Baby Mattress - What to Look Out For

It's not very often that Mommy and I have a guest blogger on our site. We tend to do most of the work ourselves. Today we have a very special someone who wants to share with you his expertise when it comes to buying a mattress for your baby. Mommy and I realize that this is a very important and getting the right mattress can make a difference. So without further ado lets introduce you to Chris.

Baby Mattress - What to Look Out For

Cot mattress! It is one of the most basic things you will need for your baby to sleep. New born babies sleep nearly 18 hours per day, so choosing the right cot mattress for your little one is quiet essential. Always a baby wants a secured, comfortable and relaxing place to sleep. However, choosing the best quality mattress is a tricky task as they come in variety of shapes and sizes.

Nowadays, people understand the importance of purchasing new and quality baby products, and are specially keeping aside a budget for their baby. New parents are very curious about purchasing cribs as they play vital role in the child’s healthy development and safety. Before choosing for a crib mattress, it is better to consider the following points:

Essential things to consider:

Foam or inner spring mattress – There are many types of options available in the market today. If you consider foam option, it tends to be less expensive and you should also make sure that the foam is firm and dense. If innerspring mattress is your option, it tends to be somewhat expensive, but offers higher durability.

Opt for the thick cover – First of all, check whether the mattress you are going to buy is certified or not. This ensures that it has met the high standards and is safe for use. One of the best mattress options is the one that has multiple layers of laminate coating that’s been strengthened with nylon. These choices have added the benefit of increased durability which means there are less chances of wear and tear.

Perfect fit – The most essential factor is that mattress should perfectly fit in to the cot. The main concern is your child’s safety. It is always better to opt for the new one than the old. How well the mattress fits is an important point to be considered, as a mattress that’s too small leaves gaps which the baby could easily slip into. Even if it is too large, it will not lie flat and could be uncomfortable for your baby. So choosing the right mattress that fits well is crucial for the protection of your little ones.

Other key points to remember while shopping
Go for the cot that has open sides, which offers free circulation of air in order to prevent suffocation and sweating of the baby.

Remember that the cot mattress should not be thicker than 10cm.

It is recommended to avoid second hand ones as the history is not known.

Pick the cots with the adjustable base height which enables you to get your baby in and out easily.

Make sure that the distance between crib slats should not exceed 6 centimeters.

Go for a cot which is having a teething rail that allows a protective plastic coating around the edges, to avoid your baby chewing on the wooden slats of the cot.

Now, it’s time to shop for the baby safety products. It is highly advised to start shopping in advance so that you can plan accordingly about what to buy, and get all the safety products on time. Purchasing online baby products is far easier, and less tiring for you.

  6. I don't have guests often either, so I knew yours would be great!! I may need this one day..if a third child comes into play. I think Des will be out of his crib a lot sooner than Scarlet. She lasted in there until three!

  7. Great idea to have guest bloggers on your blog Madi, I look forward to doing reviews etc with you especially when Olivia gets her in April and I have so many things to use and review. We just received a crib for Olivia Renee from one of my friends and it is a second hand crib, great condition just a few teeth marks! Have to get a mattress for it and one of the major things with crib mattresses is the fit, gaps where baby can get lodged between or under the mattress and crib being the major concern for suffocation. Have our eyes on the Safety First Heavenly Dreams Mattress and the demensions seem best for our crib and the reviews etc I've read are most appealing to us. Thanks again Madi and mom!

  15. Your sleep depends on the mattress you are sleeping on. When you select your ideal mattress, you will need to get up on the mattress sin the store and lay on it. Is it too soft? Too hard? Buying a new sleep system can be a big investment with many advantages, so you should be alert and pay attention. Do not forget that there are a number of features in a bed mattress that you may want to consider. find out more
