He isn’t a fan of school and thought that it would mean that he would be doing “work” which he doesn’t like doing. He’s that kid who would say that he doesn’t have homework when he does.

Know what’s funny? He didn’t even have to worry. This turned out to be so much fun that he didn’t want to put it down. Who says you can’t have fun while learning? The SmartGlobe Discovery expands on the award winning SmartGlobe Line and is the first to offer three activity panels with different content about the world. Yes I did say three!

One of the things that makes the SmartGlobe Discovery great is that it is playable right out of the box. Batteries are already included so no need to run out looking for batteries. When they do run out it does use three AA batteries so you may need to keep some in stock. It does save on battery life by automatically shutting off after a few minutes if it’s not being used.

Now each activity panel is different and offer it’s own activity. First up is Touch.

To learn about a country, you use the tip of the SmartPen to touch the any activity of the ‘Touch’ category. You then use the SmartPen to point to a place on the globe. To learn more about a particular country, use the SmartPen to touch a different activity on the activity panel, and touch the country again.

It was fun learning about the population and amazing facts of the country. You’d be amazed at what you can learn.

Next up is Find and Compare.

You are able to compare the population and area of two countries on the globe and Mikael had a lot of fun comparing the States.

Find is a really fun game. There are 3 activities for this. You have to find continents, countries, capitals and there is also an ultimate challenge that you can do. The SmartGlobe will tell you to find certain places on the globe and you must find them as quickly as you can. Each activity has different levels and there time levels for each game.

  • Continents – 90 seconds
  • Countries – 120 seconds
  • Capitals – 120 seconds
  • Ultimate Challenge – 120 seconds

Now to advance to a higher level you have to answer a certain number of questions correctly.

  • Level 1 – 1 question
  • Level 2 – 2 questions
  • Level 3 – 3 questions

Now since we are located in the US, there is a local map that shows the states that you can explore. It tells you amazing facts about each state and you can do the activities on the other panels with the local map as well.

There is so much to learn and do with the SmartGlobe Discovery. With 19 exciting activities and games and more than 250 countries to learn about, the SmartGlobe Discovery provides hours of educational entertainment and shares amazing facts. Your kids can learn about continents and compare countries and populations, areas, and test their knowledge with the Ultimate Challenge activity.

Mikael loves his SmartGlobe Discovery so much now that he doesn’t even realize that he’s learning while having fun. It’s no longer ‘work’ for him, it’s just fun and he’s learning along the way. That’s why it gets his BIG THUMBS UP!

The SmartGlobe Discovery is currently available online for $64.99.
