Talk & Soothe Digital Video Monitor by The First Years #Review

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

In December we posted about the FirstYears Talk & Soothe Digital Video Monitor and mentioned that we would have been reviewing it shortly. Well we took a trip to Canada and upon our return found it all boxed up. We have been using it now for the past 3 weeks and I can now give you my honest opinion about it. I must say first that mommy and I are huge fans of The First Years brand. We have quite a few products made by them and all have been spot on. Does this video monitor live up to it's name, read to find out.

This is not by far my first video monitor. I have had a few and while they all have their pros there is always a con. Let me begin by saying that the set up process was very easy. Even if it did not include instructions it would have been very easy to do. It came with everything that was needed and even included a battery pack for the mom or dad hand held monitor.

One thing that mommy loved about the handheld monitor which she uses to keep track of me is that it has a clip that can be attached to her clothing. Mommy is usually in jeans, it seems like she's in them 24/7 when she is not in uniform so mommy really liked that little fact. The battery pack that comes with the handheld video monitor is rechargeable and can really hold a charge. Mommy charged it for a few hours before using it and we can tell you that it held the charge pretty well. There is a battery level indicator on the video monitor so you will always know when it's time to be charged.  Quite a few things can be done from the handheld monitor itself. Mommy can talk to me while I'm in my room and it has worked wonderfully. There was a time that I was trying to climb up on the dresser, once again and mommy was able to see me and shout at me to get down. OK I have to admit that maybe having a video monitor in my room may not be the best thing because mommy can monitor my every move.

For the very young babies there are lullabies that can be activated from the handheld version for those who love them. I think I'm too big for them and would much prefer peace and quiet. The range on the monitor is also pretty good. Mommy was able to go outside in the backyard to try this out and was able to still hear and see me clearly and talk to me as well. From the backyard to my room is approximately 300 feet for those wondering.

The video camera shows a very clear picture and this is where our con comes in as with most video monitors. The night vision is automatic but it's not very clear. Sure you can see but not too well. The way the camera is designed as well it takes a bit of maneuvering for you to get the right angle. Adjusting it has to be done manually, would have been nice if it could have been done from the handheld monitor as well so you won't have to go in the room and disturb your little one. It also can be easily mounted to the wall but mommy decided not to since we plan on moving it around with me being a toddler.

Another of the feature that we loved on the camera itself is the night light function. I'm not a big fan of the dark. I hate the dark so always have to have a nightlight whenever I go to sleep. Having that feature was a big plus for me. It is bright enough for me to see if I decide to get up in the middle of the night and make my way to my parents’ room, but not too bright that it will disturb my sleep.

Now most people think that these video monitors are only great for babies. I'm a toddler and it's perfect for me too. What about your older folks? They are perfect for them as well, especially the ones who are bedridden and need to be checked on. Now you can have your eyes on them at all times.

I have to say that is a great monitor for those parents looking for video monitor and don't want to spend too much money on one. The price is very reasonable at only $99.99 and it is available for sale at your local Target Store.

Now here are the ways to connect with The First Years:

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

  1. I think that might be the issue with most video monitors. The night vision most always suck, as long as you can hear though then I think that's ok. I'm happy that you mentioned it. It's one of the reason why I love reading your blog, you don't sugar coat anything and you're pretty honest with your review although you may still recommend them. Not everything will be perfect and at that price it's still a great monitor. Great photos too but I miss Madison. :)

    1. I agree! Video monitors are usually expensive but this one does come with a very fair price tag. Thank you Amber and I can't wait to read the comments to the rest of my questions. ♥ Madison

  3. As usual a very thorough and honest review! We're still shopping around for a monitor for when Olivia is born in April, Mike's been eager to get the Samsung one that we can sync with our S3 etc.... But who knows, maybe we'll look into this one as well if I can convince him! Will definitely try because think this is a great thing to be able to talk to baby or whomever from the monitor!

    1. Oh yeah, babies love hearing the voices of their parents so having that feature is such a great thing. Maybe you might be able to convince him to get this one. You just never know. ♥ Madison

  4. THis would be great for my Hubs parents. The one we had stopped working so now we don't monitor them and they really need it. I don't think I have seen anything in night vision that is really all that clear.

    1. I have to agree Terry, the night vision on most of these cameras are never really good. You may have to get your in-laws a video monitor soon and this is a great one for them. ♥ Madison

  5. I definitely want a video monitor if we have another baby. I like that this one has a light built in.

  6. Looks like a great monitor and have to say we finally had gotten a better monitor with Lily, but still no where near as good as this one. Definitely looks like such a clear picture, too. Thanks for sharing :)

    1. Oh yeah the picture was pretty clear. It was just the night vision ones that weren't too clear but it did its job. I'm sure you were happy getting a better one for Lily. ♥ Madison

  7. I never owned an actual video monitor until having my last child. I can definitely say I missed out not having one with my other three. This looks like an excellent monitor, which I am sure will be on many mamas baby shower wish lists!

    1. I was born 8 years after my brother and he didn't have a video monitor either but I did. They have come a long way and before you know it they'll have even more advanced features. ♥ Madison

  8. That is an awesome monitor! I can't believe how clear the image looks! I hate how most of those cameras are all blurry. I will have to get one of these!

  10. Great Gramma (almost) has been worrying herself over the fact that her great grand daughter will be on the second floor of the house while my neice and her husbands bedroom is on the first--it is all she has been complaining about (at least to me) since they moved to the new house. Maybe I can convince her to get this for them when the baby is born--I do agree that this monitor would be good for keeping track of others besides babies and toddlers.

  11. Neither of my boys were big fans of the dark, either, so the nightlight would have been awesome with them. With my oldest, I had a "regular" baby monitor, but I did get a video monitor with my second - only it was much bigger & bulkier. I like the sleek look of this one.

  12. Neat! I love this idea! You can only "hear" so much on a monitor, it's nice to be able to SEE, too!

  13. I love that it has a clip to take it anywhere with you! Really helpful to be able to actually get work done while baby sleeps!

  14. I know that night vision is not very good unless its a super expensive camera. I would love to have this for my little ones. They like playing upstairs in their room and I never know what is going on, until I walk up there. This would be perfect for me!

  15. We had a monitor like this, purchased it because the house we have is so large the kids rooms are too far away IMO. It did not work for us because the signal strength was not good enough. Since my husband bought the house after I told him not to due to the size, we moved the baby into our room and my husband got the babies room. It was good for nap time though as it worked from the master bedroom to the family room.

  16. now that is a cool device wish they had this when son was little he could find trouble everywhere this would have made it easier for me to keep up with what he was doing

  17. I do not have children and there is so much that seems to be needed today! Good review and I can see how this would be very useful! Thanks

  18. Looks like an awesome video monitor. I've wanted to get a monitor for both of my kids, but for one reason or another, never have done it.

  19. Sounds like a great thing to have. I'm sorry they didn't have those things when my son was younger. I would love to have been able to monitor him while he was taking a nap.

  20. I have been a big fan of first step products since my kids were young. I could still use one of those monitors sometimes¡

  21. Looks like a great video monitor! We haven't needed one so for, but as my daughter is sleeping in her room now, maybe we should buy one. Thanks for a great review!

  22. Whooaaa - this is just too cool. I have to share this one to my brother - they have been looking for something familiar but just can't get hold of anything like that.

  23. I love the night light feature. I wish I could have had one of this when my kids were little.

  24. That is such an awesome video monitor! I really wish I had one of these when my kids were babies! I could have saved myself so many times of waking up the baby when I just wanted to check on the baby.

    ReplyDelete
  25. That is reasonably priced and I wish they would have had something like this when my kids were younger. It would have come in handy many times. We do have a camera system now for security purposes and sometime I like to check in on my pups. ;)

  26. I wish I had had one of these when my kids were younger. They certainly would have helped

  27. This looks like a good Monitor we have a few different ones here, I also agree these kind of monitors do not have to just be for babies but for older ones too.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I seriously need one of these.. Every day at nap time my son thinks its a good idea to get up and unplug his night light. He flips out if its not plugged in, but if he isn't into sleeping, he'll get up! I'm so afraid he will electrocute himself so I sit outside his room most days until the kid has fallen asleep! ugh! Yep, I need this.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I agree that the nightlight isn't babyish in design so it really could work for any age. I personally prefer sleeping in pitch black darkness, but I know kids aren't really like that!

  30. This looks like a great monitor. I did the traditional monitors with my three children but I have two friends that are pregnant and have video monitors on their wish lists. Thank you for the great review I can use to help make a determination on what to purchase.

  31. Thanks for the great review! We just want to make a note about one of your photos. We love that you show the nightlight, but it is recommended NOT to place a monitor or anything with cords on the crib. Thank you!
