Graco Nautilus™ 3-in-1 Car Seat with Safety Surround™ Protection Review

Disclaimer:  I was given the products in this post for the purpose of a review.
I was not paid in any way to write this review.
All opinions are my own.
September is National Child Passenger Safety Month and we recently partnered with Graco asking you my readers to take the Buckle Up For Safety pledge with Graco. For every pledge Graco will donate $1 to Safe Kids Worldwide until they reach their goal of 10,000 pledges! If you haven't taken the pledge I'm asking that you please do.

Mommy doesn't think that National Child Passenger Safety should only be recognized in one specific month. It should be recognized daily. Mommy does not move her vehicle out of the driveway unless we are all buckled up. No matter how short of a distance we are traveling.

Well Graco really believes in Car Seat Safety just like mommy does and they sent me their Nautilus™ 3-in-1 Car Seat with Safety Surround™ Protection for review. Was I excited? You bet I was. Mommy decided to install this in her 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe. Here's something to take note of. If you have an older vehicle without the seat anchors this can take a while to install it properly. Daddy took a REALLY long time getting it installed the correct way. It was included in the middle of the back seat which uses the lap belt.

Now a bit about the installation which wasn't fun. Using the lap belt was a doozy. Well that's what mommy said. My former car seat had a seat belt clip that snapped the lap belt into place when threaded through the seat keeping it stable. This one doesn't have that. So you have to constantly check to make sure that it is tightened and stays tightened. We do have latch anchors in the trunk but not in the seat so daddy had to anchor it to the back keeping it secure.

The Nautilus™ 3-in-1 Car Seat with Safety Surround™ Protection is a forward facing car seat with 5 point safety harness. It is highly encourage to use the included safety harness. Now there's a reason this is a 3-in-1 Car Seat. It is forward facing for your child from 20-65 lbs but then converts to a belt positioning booster when your child is 30-100 lbs. When your child is ready it can then covert to a backless booster from 40-100 lbs.

Now this is very comfy. It is really padded and mommy and I loved that it was. The seat is also reclinable which works out great for me as well. The 5 point safety harness also easily adjusts, there is no rethreading which mommy hates. Seems like Graco thought of everything. I love the padded shoulders that can be easily removed if I didn't like them. The seat cover can also be taken off and machine washed so I won't be sitting on a dirty seat if I spill any of my food.

The head rest is fully adjustable and can be done very easily. You won't have to struggle getting it done.. and that's where the safety surround performance comes in. My head is securely nestled in the headrest and since it's adjustable it grows along with me. The Graco Nautilus™ 3-in-1 Car Seat with Safety Surround™ Protection has been rigorously crash tested to meet and exceed US standards which made both mommy and me feel so much better, especially since it has energy absorbing foam. It has also been side impacted tested as well. The seat also has a steel reinforced frame. Nothing stronger in my opinion.

Now this also features arm rests and a cupholder. The sides also are hollow and I can fit little items in there, I call it my cubby holder. The armrest is contoured and padded so it is very comfortable. I now have my very own armrest but this also takes up a bit more space in the car as well.

Now I love my Graco Nautilus™ 3-in-1 Car Seat with Safety Surround™ Protection but the installation wasn't easy to do but may be in a newer vehicle. As mentioned before my former car seat included a safety snap that kept the car seat belt tightened and I wish Graco would include this in their next seats. I really hope they listen to me. This also takes up quite a bit of space with the arm rests. In a bigger vehicle that would be no problem but when you're a big family you need all the space you can get. Three of these will not fit comfortably in the back of a smaller vehicle.

Besides those cons this is a very great car seat and I recommend it. I've already ridden in my new seat quite a few times and I love facing out to the world. Now I no longer stare at the back of the seat. Yay me!

Now here is an official Graco video showing all the great features:

You can buy your own Graco Nautilus™ 3-in-1 Car Seat with Safety Surround™ Protection at your local Target store.

  1. Great details in your review! The seat looks super comfy, but it is good to know about the things that need improvement, too!

  5. The head part of this car seat looks really protective. I don't see this fitting in our car with two booster seats. I can't wait to get a mini van with a third row.

  6. That car seat is on point! I can't stress how important it is to not skimp on safety and functionality. We have an older Graco seat (2006) and it has outlasted all other seats we have purchased. In fact, the other seat we purchased back in the day was replaced by a Graco seat to accommodate our needs. Fantastic review and I'm so glad they are always improving on quality AND functionality.

    1. Awww the only issue we had was really trying to install it in an older vehicle. If you do have a newer vehicle then this would be a quick easy install. If mommy had installed this in her minivan then this would have been perfect. Also if you have a small vehicle you may want to pass on it as well if you have to install 2 of them in your car. Not much room left for anything. ♥ Madison

  8. This is a very good review, and that is a massive seat!
If you are using a belt that is only the lap belt and find that it is slipping, try this.Thread the belt through loosely, clip it, put your full weight into the seat (I used to literally get into the seat with my knee and all my weight), and have someone else pull it as tight as they can get it. This might help. If this doesn't work, you may have to use a locking clip.
Seats that aren't rear/forward facing convertible don't have level indicators. Those are for rear facing as they must be between 35 and 40 degrees reclined.
Does the seat have a LATCH system and do your seats have LATCH anchors? They are a great alternative to seat belts, but should never both be used at the same time.
I used to be a certified car seat installer when I worked for a county health department. There are often car seat clinics where you can take your car and seat to to make sure they are installed properly. These are usually free. Check your local hospital or health department if you're interested. :)

    1. Thank you for those awesome tips! Daddy had mommy get into the seat and did what you did as well. Its the best way to make sure that it's in really tightly. The car itself doesn't have the latch anchors in the seat but in the back where the trunk is so mommy had to latch it back there. Worked out great in the end. ♥ Madison

  18. proper installation is definitely an issue. I did the CPST training back a while ago (okay a decade ago!) and definitely things have changed but it was eye opening then (before kids)

    ReplyDelete

    1. It really is. Unless you have your car seat properly installed you can consider yourself riding around without one. Mommy and daddy always make sure mine has no slack in it whenever it's installed. It should not move from side to side etc. Not sure how much has changed since a decade ago but no matter what proper installation is still a top priority. ♥ Madison

  19. Some car seats are seriously bulky. The bulk is fine if you're driving an SUV or a truck. But for those in the smaller cars it's difficult. I know a few people that traded their vehicles in just so they'd have room for the car seats!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes most of these seats are really big and do take up a lot of room. Mommy wishes that they would make them a little slimmer to fit more of them in the back. ♥ Madison

  20. A great review, and proper secure installation is key!
Recently our local police ran a voluntarily car seat check service, and they said 25% of car seats were fitted incorrectly, eek!

  34. Safety is of utmost priority. People should always put that in mind and buy stuff that are necessary for safety. It is always a good investment when it comes to health and safety. This is a good thing too because the company is donating the pledges to charity. It is done so to increase awareness about the dangers that may happen on the road.

It is comfortable, has good protecting at all sides, easy to mount and to adapt for the child so I am absolutely happy using it.
