Munchkin's LATCH: A Breastfeeder's Best Friend

Disclaimer: I received products  for review purposes. No other compensation was received. Though the product was free, opinions are 100% my very own.

I am not ashamed to say it. I am actually quite proud of myself. Not ashamed and quite proud of what you're wondering? Well let me get right to it. I was a breastfed baby and breastfed until I was thirteen months old. One of the things that helped me mommy said was having the right bottle, because I will admit it, I was also bottle fed. While I was breastfed exclusively for the first six weeks of my life, mommy had to return to work which meant that someone had to feed me. The easiest way to do that was by bottle and having the right bottle to transition from breast to bottle and back again really helped. Mommy and I are big advocates of breastfeeding, so when contacted by Munchkin to take a look at their brand new line of bottles called LATCH, without hesitation, mommy said "Let's do this. Let's help another new or not so new mommy, find the right bottle to help with that transition with her new, or not so new, baby".

Mommy and I were sent the 4oz and the 8oz size bottles. LATCH is a brand new bottle designed with an accordion-style nipple which moves, pumps and stretches like the breast.

Upon opening the package the LATCH looks like any other bottle with the standard 4 pieces. The bottle, nipple, ring and cover. Upon closer inspection though you notice that there's something a little extra that's included inside of the bottle. That's an anti-colic valve and I'll explain that a little with a description and a video of how it works. Moms know that having a baby who has colic (luckily I never had colic) can be a nightmare, so that valve will definitely be a lifesaver for many.

That anti colic valve is totally removable to make for easy cleaning. Lets face it! You want a bottle that not only cleans easy but will be hygienic as well.  But what about leakage? So obviously mommy and I put this bottle to the test. We filled it with water and shook and shook and shook. No water came out except for the little drips that would come out from the size 1 nipple. You certainly want that slow drip when feeding a newborn. You don't want to go too fast so that he/she will choke.

Now the three key features which the LATCH boasts which aid in the transition from breast to bottle and back are:

  • Stretches for a Better Latch: Accordion-style nipple designed to stretch like the breast all the way to a baby's soft palette, affording an easier latch. Experts agree that a better latch eases the transition between breast and bottle, and back.

See how the LATCH Nipple Stretches:

  • Pumps Like the Breast: Pressure applied on the nipples emulates flow rate like that of mother's breast and increased pressure impacts milk flow. The accordion nipple pumps back and forth as the baby applies pressure, releasing the milk as the baby sucks. This is the same pumping motion as on the breast.
See how the LATCH Nipple Pumps:

  • Anti-Colic: A one-way anti-colic valve is located at the bottom of the bottle allowing for milk to flow out and for and air to displace the milk. Because of the accordion base, the LATCH nipple easily moves with the motion of a newborn baby which can be frequent as baby gains head control. This allows baby to maintain his latch and reduce ingestion of air into his belly.

See how the LATCH Valve Prevents Colic:

I have to give props where they are due and say that these LATCH bottles have been one of the best that I have seen in quite a long time. We love the easy to clean feature, the accordion style nipples but that anti-colic valve was what won us over. These bottles definitely get my TWO TINY THUMBS UP!

The Munchkin LATCH bottles are currently available in both the 4oz and 8oz sizes and can be purchased online at Amazon.com.

  2. We had a lot of trouble finding the right bottle for our boys. My milk came in strong, so they were too lazy to get milk out of most of them. These bottles look great.

    1. Apparently I didn't have that problem and tolerated my bottle. Mommy tried Avent at first then found Comotomo's which I used until I transitioned to the sippy cup. These would have been great if they were around then. ♥ Madison

  6. I don't have any kids but I just recently had a new niece and my sister-in-law has been trying to find the perfect bottle. My niece refuses to take a bottle so she is permanently at the breast or at least that's how it seems. I'm going to have to tell her about these. Thank you Madison and Mommy.

    1. They really have evolved. I have only heard that colic can be very difficult but mommy has never experienced it with me or my brothers and sister. I guess we were all good babies. This will surely help those babies with colic and help to prevent it in those who don't. ♥ Madison

  12. These Munchkin bottles have a nice design! My concern though would be the plastic. Although BPA-free, there's plenty of other ingredients to worry about. That aside, I couldn't agree more about the importance of finding the right bottle. We had to try several before my son decided he liked Lifefactory bottles. Conveniently enough, you can switch out the cap with a sippy cap---so although he's a toddler now he can still use them that way!

    1. The plastic is safe and there really is nothing to worry about. Mommy only went through two bottles with me. We started with Avent which I didn't like for a few days then mommy switched me to Comotomo which is made with silicone and is almost like this one. I loved it and used it until my sippy cup transition. Finding the perfect bottle is a must and these are as close to perfect you will find. ♥ Madison

  20. I wish I would have had these for my babies years ago. I breastfed also and had to go back to work after 6 weeks but continued to pump. My oldest son had the worst colic and it didn't start until I put him on the bottle while I was at work.
